About this deal

Adjustable level and crossover switches let you get the perfect sound match for your speakers and room. Phase is fully adjustable, meaning that wherever the subwoofer is placed in your room – in front, to the side or behind you – the bass is fully in sync with the rest of the music.

Far slimmer than most subwoofers, the ProfileSub simply fits where others don’t. A depth of just 180mm makes this subwoofer ideal for placing underneath furniture, in tight spaces or even on the wall. For the best fit, you can hang it in horizontal or vertical orientations. The design is fairly basic, with a simple matte finish, but given MK speakers and subwoofers are regularly used on mixing stages around the world, that’s not surprising. This is a no-nonsense THX-certified subwoofer that’s the choice of the professionals, making the X12+ perfect for any self-respecting movie fan. Here at What Hi-Fi?we review hundreds of products every year, from TVs to speakers, headphones to hi-fi systems. So how do we come to our review verdicts? And why can you trust them? Allow us to explain. This may sound crazy, but you can use more than one subwoofer. This doesn’t mean that the bass will be louder or overwhelming, it actually results in a more balanced and smoother performance. In fact, a number of AV receivers and amplifiers offer multiple sub outputs. Some subwoofers come with remote controls, which can be useful for adjusting the volume level while sitting in your primary listening position. A remote may also allow the settings to be tweaked without needing to go over to the subwoofer and fiddle with the controls at the rear. Prices valid in stores (all including VAT) until close of business on 26th November 2023. The superior build quality, attractive design and gorgeous finish provide an immediate feeling of luxury. But it’s not all surface charm, and this discreetly compact subwoofer does an awful lot with its 10in driver, 10in passive radiator and 300W RMS of Class A/B power. As a result, the T/9x delivers a fast and transparent performance that combines with surprisingly high output levels and great low-end impact. It’s an impressive achievement, producing plenty of energy and dynamics while retaining REL’s trademark intimacy, clarity and speed.

The best subwoofers you can buy in 2023

Electrical power is measured in watts (W) and the more wattage available, the louder the sub and the harder you can drive it without distorting, but the higher the price tag. A continuous output of 500W should be more than enough for most people, but if you have the budget you can go higher.

However, despite its speed, there’s not much shape or texture to the sound the Sub Mini produces, leavening it a little one-dimensional, particularly with music, such as Fiona Apple’s Under The Table, where the upright bass is stripped of much of its tonality and, rather than being an equal part of the ensemble, becomes more of a monotone support. This classy model combines a 13in high-excursion driver with powerful Class D amplification to create an uncompromising subwoofer that can generate exceptional amounts of bass with pinpoint control and flawless tonal accuracy. The result is an exciting and muscular performer that often feels like an iron fist inside a velvet glove. We also try the subwoofer out in various positions around the room in which we’re testing as this has a noticeable impact on sonic performance. Subwoofers are tested using whichever connection methods they support, be they physical or wireless, and we assess how easy the sub is to incorporate into your current home audio system. As you'd expect from Sonos, the Sonos Sub Gen 3 is a breeze to set up. With no wiring or programming required, simply press one button and follow the prompts from the Sonos app. It automatically adjusts the audio settings to ensure that the Sub is fully optimised to work with your paired Sonos components. This reference subwoofer is beautifully made, sports a curved metal mesh grille, and includes the SVS remote app for easy setup, simple control and effective optimisation. The SB-3000 also won’t break the bank, so whether you’re a hardcore audiophile or home cinema fanatic, this superb subwoofer is sure to please. Enjoy genuine hi-fi sound quality but demand discreet style? Then take a look at the ground-breaking Cambridge Audio Minx system! Active Subs: These are self-contained active subs that combine a line-level crossover and power amp. A separate amp and speaker are not necessary. It contains line-level inputs and outputs, as well as a volume control for the subwoofer level. The bass is filtered from the signal sent to the main speakers. Equalisation allows boost or reduction of certain frequencies. SVSound are quite good at these. The Sub (Gen 3) is fairly large, and although Sonos doesn’t mention the size of the drivers, they use a force-cancelling configuration to produce deeper bass. There are also dual acoustic ports for increased low-end extension, and a pair of Class D amplifiers (although once again the actual power rating isn’t given). However, Sonos does claim the Sub (Gen 3) goes down to 25Hz.

Subwoofers come in two flavours: passive and active. A passive sub requires external power from an amp or AV receiver, whereas an active sub has its amplification built in. All the subs in this guide are of the active variety, raising the question of how much power an active subwoofer requires. The Gen3 version of the Sonos Sub features updated internals with increased memory, processing power and enhanced ability to accept future upgrades. When combined with the new Sonos S2 app, the Sub becomes the smartest subwoofer around. The app also gives you access to an adjustable EQ, for sound tailored to your preferences. With REL's legendary build quality and finish, the T/5x has to be one of the most attractive-looking subwoofers in its class. Featuring a deep, 5-layer piano gloss finish and logoed aluminium feet, this is one subwoofer you'll be proud to have on show. Adding a sub can greatly improve a speaker system's range. Separating the bass allows the mid and high range to breathe more without smothering them. This also means that the speaker volume can be comfortably pushed to higher volumes. With a compact speaker setup, the improvement of having a subwoofer can be dramatic. The first one might seem obvious, but you will need to pay some attention to the design. Yes, we all like something modern and sleek, but frequently you need something that fits. The size of the subwoofer is a crucial thing to look for. A smaller unit might not allow you to integrate as many speakers, but it can replace some speakers and give you better sound. Where You Will Use It Fantastic Subwoofer I needed to buy a new subwoofer to replace my aging Mordaunt-Short one which finally stopped working after many years of service. I wasn't completely sure what to replace it with as being part of a surround speaker system I always felt it balanced well with the speakers, I discussed the options with Tony in the store who walked me through the different subwoofers that would match my Mordaunt-Short Alumni speakers. It is important to remember that a poorly engineered sub, or one that has been set up incorrectly, can hamper the audio output of a speaker system. Some subs are designed for the rumble and growl of home cinema systems, but not necessarily for music. Areas of Use With its compact dimensions and smooth, rounded styling, the REL T/5x is one of the most stylish yet least obtrusive subwoofers in its class. Small enough to fit behind and to the side of furniture, the T/5x is ideal for tight spaces and discreet installations. Power it up, however, and the powerful 125 watt amp and 8 inch sub will leave you in no doubt that this is a true REL, through and through. The slim, stylish subwoofer can be displayed on the floor outside the system or insidea cabinet. Force-canceling drivers inside the cabinet face-to-faceallow for a complete, unfettered bass response, so you don't have to worry about cabinet-buzzing, rattling, or any other artifacts to the sound. And just like the rest of the Sonos family, it can be wirelessly connected to the entire system and controlled with the Sonos app.
