About this deal

You'll be changing your baby's nappy several times a day, so having a clean, soft and comfortable surface is a must. If you need added reassurance, a wedge-shaped changing mat with curved, sloping sides can prevent your baby from rolling off, but you shouldn't be leaving them unattended when you change them, anyway. You don't have to buy a mat with a cotton cover, you can always use a soft towel to make it warmer for little ones, especially newborns. You may like pretty designs, but be warned, a baby changing mat has to be practical as well as good-looking and needs to be able to withstand a lot of mess!

Change pads usually have a waterproof bottom layer and a soft top layer. Some also have a built-in pillow for extra comfort, and/or padded sides to prevent your baby from rolling off. They often come with straps or loops so that they can be easily attached to a changing table, crib, or stroller. There are lots of different types of changing mats. There are mats that go onto a changing table, mats that fit on to the top of a cot (these must always be removed when not in use and when your baby is in the cot) and also foldable changing mats for travel. The best change pad for travel will depend on your needs and preferences. Some parents prefer a small, lightweight option that can be easily carried in a nappy bag, while others prefer a larger mat that can be used on top of a regular changing table. There are also travel bags and travel-sized changing tables available that can be used in hotel rooms or other rental accommodations. For foam pads: Cotton or polyester pad covers can be washed as usual in your washing machine, but avoid doing the same with the mat itself, as you’ll likely destroy it. Instead, thoroughly wipe it down, and allow it to air dry to prevent any staining. You could also try vacuuming the pad.

Pads with softer fills: These can sometimes be machine or hand washed, and you might like to use a splash of white vinegar, bleach, or stain remover to get rid of any soiling. Machine-washable: No – wash with warm soapy water and a soft sponge | Size: 70 × 46 × 10cm What we love And when it comes to changing diapers at home or at others’ homes, without a changing pad, you may be left with a nasty mess on your changing surface that isn’t easy to clean.

Belts: A safety belt can come in handy if you have a busy baby or toddler who doesn’t like diaper changes. It will give you peace of mind that your baby won’t escape and potentially get hurt when you’re cleaning them up. Does it offer special features? These days, many change mats are decorated with beautiful printed artwork. Some offer functional design features such as anti-roll wedge sides, which can be really useful, especially if you have a particularly wriggly baby. But the fact of the matter is that special features often add expense so if your budget is tight, you may well find that a basic change mat does the job perfectly well. Is a changing mat necessary? A changing mat will provide a clean, comfortable surface for you to change your baby on. It will be easy to wipe clean if any spills occur (which they will), and will support your baby while you get down to business. A big nursery décor trend is changing baskets. These baskets are often woven from natural materials and look super stylish. They’re practical too, as you can get a couple of liners and switch them around, and you can wash them to make sure everything is nice and clean. What are the key things to think about when buying a changing mat?A high-sided wedge-shaped mat can be useful for added peace of mind with a new baby, if you're worried that they might roll off. First, install the pad correctly according to the instructions. Anchor the pad to the surface securely using any provided fasteners, and test it thoroughly to make sure it’s secure.

Clean and disinfect the surface of the changing mat after every use with an antibacterial cleanser or wipes. In the early days of having a newborn, there's something magical about how much time you spend staring at your baby and marvelling at how wonderful they are. This special time will be filled with a lot of nappy changes! Not much can prepare you for how many dirty and wet nappies you will change in those first few months and years of parenthood. If you live in a home with stairs, you may find it easier to have one in the nursery and to also have one for downstairs to save you having to go up and down the stairs regularly when you need to change your baby at home. The first time you use the changing pad, lay your baby down and strap them in, then change the diaper. Only unfasten the strap when they’re done and fully clothed. To adequately test each changing mat, it’s used for changing a lot of nappies, of different aged children. For newborns, we consider the comfort and support a changing mat delivers, to keep seemingly less-robust newborns warm and safe during changes. For slightly older, wriggly children, safety is a priority, and so we assess how well toddlers fared on anti-roll change mats. In addition, we consider how easy a changing mat is to keep thoroughly clean, and how long they’re likely to withstand daily use without splitting or falling apart.

Waterproof material: Sometimes babies give you an extra surprise and pee on everything before you’ve had a chance to load a new diaper. Having a waterproof changing surface and a machine washable cover can save you from a lot of extra clean-up. Make sure you choose a waterproof changing mat that can be wipe-cleaned, and if you've got a slightly bigger budget, look for one that comes with a towelling or soft cotton cover for added warmth for your baby.

How do I clean it? – When a product is doing a messy, dirty job, it’s essential that it can be cleaned easily and frequently. Many mats can be wiped cleaned with a disinfectant spray or wipe. Fabric changing mats are more likely to absorb leaks and should be machine washable to ensure that they can be properly cleaned between uses. If you choose a fabric changing mat, you may need to consider purchasing two so that you always have one at your disposal while the other is in the wash.

Can we help?

The ideal changing mat for babies is padded and waterproof, with a surface that can be easily wipe-cleaned and a soft cotton washable cover for added comfort. We were given a fold-up changing mat with compartments for wipes and nappies from JoJo Maman Bébé. It was used every single day when DS2 was little, and now is always in the changing bag. I have no idea how I survived without it for DS1!” (Tried and tested by Mumsnet user BrioLover) Our verdict A padded, waterproof changing mat or pad is an essential product that every parent needs when it's time to change their baby's nappy. Buying a changing pad or mat is a must for travel and days out too, most baby changing bags have one included in the price, so you shouldn't have to buy one especially.
