About this deal

The design is based on the setting and thread count of a Gunn tartan kilt, as worn by Roy Williamson also known as The Corries. It was named after William and Mary Gunn. Traditional 18th-century colors are used in this particular design which includes Lichen Green and Lochan Blue hues. Flower of Scotland is made with the highest quality fabric and the most beautifully designed wool available in North America - making it a great choice for browsing something “made from home”. You can always find high-quality Scottish goods like these at Gretna Green, where you will discover an abundance of items to commemorate your love for Scotland in one way or another! What is the Flower of Scotland Tartan? Sleeve/ Crown of Shoulder to Cuff: Taken from the crown of the shoulder to your cuff (with a relaxed arm, don't straighten.) The song was officially adopted in 1990 at the Rugby Union Five Nations match, Scotland vs England, at Murrayfield Stadium (Scotland won!). In 1997 the Scottish Football Association followed suit and allowed Flower of Scotland as Scotland's pre-game anthem. The song repeatedly references 'Proud Edward's Army', representing the English battalion led by King Edward II which is believed to have been the largest to ever invade Scotland, with 25,000 lives at his disposal. Despite only boasting 6,000 soldiers of his own, Robert the Bruce defeated proud Edward, defending "your wee bit [of] Hill and Glen", i.e. the natural beauty of the region's landscape. As the lyrics have it, the Scots "sent them homeward".

Blue Line Decide where you’d like to wear your kilt. You can wear it up at your natural waist, which is a wee bit above your belly button, and higher than guys tend to wear their pants nowadays. You can also wear your kilt lower, closer to the hips like your jeans or shorts. It’s up to you and what you find most comfortable. Having said that, if you’re a Gentleman of Substance I generally suggest wearing your kilt higher up. It’s much more flattering than having the waistband under your stomach, and the front of the kilt will hang nicely. Interestingly, Flower of Scotland cannot be played correctly on Scotland's most famous instrument - the bagpipes. A flattened 7th cannot be produced on bagpipes; it still sounds excellent despite the altered note. Roy Williamson (left) and Ronnie Brown of The Corries. What does Flower of Scotland sound like? However, the song goes on to lament that "the Hills are bare now" and the "land that is lost now", reflecting the sense that even though Scotland won the battle, the war for total independence is yet to be conquered.

Flower of Scotland lyrics

Thistles aren't just found in gardens, parks and in the countryside. Keep your eyes peeled and you will see the insignia emblem cropping up all over Scotland, from the strip of the international rugby team and football clubs, to local businesses and major organisations and corporations, to the uniforms of police officers. Did you know? Other suggestions have included "Both Sides of the Tweed" and "Scotland Will Flourish", also by The Corries. "Freedom Come-All-ye" also has support as a potential new anthem. What is the British national anthem? While you can search the Register without having to register and login, you will need to create an account to: - I think it's a good song, but I can see why some wouldn't like it in both music and meaning. What is the national flower of Scotland? The Tartan Fly Plaidwas a large piece of cloth that goes over the left shoulder of the wearer. It is a simple square of cloth, typically 46" X 46", with fringed edges, and a box pleat is sewn in one corner. Fly Plaid Brooch

For each Commonwealth Games since 2010, Flower of Scotland has been used for the national anthem and replaced the song Scotland the Brave. Why no official Scottish national anthem?

Personalisation

Sleeve: Taken from the crown of the shoulder to your cuff, following the contour of your sleeve (with a relaxed arm, don't straighten.) The debate trundles on, with just this year, Scotland's first minister commenting that although Flower of Scotland is a great song, "The words are not the most uplifting and forward-looking." Her two suggestions were Highland Cathedral and Caledonia by Dougie Maclean. Former Deputy Scottish Conservative leader Murdo Fraser has previously labelled the 'Flower of Scotland' lyrics "jingoistic" and opposition to the anthem has criticised the "vindictive" nature of its chorus. Many think that if Scotland is to gain its national anthem, it should be more upbeat and focus less on past events and look at a positive Scottish future. So there we have it - Scotland's national anthem (sort of). For now, Flower of Scotland will be Scotland's unofficial national anthem until the powers that be decided otherwise!
