About this deal

Within this expansion, you’ll find everything you need to add a Recusant-class Destroyer to your fleets, beginning with a beautifully detailed, pre-painted miniature. Two ship cards bring this miniature to life on your tabletop as either a Light Destroyer or a Support Destroyer, each featuring their own unique armament and upgrade bar. Again Anakin aside, what is the general consensus around the rest of the Rapid Reinforcements content?

In a previous article, I explained what Star Wars: Armada is all about. In case you missed it, the short version is: Sector Fleet: Higher point fleet builds (600, 800, 1200), custom play area, following fleet building rules. On January 3, 2020 FFG published an errata for Admiral Raddus commander upgrade card and the Onager booklet, that allows Evade tokens to cancel 2 dice at extreme range.

I have not played Armada since the before times, my last game was late 2019. For the sake of returning and new players, recent contention about commander Anakin Skywalker from Rapid Reinforcements II aside:

Although poorly named, the light carrier is a unique ship in Armada. It is the game’s only purpose-designed carrier and its release cemented the Empire’s reputation as a leader in naval aviation. Despite having no notable durability or anti-ship firepower, it is the core of most Imperial squadron fleets and there are a lot of those. The strength of this ship lies in the fighter group it commands, and those Imperial fighter groups are capable of anything from bombing runs to objective manipulation. Fit Boosted Comms and Expanded Hangar Bay, then season with an officer and title of choice. Beyond the ship cards themselves, 14 upgrade cards invite you to make your Recusant-class Destroyer even more specialized with additional weapons, titles, and officers such as the Commerce Guild’s Are you fond of Star Wars? Does the thought of commanding capital ships and their supporting squadrons appeal to you? Do you have an officer’s outlook and think that tromping around in the mud is beneath you? If you answered yes to two of those questions, then Star Wars: Armada might be your thing. Fantasy Flight Games (FFG) is no longer the developer of the game. In 2021 the IP was transferred to Atomic Mass Games (AMG).The Separatists field an array of lethal warships supported by swarms of cheap fighters. Uniquely, many of their upgrades emphasise debilitation of the enemy through harassment and debuffs. Their ships are designed to hit hard from the front and sides alike, while having the necessary speed to get out of (or into) trouble swiftly. Separatist players must contend with fighters that are highly co-dependent on their ships, and the same small roster of the Republic. In Armada, you enter this ongoing conflict as a fleet admiral with either the Imperial Navy or Rebel Alliance. Your ships have come upon the enemy. Conflict is imminent. Thousands of crew race to their battle stations, preparing for massive exchanges of turbolaser fire. Thousands will die, but it is your job to command the fleet to victory. You must overcome your foes. You must achieve your objective. There is no room for failure. Take your time and give it thought. No matter how things go, I hope to see you on the bridge – and remember to ready that Salvo token. Republic ship recommendations: Venator-class Star Destroyer. It’s big, it’s magnificent. Follow up with a Pelta-class frigate (make sure to get the Republic version, or you just joined the Rebel Alliance!). The ‘clumsy’ and ‘stupid’ Admiral Ozzel allows you to make an aggressive first-round movement with one of your ships. Absolutely vital on Onager builds designed to fire in the first round of combat, and useful on ships that tend to lag behind. His ability is single-use and triggers at the beginning of the game. Between choking him and Needa with Vader (Officer), you’re basically just re-creating the Star Wars canon through normal gameplay. That’s called good game design.
