Wisley has since been extended (originally ‘c 7.5ha of garden ground and water, c 7.5ha of grassland, and c 9ha of arable’, it is now 97ha, or 240 acres), and developed ‘for the benefit of its members and visitors’. A key structure at Wisley is the old Laboratory building ( Grade II), built in 1914-16 in ‘Surrey Vernacular style’ to accommodate a lecture theatre for the School of Horticulture (founded in 1907). It later housed the RHS’s administrative and scientific departments, but, more recently, has been opened to the public, with the move of the science functions to ‘ RHS Hilltop’ (still at Wisley), ‘the UK’s first dedicated horticultural scientific centre of excellence’.

About RHS garden centres.

Throughout it all we’ve held true to our charitable core – to encourage and improve the science, art and practice of horticulture – to share the love of gardening and the positive benefits it brings.
