It is Mummy’s 39th birthday. Her depiction of Jane in particular feels so realistic and I love the streak of feminism Jane has inherited from Ellen. Having loathed Simon in the previous book I was pleased to see him return slightly differently in Why Mummy’s Sloshed. As Sadie walked off, with her head a little higher and a spring in her step that hadn’t been there before, Mrs Elliott shouted after her "Also, I LOVE your shoes, they're fabulous!" Firstly, I really like the cover of this book, and the predecessors in this series, they're all really pretty and I love how they all match up together, and are busy yet minimalistic all at the same time.
Mummy's kids are now navigating the trials and tribulations of reaching A-level age. She's feeling overwhelmed and under-appreciated… and the only thing that Mummy knows for sure is that the bigger the kids, the bigger the drink. My initial worry was that it would be full of over the top smugness, a mum who harped on about how she effortlessly manages home life, work life and still had time to hang out with her friends. I felt it might net mums inspired - if you know, you know. Sadie sighed. "Bye Mum!" she muttered sarcastically to herself "Thanks Mum! Gosh, Mum, where would we be without you, Mum?"

As with Why Mummy Doesn’t Give A ****, in Why Mummy’s Sloshed there’s a more measured and less frenetic approach that mirrors Ellen’s own increasing maturity, but this time I found a great wisdom underpinning the humour. In fact, Ellen’s assistance of her best friend Hannah, is a brilliant example of how we can all reach out to those under pressure. I think that underneath the humour, Why Mummy’s Sloshed is a surprisingly sensitive insight into the lives of many women and a brilliant example of how appearances may be deceptive. Gill Sims has done it again! I have enjoyed every single one of the 'Why mummy...' series, but I have to say this one is my favourite of the four. In fact, each book has got progressively better and better, which is no mean feat as the first one was pretty good!Finally, after Sadie had attempted to have a shower while answering shouts through the door about "Darling, have you seen my car keys? I really need to leave NOW, and I can’t find them anywhere?" and had logged onto ParentPay while trying to get dressed because Toby was shouting through the door that he had just remembered that today was "like, the LAST DAY, Mum, to sign up for the school trip and you need to pay the deposit, NOW"- this being the very first that Sadie had heard of the trip, and read the riot act to Ella until she grudgingly returned the posh and ludicrously expensive mascara Sadie had treated herself to last week after reading an article about the importance of self-care, which was all very well, but clearly the author of the article did not live with teenagers, or she would know that they are why you cannot have nice things, while Ella whined that it wasn’t fair and she needed it for a make-up video for TikTok, everyone was out the door. When we first meet Ellen (Mummy) she is waiting to take her daughter, Jane to her driving test. Her children Jane and Peter are now older. Jane is studying for her A Levels and hoping to go to university and Peter is studying for his GCSEs. She is now separated from her husband Simon and going through the process of a divorce. Throw in some changes at work and Mummy’s plate is full to bursting. However, she still has time to see Hannah one of her oldest friends and babysit Hannah’s 2 year old son Edward, who gives new meaning to the term ‘the terrible twos’. The book follows Mummy’s life in a year and each chapter represents a month and what happens in her life. This will definitely be an eventful year for Mummy, no wonder she’s partial to a drink.
