About this deal

Hetty Feather – The main character, who has been abandoned as a baby at the Foundling Hospital. She is well known for her red hair and her fiery temper. John – Hetty's foster father, who works as a farmer and is kind but domineering towards the children. I personally really enjoyed Hetty Feather, it was a well written story, it's written as if Hetty is talking to you and she is such a vibrant, boisterous character that I really felt like she was here talking to me. I could visualize everything she was telling me and I could really sympathize with her. Returned: Matron Bottomly, Walter Brittle, Ned, Judd Mortimer, Donald Cranbourne and Nurse Macclesfield The series revolves around Hetty Feather, who was abandoned as a baby at the Foundling Hospital. She and her foster brother Gideon Smeed were fostered for a while by Peg Cotton, but when they turned 5, they had to return to the Foundling Hospital.

A distraught couple have come to reclaim their child, but which foundling could it be? With Hetty determined to find out, someone could be leaving with the parents for good. But will Matron allow the foundling to be reclaimed without a fight? Meanwhile, Gideon plans on escaping in search of his parents, but Vince and Judd have other plans.

Tropes specific to each book:

There's quite a lot of cruelty in this book, which I wasn't particularly fond of. There weren't very many funny moments in it, though I did like a lot of the supporting characters, particularly those in the circus. I was also really amused by the little monkeys - I could see them performing really well inside my mind. Last Kiss: Jem and Hetty rightbefore his wedding, which only added subsequent confusion to Hetty's feelings about Jem. London, 1876 and Hetty Feather is just a tiny baby when her mother leaves her at the Foundling Hospital. The Hospital cares for abandoned children - but Hetty must first live with a foster family until she is big enough to go to school.

I love Diamond because it is so realistic; going to the circus is fun, but that is one necessarily how you would describe life behind the ring and out into training. And the fact that Diamond is so young and has no choice about what she can do makes you see things from another's point of view. Willful Blindness: Mrs Ruby in Little Stars pretends Samson is an angel who can do no wrong (although its implied she knows what he's really like.) Hetty meets Matron living on the streets, while Mathias' reunion with the gang threatens his wedding to Harriet. Meanwhile, George plans to send his children away and return to India.

Bebbo/Mister was a perfectly horrible character. I think his personality outside the ring contrasted starkly with his personality in the ring. Generally speaking, clowns are considered as funny, not cruel... but outside the ring, he was an awful person. I know I am a bit old for Jacqueline Wilson now, but she was such a big part of my childhood that I can't resist. I don't read every new book by her anymore, but earlier this year I read 'Hetty Feather' after a friend recommended it and I really liked the character and her story. I went on to read book 2 'Sapphire Battersea' and loved how much she changed and grew up that I had to know what would happen to little Hetty next, so I eagerly awaited this book.I put in a request at the library (joining a rather long list) my copy came in yesterday and I started it this morning. I had finished it by lunch time. Silly Prayer: Hetty is asked to say grace, but she's never heard of it, so she literally says the word "grace". Overall, I was not as enamored. Hetty is young here though (baby to, I think, around 10 or 12) and in less control of her life. She is also not quite the same feisty girl here as she is by the events in Little Stars, though that confidence does not come out of nowhere. She is bold and impulsive and a great character. She is raised by a farming family until five, which is fun to see and heart-breaking to watch end, and is then returned to a regimented life at the Foundling Hospital. That leads to a lot of routine, though there is some adventure again before the end. You won’t want people or her world to disappoint her. They do, though Jacqueline Wilson manages a happy-for-now ending.

The City vs. the Country: The premise of the latter half of the book. Hetty struggles badly with the monotony of village life and the gossip that carries regarding her relationship with Jem, and eventually seeks new adventure at the Circus. The gang realise they need to break through a wall to get to the jewel – but can they do it without being discovered? And what will Agnes do when she finds out Gideon’s been lying to her? But Hetty is no longer a simple country girl, and begins to fear she'll never truly belong anywhere. And even when she is reunited with her beloved childhood sweetheart Jem, Hetty still longs for adventure - especially when an enchanting figure from her past makes an unexpected reappearance. Could a more exciting future lie ahead for Hetty? This is about the book character. For the TV show character, see Hetty Feather (TV show character).Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: Madame Berenice and her powers as a medium. She can't provide actual materializations and uses her sister Emily to pretend when Hetty requests it, but she also claimed to find Saul, Hetty's brother who died of flu, wanting to speak to her when Hetty never mentioned him. Be Careful What You Wish For: In Sapphire Battersea, Hetty believes she can easily quit service and make enough money for a house for her and her mother, but scullery maids made barely enough to survive. When she quits service, she realises you have to make money to survive...made especially painful when her mother dies of consumption.
