About this deal

It not only details the life of the Watchmaker’s daughter but also includes many details about her relatives and the people who were involved in her life and the underground Resistance in the Netherlands. The Hiding Place is an unforgettable book, the story of quiet, determined, and faith-based heroism by an otherwise unassuming middle-aged Dutch woman. Larry Loftis’s new release, The Watchmaker’s Daughter, greatly expands her story and is the first major biography of Corrie ten Boom.”— Jewish Journal An inspiring World War II story of courage and daring. ... Loftis deftly interweaves ten Boom’s compelling tale with of two young women living just miles away—Anne Frank and Audrey Hepburn—to drive home the peril, grief, and spirit of resistance that surged through the occupied Netherlands. A well-researched, vivid, inspiring book that reminds us both of the power of resistance, and of the capacity of good people to stand up against evil in history’s darkest hours.”— Kristin Harmel, New York Times bestselling author of The Forest of Vanishing Stars

I guess I'm just used to listening to and reading Holocaust memoirs, where everything is more personal and first person, causing the listener/reader to really feel what the narrator went through, because this book, while interesting, fell flat on occasion. For many of us, the story of Holland during World War IIis embodied in Anne Frank, the Jewish girl who documented in her diary the two years she and her family spent hiding in a secret annex in Amsterdam to avoid Nazi persecution. When Anne was 15, the family was discovered and Anne was sent to her death at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. But her diary, with its poignant reflections of an adolescent facing personal and existential challenges, survived and was published to instant acclaim. Corrie was eventually released and, even though she loss most of her family, her faith allowed her to forgive and to move on, providing witness about the Holocaust, and ministered to people in need. Corrie set up rehabilitation centers to support survivors along with others whose lives were effected by the occupation. She was honored as one of the "Righteous Among the Nations" by the Yad Vashem Authority in 1967.

Astounding ... An intimate, detailed portrait ... The extraordinary bravery of Corrie Ten Boom is eclipsed only by her ability to find faith and hope in utter darkness. Perfect for readers of biography and history." - Booklist The deserved success of Anne’s diary often overshadows other accounts of Dutch bravery during the Nazi occupation. One woman who saved lives and gave hope to hundreds of Dutch anti-Nazis, then demonstrated extraordinary compassion toward Nazi collaborators after the war, was Corrie ten Boom, a modest single woman in her late 40s when the Ninth Panzer Division marched into Holland in May 1940. Now Larry Loftis, a former corporate attorney who has written three World War II nonfiction spy thrillers, shines a spotlight on ten Boom with “The Watchmaker’s Daughter.”

New York Times bestselling author and master of nonfiction spy thrillers Larry Loftis writes the first major biography of Corrie ten Boom, a Dutch watchmaker who saved the lives of hundreds of Jews during WWII—at the cost of losing her family and being sent to a concentration camp, only to survive, forgive her captors, and live the rest of her life as a Christian missionary. I really liked the added details and information that the author made available in this wonderful book. He did an excellent job. However, he had an amazing Lady to write about. Look at me, venturing into the nonfiction genre! For the most part, I review fiction for Life is Story. Every so often, though, I come across a nonfiction book that piques my interest, and The Watchmaker’s Daughter by Larry Loftis pulled me in from the moment I saw its subject: Corrie ten Boom. Growing up in a Christian home and attending a Christian school, I grew up hearing her incredible story. Fellow drama students used excerpts of The Hiding Place for district and state competitions. Corrie ten Boom spoke at my grandmother’s church before I was born. I knew of her heroism during World War II, but I wanted more—and my goodness, did Larry Loftis deliver! The first time I read it I was unfamiliar with the Holocaust. I remember being disturbed by Corrie and her sister sleeping on straw that was full of fleas! Obviously, this was the least of the horrors they would go through! Like a skilled archaeologist, Larry unearths little-known fragments of Corrie Ten Boom’s story. By mining everything from historical records to family mementos, he’s exposed fresh facets of Corrie’s remarkable ministry. If you loved The Hiding Place, read this book!" — Jim Daly, President, Focus on the FamilyCorrie stopped at nothing to face down the evils of her time and overcame unbelievable obstacles and odds. She persevered despite the loss of most of her family and relied on her faith to survive the horrors of a notorious concentration camp. But even more remarkable than her heroism and survival was Corrie’s attitude when she was released. Miraculously, she was able to eschew bitterness and embrace forgiveness as she ministered to people in need around the globe. Corrie’s ability to forgive is just one of the myriad lessons that her life story holds for readers today. Also, the one prison supervisor who helped her and her family and who was Saved and became a Christian met with Corrie after the war and he had mentioned to her that he had been in prison himself, but didn't say what for and why he was let out. Was he found out to be helping Jews and he was imprisoned by the Nazis? Was he imprisoned after the war for war crimes by the Allies? No explanation.
