About this deal

The actual print process lasted only around 90 seconds, which seems more than acceptable given that not every print is likely to be at this scale.

We need to say that while the strength of colour in dyes is superior to pigments, they are conversely less durable, and you might not want to use them to create images for archiving or long-term display. You can also use the phone control panel app for setting some aspects of the printer. Media handling The other weaknesses of this offering are a missing Ethernet port, and the grey ink reservoir that the ET-8500 and ET-8550 both got. Maybe Epson has a seven or eight-tank variant planned that would be ideal for B&W photos in addition to colour. If you’ve images with fine detail printed at high resolution it’s worth doing a few test prints to see if it makes a visible difference to your prints. Custom sizesIf, however, you’re using the Epson ET-8550 as intended – to print a lot of large A3 photos and other content – you’ll soon break even. And, once you’ve started saving money, you’ll not regret choosing the Epson over the Canon, notwithstanding the slightly inferior print quality. There is a lot of ‘value engineering’ gone into this model printer – it seems very much aimed at a market which ‘just wants colour photo prints’– no fripperies, just good solid colour prints on photo papers. The Epson Photo+ software is really easy to use. I created this image in Photoshop and just placed it in the software. So, in this comparison [from i1Profiler] between Epson Archival matte and Hahnemuhle Watercolour 210, the watercolour paper has a distinctly larger gamut and visibly better print quality. BTW if you are wondering about some of the very big sizes – they are for other larger printers – the list just lumps them all together]

It’s also the only printer currently using Epson 107 series inks, though that situation might change. Quoted yields are extrapolated based on Epson original methodology from the print simulation of Test Patterns provided in ISO/IEC 29103 based on the inks included with this printer and photos printed in a 10x15cm format. Quoted yields are NOT based on ISO/IEC29102. Quoted yields may vary depending on the images that you are printing, the paper type that you are using, the frequency of your prints and environmental conditions such as temperature. During the initial printer setup, a certain amount of ink is used to fill the print head's nozzles, therefore the yield of the initial bundled set can be lower. The dye ink set works well on many types of paper – probably lowest quality comes with baryta types – they are meant for pigment inks. If you want to print on baryta style papers buy a printer which works well with them, don’t complain when a cheaper one doesn’t ;-)

The printer can pair with your mobile phone for direct printing, or via a local network. Use the Epson app for this and with supported papers, the results can look quite reasonable [for a direct print from a phone]. Enjoy high quality performance, low cost prints and ultimate convenience with the PIXMA G series of refillable ink tank printers. But with so many models on the market, how do you know which is right for you? That's where our team of experts come in. We've tested all the best printers, including the best small business printers and the best inkjet printers. And now, we've gone hands-on with the top ink tank models. As part of our review process, we evaluate print speed and quality, as well as overall performance. We also compare long-term running costs and potential uses for both home and office. Third-party dyes are available that can cut costs further, and these sources also allow this printer to use dye sublimation inks, turning the ET-18100 into an A3 capable production platform for short-run T-shirt design printing.

It’s tempting to extrapolate those numbers and assume an A4 or A3 print will take a very long time, but curiously that’s not the case. Additional features: Think about any additional features you may want in a printer, such as automatic duplexing (double-sided printing), scanning and copying capabilities, or the ability to print from a mobile device. It is well connected too with both Ethernet and Wi-Fi, including Wi-Fi Direct and Apple AirPrint compatibility. There’s no Bluetooth or NFC, but there is an SD Card slot alongside a front USB Host port behind that front flap. There are three separate paper trays, which is great for loading up both plain and photo paper and switching between them automatically. Each tray is rather limited in its capacity, however, with the main tray only holding only 80 to 100 sheets of A4. The generous 10.9cm touchscreen provides an intuitive user interface while also allowing you to preview your print at a useful size before printing. Printer makers have become masters of diversion when it comes to the cost of ownership in regard to ink supplies. VAT is included, but note that delivery charges are not included in the pricing calculations. Prices are subject to change due to market conditions.

For accurate layout/positioning it’s best to use the Epson software to print to the CD/DVD or ID card slots. If your needs are less intense, then, buying the Epson doesn’t make a lot of financial sense and you’d be better off choosing the Canon instead. Another issue you may face is your laptop or computer - some printers will only work with Windows devices. In these circumstances, the best printers for Mac will be a better choice. The Epson EcoTank ET-18100 is a 6 ink A3+ (13″ width) inkjet printer. The dye based ink set is optimised for printing colour photos on RC type photo papers. Printer features: ET-18100 Printer review

The ET-18100 is in many ways quite a basic printer. It has no LCD screen and just a few lights and buttons for an interface. No EtherNet networking and just the one top feed slot for paper.
