About this deal

Large bale systems are designed to minimize labor, not waste. It is important to remember that outside storage of large bales will increase hay losses due to weather-related spoilage. Spoiled, rotted, or moldy hay is often refused by all but the hungriest of cattle and will result in more waste during feeding. Large round bales Figure 2. A hay ring permits feeding of large round bales in the field with minimal loss. Biomechanically and environmentally, horses are designed to feed with their heads down for 80% of their active feeding time while maintaining near-constant motion. This head-down position has evolved to open the horse’s airways and the feeding apparatus, allowing his nasal passages to drain and producing sufficient saliva to assist with chewing and provide a barrier to stomach acid. Colic is a word used to describe many different types of abdominal pain in horses and can be caused by both haylage and hay for a few reasons.

If you’re at all unsure about the best way of feeding your animal or have any concerns about specific nutritional requirements at different times of their life, ask your local veterinary practice for advice.

In general, cattle waste (remove but do not consume) about 25% of each bale fed in a round bale feeder. There are plenty of cattle feeders out there. Here’s a snapshot of 4 really good cattle feeders. Bunk Feeder by Farmco Haylage beats out hay by quite a bit in the sugar levels department. This is because the sugars in haylage are converted to volatile fatty acids, and lactic acid during fermentation. Haylage also has more protein, is more digestible, and is overall more nutritious than hay.

Large square bales (approximately 4 foot x 4 foot x 8 foot) are increasing in popularity, especially with commercial hay growers (Figure 5). These bales are popular with western hay producers because Each day, slightly reduce their old food and replace it with some of their new food. At the end of the transition period, your guinea pigs should be eating their new nuggets happily with no issues! What about guinea pig treats? If a horse is on box rest or stabled for part of the day or night, providing nets with different types of forage such as hay, haylage, barley straw or weeds – such as cow parsley and nettles – in different places around the stable can also help to provide some variety, as well as encouraging a small amount of movement between them. Prolonged stabling – particularly in the case of box rest – can be stressful for your horse, so it’s important to ease this by providing enrichment within his four walls. Consider… The grass that is used to make haylage is cut quite early on. After that, it is only allowed to wilt slightly, and not completely dry out. Then, around 24-48 hours after it gets cut, it gets baled and then wrapped in polythene to be preserved. Grass hay is the most important part of a guinea pig’s diet and should form 80% of their daily diet. The best type of grass hay for adult guinea pigs is long stem Timothy Hay and Meadow Hay and this essential food source should ALWAYS be available to your guinea pigs at ALL times. I’m worried that my horse might be bored. Is there any way to supply his forage that will also provide him with some natural stimulation?

If you’ve got some golden oldies, they may benefit from mature rabbit food with added glucosamine to support healthy joints, and added ginseng for increased vitality.

1. Loose Round Bales

The majority of your piggies’ diet – around 85-90% – should be tasty, top-quality feeding hay and grazed grass (never feed grass cuttings as this will make your guinea pigs unwell). As a guide, provide each pet with at least their own body size in fresh guinea pig feeding hay every day.

Hay isn’t usually wrapped in plastic so farmers have to make sure that it is as dry as possible, as this is usually the only way it is preserved. Although, some farmers do sell wrapped hay, and it kind of falls in between haylage and hay because it’s more moist than hay but less moist than haylage. Limiting feed on a per head basis is best done with the help of a nutritionist to ensure your cattle maintain the proper body condition and meet their nutrient requirements. Success with limit-feeding is entirely dependent on having adequate bunk space. Hay stored outside usually has more spoilage during storage and lower palatability than hay stored inside. Cattle will waste a greater percentage of poor-quality hay than they will of good-quality hay. Animals fed high-quality hay early in the season will often refuse poor-quality hay when it is offered later. The fundamental difference between hay and haylage is the way that the grass is conserved. Hay is cut when grass is mature and left to dry in the field before being baled and stored. To conserve hay and prevent it from spoiling or going mouldy, the grass needs to be sufficiently dry before baling. Typically hay will be 85% or above dry matter which relies on good weather conditions to achieve – not always easy in the UK! Hay of insufficient dry matter will not store well and will be very likely to go mouldy making it unsuitable to feed.More than 50 percent of it is wasted by either poor storage methods or improper feeding practices, or both (Figure 1). LITCHFIELD, Minn. — Whether there is an excess of hay or a shortage in your system, efficiently feeding your hay can drastically affect the success of your operation. Young guinea pigs or mother guinea pigs who are nursing their young need additional calcium in their diet, so Alfalfa Hay can be fed to these guinea pigs. Can I use feeding hay for bedding?
