About this deal

Laurie also made suggestions to the band about their contributions, for example, that Dave should dust off his Hammond for certain songs. Dave recalls: ‘I don’t remember it being his suggestion but I’ve always enjoyed playing the Hammond! It is one of my favourite keyboards’. JJ’s basswas dropped down in the mix, assuming a more conventional position in the sound which the bassist agreed to: ‘I was quite happy to do that at the time, althoughI laterstarted to realise that actually my bass was an integral part of the Stranglers’ sound and without it we were less distinctive’. The touring party headed across Europe for a huge tourto support the album and the response was particularly encouraging in territories like France & Germany where they continued to build on the success of Feline. However, the signs of some tensions between Hugh and JJ started to show during the Euro gigs, JJ explains: ‘We were starting to get a bit confrontational with each other. We’d always been competitive which had been helpful to the band but, when things become antagonistic or confrontational, then something’s going to break at some point’. An upbeat number and the shortest song on Aural Sculpture. One can mistake the lyrics are about horse racing but the former is an analogy for the effects of taking cocaine. In 1984 Hugh was taking a lot of speed type drugs along with heroin. The reference to saddling up and racing into town is Hugh's way of describing the feeling cocaine has on his being. In addition, occasionally I will post material by other bands, related or otherwise, that mean a lot to me. Kelly, Ian. In July 2018, the band played at the LUNAR festival in Tanworth-in-Arden. Touring is exhausting. You have to keep in good shape. It’s all down to respect for the people who’ve paid good money to see us. How many bands are still going strong after 50 years and can sell out the Royal Albert Hall in seconds? I used to be a punk and, as an angry young man, I was very anti-authoritarian and always getting into punch-ups. But this tour won’t be Last Night of the Punks. These days I’m much more disciplined. And I’m not ready to retire yet! The cassette version of the album had a ZX Spectrum computer program called Aural Quest at the end of the tape, which could be loaded using the Spectrum's usual tape loading method. The program was an adventure game written using a framework called The Quill. Preceding the program was a short explanation of the following squeal, which was voiced by keyboardist Dave Greenfield. About a journeyman telling his story, a continuation of stark and depressing lyrics about, at least in the first verse, the various horrors of war. When war is finally over the people cannot settle when the new regime is governing peoples lives. Painting pictures of individual horrors " i saw a youth that was on fire" continuing with the disintegration of two generations of family in genocidal nightmare. At the end the journeyman reflects that all he wants to do is to listen to the waves to offset his thoughts from the final Armageddon that is upon his world. In February 1978 the Stranglers began a mini-tour, playing three secret pub gigs as a thank-you to those venues and their landlords for their support during the band's rise to success. The first was at The Duke of Lancaster in New Barnet on Valentine's Day, [28] with further performances at The Red Cow, Hammersmith, and The Nashville Rooms, West Kensington, in early September. As a collector of their live recordings for many years I want to share some of the better quality material with other fans. By selecting the higher quality recordings I hope to present The Stranglers in the best possible light for the benefit of those less familiar with their material than the hardcore fan.

A typical melodic opening that the Stranglers are famous for with organ sounding very much like one would hear in a Church . In promoting Spain in every way, the albums lyrics are becoming more positive. There is an interesting interlude with a Spanish woman speaking Spanish about Spain at a guess. In parts of the song the band shout "Spain" in old football style chant always in the presence is Dave Greenfields organ throughout the song. I know Hugh likes Morrocco maybe there are places familiar in Spain that remind him of Morrocco and hence the more positive lyrics. These gigs will be more than three hours long, and mainly in seated venues, with an interval… or rather a comfort break – a lot of our fans have been with us since 1974. All the playing and travelling is gruelling and it’s so easy to let yourself go. So as well as making time for exercise, I insist on eating healthily: mostly protein and greens. I always eat breakfast – usually eggs, sometimes with bacon and brown sauce, but no bread and always fresh coffee. I’ll have a salad for lunch and in the evenings, at home, I like to cook fish, lobster, meat and veg. I’m partial to truffle oil and a dollop of crème fraîche. On tour we have a couple of cooks with us. If I do have to grab any junk food I’m filled with self-loathing!a b "The Bizarre and Brilliant Video Game World of Goichi Suda". Eight And A Half Bit. The remaining members recruited John Ellis, who had had a long-standing association with the band. He had opened for them in the 1970s as a member of The Vibrators, filled in for Cornwell during his time in prison for drug possession in 1980, worked with Burnel and Greenfield in their side-project Purple Helmets, and been added to the Stranglers' line-up as a touring guitarist a short time before Cornwell's departure. Burnel and Ellis briefly took over vocal duties (for one television appearance on The Word) before enlisting Paul Roberts, who sang on most songs live, even those originally sung by Burnel. The Stranglers have never been seen as soppy, because we’ve never written love songs. But on our last album, Dark Matters, in 2021, two songs are about love. One [And if You Should See Dave…] for my friend of 45 years, Dave Greenfield, who we lost to Covid. Plus The Lines is about still being able to love yourself when you look in the mirror and have to face up to ageing. Today, we’re celebrating this wildly influential band by ranking their ten classic lineup albums released before Cornwell’s departure in 1990. After a prolific beginning rooted in the punk years, The Stranglers evolved through several stylistic overhauls, ultimately losing touch with the identity that once set them apart from the madding crowd. The Stranglers’ classic lineup albums ranked: 10. 10 Cornwell, Hugh; Drury, Jim (2001). The Stranglers: Song by Song. Sanctuary Publishing Ltd. ISBN 1-86074-362-5.
