About this deal

Based on my experience, I suspect that this Tequila contains additives, which is not surprising as I believe that most, if not all, of Cuervo’s releases, are infused. The 1800 Tequila brand was formed as a subset of Jose Cuervo in 1975. Produced at the same facility and using the same materials as the famous Jose Cuervo tequila, this brand was designed to produce a superior sipping spirit for the higher end market. The 1800 date comes from the first year when oak barrels were first used to age tequila. Product Most Tequilas you see in liquor stores are unaged as they were bottled right after distillation; they are known as Blanco or Silver Tequila. With a spicy body and well-founded finish, this is a premium sipping tequila. Presented in a beautiful bottle inspired by the pyramids of the Mayans, this is a great gift for tequila lovers. The insights I’ve gained aren’t just from books or hearsay; they are the result of hands-on experience, countless tastings, and an enduring passion for these spirits.

Añejo tequila is special in that it spends one to three years aging in oak barrels. In Spanish, the word “añejo” means old, which is a reference to its aging time. Due to its oak aging, Añejo tequilas often show rich flavors of vanilla, cinnamon, and/or sweet spice on the palate. Añejo is carb-free but should be consumed in moderation on aketo diet because it is alcoholic. 1800 Añejo: Specs Type of Tequila I like that I can really see the contents of the bottle, and that it isn’t obscured or masked by a giant label. Especially with something this dark and beautiful (artificial coloring notwithstanding), being able to see the spirit through the glass is something I appreciate. Steve Reynolds, co-founder of Penta Tequila, agrees. “An añejo, for me, needs to have spice, mouthfeel and layers of character [that] you can only get with time and age in a barrel," he says. "There is a balance to the wood and toast for me that makes all things sing.” My journey has seen me as an owner of sophisticated bars and renowned liquor shops, and even as a Mezcal distiller, honing the craft from scratch.

According to the laws that govern Tequila, if you let it age in an oak barrel between 1 and 3 years it becomes an Añejo; beyond that, it becomes an Extra-Añejo which is tequila’s first class. The folks at 1800 have been crafting fine tequila for over 200 years, since – you guessed it – 1800!

Jose Cuervo quite literally set the standard for tequila, and 1800 follows that same process. The spirit starts out with a crop of 100% blue agave plants which are harvested and have their leaves sliced off, leaving the hard core behind. That core is then cooked for about three days in an oven to convert the plant material into sugar, and then placed into large vats to ferment and allow yeast to convert that sugar into alcohol. s Anejo is aged in French Oak for a minimum of 14 months, time for bushels of oaky and spicy flavour to develop in the 100% agave tequila within. Once the fermentation is complete, what remains is a mildly alcoholic liquid that isn’t nearly pure or strong enough to be tequila. The next step in the process is to distill that spirit twice in copper pot stills to concentrate the spirits and raise the alcohol level. It exceeded my expectations as I thought it would be mediocre considering it is part of the 1800 lineup.

If you are interested in Añejo Tequilas without additives, I have put together a list of recommendations for you to explore. Does it freeze? Distillers are not required to disclose the use of additives in Tequila as long as they do not exceed 1% of the total content.

Gran Centenario Añejo and Jose Cuervo Añejo are the natural alternatives as they are crafted at the same distillery; barrel management makes them sufficiently different, though. It is a common practice to store Tequila in the freezer as its alcohol content prevents it from freezing. In 1758, Don José Antonio de Cuervo was granted a plot of land in the (soon to be Mexican) town of Tequila. Here, he would build a farm with his family where they would cultivate the blue agave plant that was native to the area and, in 1795, the family distilled and produced their first bottle of mezcal (side note for those who don’t quite understand the differentiation: scotch is to whiskey as tequila is to mezcal). That’s plenty of time to perfect every aspect of their finely aged Anejo tequila – from when to harvest their Weber blue agave at their peak to selecting the best barrels to rest the tequila.

Añejo Reserva Tequila is made from 100% Weber blue agave and harvested at its peak, between 8 and 12 years. This tequila is aged in French oak barrels for a minimum of 14 months. The finish is described as spicy and well rounded with flavors of toasted oak, vanilla and caramel. This deep and luxurious tequila is ideal for drinking. What does the 1800 vintage label shield mean?

My education and training include a thorough knowledge of agave spirits creation from planting agaves to bottling, including distillation. However, if you are looking for a Tequila to mix, 1800 Blanco is still the best option in the 1800 range. Records the default button state of the corresponding category & the status of CCPA. It works only in coordination with the primary cookie. I really liked the silver version of this spirit in a margarita, and I’ve liked other anejo-based margaritas (for example, El Jimador Anejo). In this case, though… not so much. Unfortunately, it has become common practice in the industry to use additives to standardize the aroma and flavor of Tequilas.Unlike bourbon, rye whiskey, or Scotch, which can benefit from a drop of water, Tequila does not improve with added water. Añejo, like most agave spirits, is low in sugar content, making it a good choice for those who are trying to lose weight.
