About this deal

For instance, Card Format is buried at MENU > Wrench > User Setting > Format, and it took me years on other Fujifilm cameras to discover that to get live color RGB histograms before you take a picture you have to do it by assigning one of the custom keys to Histogram and then press it — and no one at Fujifilm knew that (see my User's Guide). If you have the camera set in one of many ways in which flash won't fire (like Silent Shutter), the flash option simply disappears and makes you have to guess what to do to get flash going — and this goes on and on. Geesh! Staying with the screen, the XT20 is equipped with a 3in / 3:2 shaped / 1040k dot / LCD panel that can tilt vertically upwards by about 90 degrees and angle down by about 45 degrees. In this respect it shares similar flexibility to the screens on the Olympus EM10 II and Sony A6300, although Panasonic’s Lumix G80 / G85 enjoys the greater flexibility of a side-hinged fully-articulated screen. But 4k on the XT20 is still capturing finer detail than its 1080p modes, so to illustrate this, here’s 100% crops from frame grabs of 1080p footage on the left and 4k on the right, both filmed with the same lens at the same focal length. Here’s the full view first. Many XT20 owners will be pairing it with the XF 18-55mm f2.8-4 zoom, so I spent a lot of time trying the combination for autofocus performance. I had no complaints regarding Single AF / AFS mode, with the XT20 snapping-onto most subjects without issue. I had variable success with Continuous AF / AFC though. It worked fine for subjects of modest speed – like jogging or kids and pets playing – but for anything much faster – like approaching cyclists or vehicles – I found the XT20 and XF 18-55mm delivered a much lower hit-rate. In typical bursts of around 16 frames, I’d typically only have about half of them in focus, regardless of the AF area mode, shutter type and burst speed.

There are 10 ISO settings available on the Fujifilm X-T20 for JPEGs and RAW files. Here are some 100% crops which show the noise levels for each ISO setting. JPEG There’s just a single SD card slot on the X-T20, compared to the X-T2’s two, while it doesn’t support UHS-II cards. It gives you good results wide open and becomes razor sharp from f/2. The bokeh has an excellent character with smooth and very pleasant results particularly between f/1.2 and f/2. The AF motor is not the fastest compared to other lenses but it is enough for portrait work. Generally this did pretty well and produced better results than Set 4, which prioritizes would-be subjects closer to the camera but is a little more 'jumpy' and expects slightly more predictable subject movement. The six mis-focused images included here were the only mis-focused ones in a run of 50 images. If these 600×450 pixel crops are about 3" (7.5cm) wide on your screen, then the complete image printed at this same high magnification would be about 21 × 31" (1.7 × 2.6 feet or 50 × 80 cm). Delve into the menus and you’ll find an interval timer, with up to 999 or infinite frames captured at intervals between one second and 24 hours. You can also set a delay up to 24 hours before the sequence begins, although the camera still won’t assemble them into a timelapse video afterwards, something both Olympus and Panasonic now offer as standard. The Fujifilm X-T20 is an adorable little camera that looks and feels like a baby 35mm SLR. It is dwarfed by a full size 35mm SLR like the Nikon FTn Photomic:

Externally the XT20 looks almost identical to the XT10, with only a handful of minor control differences. As such, it’s a compact, retro-styled camera that resembles a shrunken-down version of the flagship XT2 with a wealth of manual control dials and a centrally-located viewfinder hump. The XF 50mm is the most recent addition to the XF line-up at the time of publishing this article. It is based on the same criteria as the other f/2 lenses such as the 23mm and 50mm: it is light yet solid with the advantage of weather-sealing, and features a silent and fast AF motor. It is definitely the most affordable option for portraits today. Like everything from Fujifilm, the X-T20's color rendition is highly optimized for people pictures with glowing skin tones, but too dull for vivid photos of nature, places and things. You can't beat this little camera for people photos with interchangeable lenses. The card is right by the door hinge so it's difficult to grab. I usually press it in and let it shoot across the room to get it out. The X-T20 can take a respectable 350 shots on a single charge of its 8.7Wh battery. A high performance mode, which improves AF performance and LCD/EVF quality, will drain the battery at a higher rate. As always, the precise number of shots you get will depend on how you shoot, and getting twice this number is not unusual. However, these standardized figures do give a good idea of how much better or worse one camera's battery life will be than another's.
