About this deal

Whilst all this is going on his personal life is still a mess and he gains an unexpected relative or two. His so called cousin is awaiting trial for all his viscous crimes and one by one he is having the witnesses taken out of the equation, one of those on the list is Callandine!!! Nothing comes easily to Calladine, his private life is taking a turn for the worst, his professional life is in jeopardy an his personal safety is in the balance. I would like to thank Netgalley and Joffe Books for allowing me an advance copy of Dead Lost, the latest addition to the Calladine and Bayliss series of police procedurals. I do like the players in these books: Ruth, Imogen, Rocco. I don’t like Lydia or DCI Jones. Lydia is just slutty and Jones is a cheap-skate, too concerned with saving money than solving crimes. The estate is well described & you get a real sense of the hopelessness & resulting violence that flourishes in an environment of poverty & lost dreams.

Somebody is taking out the drug dealers....and killing them piece by piece. When a bag of fingers is found in the park, the detectives find 9 fingers and 3 thumbs. Because it is drug dealers, police are afraid that a turf war is beginning. These drifters lived in the homeless village at the Old Chase Cotton Mill, in a camp, squatting on the land. A case that was solved early in the book seemed to have little impact and no mention of repercussions, so why was it included? Was it simply to make the team appear overwhelmed with cases? DS Ruth Bayliss was as close as ever to Calladine, but they are just best friends. She seemed to be more of a sounding board and a conscience telling him what to do in his personal life. Bayliss also has her own personal issues. Both were a bit repetitive. The story follows an investigation into what is perceived to be a serial murder. Both victims are young thugs/criminals who spend their time on a low income housing estate selling drugs and worse. The Hobfield estate holds out little optimism for the youth who live there. They all seem sullen and antagonistic towards police.I found the engagement of previous characters believable and this helps drive the story forward and makes for a more 3 dimensional accouunt. Dead Wrong” by Helen H. Durrant, is the first in a new series of detective thrillers featuring police partners , D.I. Tom Calladine and D.S. Ruth Bayliss. I decided to read these three books in the series; Dead Wrong, Dead Silent and Dead List, before I started a new series by this author (Dark Murder). This is my first read of any novel by author Helen H Durrant but I was drawn in by her writing style and flawed but believable characters. Police partners, D.I. Calladine and D.S. Ruth Bayliss face one of their toughest challenges yet. A group of homeless people have set up camp in the grounds of a disused cotton mill belonging to local businessman Damien Chase. Bayliss is now 7 months pregnant, and while her heart is in the chase, her body needs to slow it down. Seems like it's going to be Calladine and the rest of the team .. including a new supevisor who seems to have it in for Calladine.

I read the first book in this series a few months ago and liked DI Tom Calladine so I was looking forward to this second book. In the first book, Tom had a lot of problems. Most have not resolved in this book, but that's what makes him interesting. His love life hasn't changed, his boss is still a poor manager, and his mother has recently died. In this novel, we get to appreciate the rapport between the two detectives Ballantine and Bayliss, one of dedication and respect for one another. Their work is their life. We also learn more about their personal lives. Ms. Durrant has done a great job keeping the pace going, jumping between scenes of the twisted perp carrying out his dastardly deeds and Tom treading water in attempt to handle his frazzled love life and his demented mother. Then we also have him managing the investigation in spite of his inept supervisor. Perhaps it was because I was distracted and didn’t pay attention to details in the early going, but I was totally surprised when the killer was revealed. It really did keep you trying to figuring out who the killer was. I was still trying to figure it out very late in the book, and I like that. Knowing who the killer is right off the bat is not for me, and I would never have guessed who the killer was.

Greco has yet another case on his hands when someone is discovered murdered. She was a young lady and they found her in a house that was totally empty. It’s a strange case, and Stephen must collaborate with his talented team to try and figure out as much about the victim as they can. Detectives Harry Lennox and Jess Wilde have never seen anything like it. The dead woman is dressed up like a Victorian doll. She’s wearing a long, white dress, a bloodstained blonde wig, and a mask with red, cupid-bow lips. I found the story passable if not always plausible and I may read books 3 & 4 in due time. The only saving grace is then are shorter than the average novel but therein lies a further problem. Although the wtiting is taunt and there is urgency in the developing case I miss the time spent misleading the reader, entertaining the reader and using words to carry a more rounded story.

I started a new series today. Yup… another one! A British police procedural (my favorite kind) set in the Pennine foothills of northern England on the outskirts of Manchester. Having read and enjoyed the previous novels in the series I am pleased to report that this is another good, absorbing read.

The story has several strands. The homeless camp seems to be the central point but a very unlikely one. When homeless men go missing will anyone care? Well Calladine and his team do and when their investigations turn up other possible crimes the team are struggling to work out what is going on. This is the fourth book in the Calladine and Bayliss series. I've read and enjoyed the previous three, and this one was equally good.

But one of the men is not what he seems. He has a secret he will do anything to cover up. And once Calladine and Bayliss investigate, they find the crimes go much further than they could have ever imagined. DEAD WRONG is the first in a new series of detective thrillers featuring D.S. Ruth Bayliss and D.I. Tom Calladine. DI HARRY LENNOX began his career in Glasgow, but due to a traumatic incident, transferred to West Yorkshire and then Ryebridge. He blames a Scottish villain for what happened and is afraid that he’ll catch up with him. Harry is single, thirtysomething and has a chaotic lifestyle. She likes to set many of her stories in an area that she has resided in for years. It’s located between 2 counties of Yorkshire and Lancashire. The beautiful English spot is between the hills and the city and gives locals the chance to enjoy a mixture of the country side and the industrial aspects of an area and all of the character that these settings generate. MEET DETECTIVES HARRY LENNOX AND JESS WILDE IN THIS BRILLIANT NEW CRIME SERIES SET IN THE PICTURESQUE PENNINE FOOTHILLS IN THE NORTH OF ENGLAND.Dead Wrong is the first in the Calladine and Bayliss series. I've had this book for some time and came across it whilst scrolling through on my Kindle. Sooo many books! *sigh*
