About this deal

this book centers on asha, a mere human in a world ruled by fae who regard humans as little more than the trash under their feet, littering their cities and towns. the leader of these assholes? the fae king, kiran, who, after his beloved wife and her secret lover plot to kill him and take his throne, turns his jaded, scorned-man rage into a fervent, too-oft-repeated-belief that all ‘humans lie’. in revenge? he’ll select a human woman to sacrifice once a month…after marrying her. a man plotting to take his bad mood and hurt feelings out on innocent bystanders? what a surprise. I'm not saying this is my favorite book ever or that it's perfect, but I do believe that it's worth the read! The writing style bothers me immensely. It feels juvenile, especially because we are forced to sift through the Asha's every. Last. Thought. And they're the same thoughts over and over again. She loves her sister and is /so/ self sacrificing for saving her. The king is a murderous villain. Az never loved her. Dinah is the bestest, kindest sister. The king burned his wife alive and she hates him. Az would make out with her if she wasn't ugly. Over and over, alongside paragraphs of unnecessary details that add nothing to the story. I felt like I was reading through the eyes of middle- school girl rather than an almost grown adult. I never felt drawn into the story because the writing style was so distracting. I could only read a few minutes at a time before giving up. Structurally, some of the chapter divisions are put in awkward places and messed with the flow of the story. Annoying, but not a deal breaker. apples of gold] Either golden-coloured fruit, such as oranges or quinces ( χρυσόμηλα, Plin.; aurea mala, Virg. Ecl. iii. 71), or fruit gilded or made of gold, as part of the artistic ornament.

This book was about Piper a half fae who steals neglected human children to have them join a resistance against the fae. Seems good right? Not exactly... I didn’t love the story within the story, but I understand that it was necessary, and helpful for the context of the plot. But for the longest time it felt like filler, therefore annoyed me more than anything… even after it was revealed to be important to the plot. The 🌶️ factor is definitely a 0 in this book. I would put this in the category of YA rather than NA. But aside from that it’s a unique storyline with strong main and supporting characters. Amity pretty much saves the day. Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it. is a weekly podcast on biblical issues by Amy Spreeman and Michelle Lesley. As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, so is a faithful messenger to them that send him: for he refresheth the soul of his masters. The magic system is interesting, but not everything has been revealed. So the first portion of magic revealed is about this sentient story weaving magic that bonded to a human. The idea of it being aware and able to hold conversations and be a witness to a being’s life, even the private parts is….. uncomfortable. once you’ve come to terms with that, you can enjoy this for what it is: a beautiful, interesting, and complex retelling of 1001 nights. As for the characters, Asha was a fine heroine. She was self sacrificing while working through pride, which was very interesting. I enjoyed seeing her work through the different prejudices she had against Kierian.

The ancient sages highly revered elegant and concise language. In Proverbs 25:11–14, Solomon presented a series of symbolic statements concerning speech with succinct sophistication. He began by saying, “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver” (Proverbs 25:11, ESV). With this maxim, Solomon stressed the importance of good counsel. Piper is a half Fae with magical powers to find children that suffer from abuse and neglect, and then leads them to her handler who is busy creating an army to overthrow the King. Marcus is the neither of one of those children - her first mission that Piper believes had died due to her own incapabilities and immaturity. It is a slow build and I personally like the overall story line between asha and Kiran, and of course asha magic story mother and Farin. the dude has issues. so many so that even i, with my chronic color blindness specifically for red flags, could see how problematic it is to root for this guy. and yet. and yet. you know where this is going, right? i simped. unapologetically so. and before you judge me too harshly — READ THIS BOOK. you’ll understand.

This romance was far more believable and natural. Marcus was a fine hero, vulnerable, grouchy. But I didn’t understand his cloak? Where did it come from? What did it do? How did it work?! Marcus and Piper are two tortured souls. Consumed with guilt, tortured by the pasts. They are alone on the world. They are both harboring secrets, neither are what they claim to be. Their paths verge, then diverge — all the while not knowing it crossed and bonded them long before they realize. They are brought together, then torn apart. A man has joy in giving an appropriate answer, And how good and delightful is a word spoken at the right moment—how good it is! At the end of each podcast we sign off by encouraging you to “walk worthy.” This little nugget comes from Ephesians 4:1-3:

Keil and Delitzsch Biblical Commentary on the Old TestamentThe first emblematical distich of this collection now follows: Seeing the typical Fae issue of not being able to lie worked around and through was fun. Kierian was a tough cookie to figure out. You didn’t know if you could trust him or not. It was fun! Asha isn’t worried about being chosen, of course. The decree was quite clear about beauty being among the top criteria for being selected as one of the king’s unfortunate brides. And Asha is no beauty, all thanks to the illegal magic that inhabits her body, leaving her scarred and missing an eye. The same magic that occasionally possesses her voice so it can amuse itself by telling a never-ending story with a string of horrible cliffhangers. The apostle Paul taught that fitly spoken words—words that fit the occasion—build up those who hear them: “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear” (Ephesians 4:29, ESV). We can either tear people down with our words or let our conversation become a channel of grace and life as Jesus Christ did: “Everyone spoke well of him [Jesus] and was amazed by the gracious words that came from his lips” (Luke 4:22, NLT).

As he that taketh away a garment in cold weather, and as vinegar upon nitre, so is he that singeth songs to an heavy heart. This book was going to be rated by me around the 3.5 star mark, until I reached the ending. I thought for sure it was a stand-alone, and never saw the connection that was revealed at the end coming. Like how she only takes the children who need taking—the children who suffer harm and neglect in their current homes, the ones who come with her willingly. The second book in the series gives us Piper’s story. We meet her toward the end of AWSFS and she is gifted like Asha. Piper, being half-fae and gifted, is abandoned by her family and left to die. When Bronger finds her, he raises her, then begins to manipulate her and her gift, to build an army of stolen children, an army to take down the fae king. She feels she is saving these children from a life of harm and hunger. But in reality they are taken from one dangerous situation to another. Other translators associate the original Hebrew term with a word that means “wheel,” thus rendering the modifier as “well-turned” or “well-spoken” as in “artfully expressed.” The NET Bible concurs: “Like apples of gold in settings of silver, so is a word skillfully spoken.” This book gripped me from the very first chapter. The prose is exceptional 🤌 and was my favorite part about this book.
