About this deal

Set in Italy, near the end of World War II, it is the story of retiring Colonel Richard Cantwell. He visits a small town near Venice, where he meets his (very much) younger girlfriend, Renata. He is fifty one, she is nineteen. The Colonel is a somewhat brash and rude man, who falls into a 'military' response too easily, but Hemingway examines his wanting to be less rude, and less confrontational. During a trip to Italy not long before writing the novel, Hemingway met young Adriana Ivancich, with whom he became infatuated, and he used her as the model for the female character in the novel. The novel's central theme is death, and, more importantly, how death is faced. One biographer and critic sees a parallel between Hemingway's Across the River and Into the Trees and Thomas Mann's Death in Venice. I know Hemingway is not for everyone, but I like his writing style. I don't read his books for plot; I read them for the lines, for his ability to express complicated things simply and for his ability to capture the inherent differences between the sexes. Differences there are. Upon rereading portions of this book, Across the River and Into the Trees is more complex than I thought. I’m still thinking about it. I judged ~~ misjudged actually ~~ this as a realistic love story. It is a story of confronting death. Is it possible to love a book just for the atmosphere it creates, the pictures you get when reading it? Certainly.

In 2016, Pierce Brosnan, Isabella Rossellini, and María Valverde joined the cast of a feature film adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's Across the River and into the Trees, with Martin Campbell set to direct from a screenplay by Peter Flannery. [1] [2] In September 2020, Paula Ortiz replaced Campbell as director, every role was recast, and Liev Schreiber, Matilda De Angelis, Laura Morante, Javier Cámara, and Giancarlo Giannini joined the cast. [3] In November, Josh Hutcherson was added to the cast, with Danny Huston joining the following year in February. [4] [5] Principal photography for the film was scheduled to begin in Venice in October 2020 in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic in Italy with cinematographer Javier Aguirresarobe. [6] On March 3, 2021, it was reported that production had concluded and that editing would be done by Kate and Stuart Baird. [7] Release [ edit ] Kit, Borys (September 7, 2020). Terse literary style of Ernest Miller Hemingway, an American writer, ambulance driver of World War I , journalist, and expatriate in Paris during the 1920s, marks short stories and novels, such as The Sun Also Rises (1926) and The Old Man and the Sea (1952), which concern courageous, lonely characters, and he won the Nobel Prize of 1954 for literature.

John O'Hara wrote in The New York Times; "The most important author living today, the outstanding author since the death of Shakespeare, has brought out a new novel. The title of the novel is Across the River and Into the Trees. The author, of course, is Ernest Hemingway, the most important, the outstanding author out of the millions of writers who have lived since 1616." [6] Tennessee Williams, in The New York Times, wrote: "I could not go to Venice, now, without hearing the haunted cadences of Hemingway's new novel. It is the saddest novel in the world about the saddest city, and when I say I think it is the best and most honest work that Hemingway has done, you may think me crazy. It will probably be a popular book. The critics may treat it pretty roughly. But its hauntingly tired cadences are the direct speech of a man's heart who is speaking that directly for the first time, and that makes it, for me, the finest thing Hemingway has done." [28] Across the River and Into the Trees falls short of the works I've listed above. It was as if Hemingway had become less authentic in his writing. Thankfully, The Old Man and the Sea would revitalize his reputation.

But most of us can identify only vicariously with Jake Barnes and Henry and Robert Jordan and the Old Man. Maybe the Old Man has the most resonance with us, because we all participate in the myth of Sisyphus, whether we cloak it in the pious delusions of religion or not.

The last full-length novel that Hemingway published in his lifetime, “Across the River and Into the Trees” is a post-WWII drama that follows an American Army officer, Colonel Richard Cantwell (Schreiber), damaged both physically and mentally by the war, whose unraveling plans to spend a quiet weekend in Venice are upended by a chance encounter with a remarkable young woman.

Brosnan will star in and Campbell will direct Across the River and Into the Trees, a feature that will be produced by Robert MacLean, John Smallcombe, Kirstin Roegner and Claudia Bluemhuber. William J. Immerman will executive produce. The latter knows he will die and accepts his fate with a fatality, without bitterness. But he takes life head-on while striving to fight against the chance that condemns him and, thus, tries to postpone the fateful date of his death, but, unfortunately, this will be the strongest. Cantwell's own thoughts about his age, purpose, usefulness, and mortality are engrossing. But when Hemingway translates these thoughts into to dialogue the story falls flat. Hemingway, always stoic and disciplined, could not find the words needed to express Cantwell's emotions. Wiseman, Andreas (September 7, 2020). Hemingway biographer Carlos Baker says Hemingway captured the theme of "the three ages of man," and in writing the book he finally objectified his own youthful traumatic war experiences. [11] Baker sees a thematic parallel between Thomas Mann's Death in Venice and Across the River and into the Trees, presented in a series of commonalities and differences. Death in Venice is set in the summer on Venice's Lido; Hemingway puts Cantwell in Venice in the winter. Mann's protagonist is a writer; Hemingway's a soldier. Both faced death, and in the face of death sought solace in a much younger character. [20] Cantwell reminisces about the past while Renata (an 18-year-old countess with whom Cantwell spends the last days of his life) lives in the present. Cantwell says that "Every day is a new and fine illusion" where a kernel of truth can be found. [21] Cantwell is a character in opposition: a tough soldier yet a tender friend and lover. The two Cantwells at times overlap and bleed into one another. [21] Hemingway added yet another layer in the characterization: 50-year-old Cantwell in his dying day is "in an intense state of awareness" of his younger self of 1918 to the point that meld – yet retain the differences wrought by time.
