About this deal

Interlinked smoke detectors use radios and other technologies to detect fires while being connected throughout your home's system. They will alert you if a fire starts in another area, giving you time to evacuate the home. Once they sense an issue, all the alarms in your home go off together to facilitate the location of potential dangers in other areas. You can read our full article about what is an interlinked smoke alarm. System incorporating one or more interlinked mains-powered smoke alarms (and heat alarms if required), each with an integral stand-by supply. They can be hardwire-interlinked or radio-interlinked. The stand-by supply must be tamper-proof and last the full life of the alarm.

The standard is enforced by the right of tenants to apply to the First-tier Tribunal for Scotland (Housing and Property Chamber) , so if you believe that your landlord is failing to comply, you can apply to the first-tier tribunal. Penalties for non-compliance would be determined by the tribunal. Specia list alarms Wireless interlinked smoke alarms are much more convenient than hardwired ones. There is no need to wire them up, and the installation cost is also much lower than wiring up a mains-powered fire alarm system or permanently installing hard-wired detectors. The requirements for CO alarms have also been expanded for all landlords, private and social, from just where a solid fuel burning appliance is fitted to include all fixed combustion appliances other than a gas cooker – though gas cookers can still be a source of lethal carbon monoxide, so Safelincs strongly recommends CO alarms be provided for these appliances as well. This could be critical if you’re out when there’s a fire. All of the smart smoke alarms we've tested are optical models. For shared ownership properties, as with other condition standards, responsibilities are set out in the occupancy agreement. However, in general, it is your responsibility as the proportion owner, rather than the registered social landlord, to meet the new fire and smoke alarm standard. Private rented property The new law has come about because of the Grenfell fire in London in 2017, and it applies to all Scottish homes.

Radio-interlinked alarms are sometimes referred to as wireless alarms, although this can be confusing when dealing with radio-interlinked units wired into the mains power supply in a building. Radio-interlinked alarms can be battery powered or mains powered, and we even offer battery operated smoke alarms, heat alarms, and carbon monoxide alarms with radio-interlink that contain a sealed battery which lasts the full ten years of the alarm's life. Pros: Good for bedrooms, landings and hallways, and near to kitchens as they aren’t as prone to false alarms from cooking. No one will be criminalised if they need more time, and there are no penalties for non-compliance. However, we would encourage everyone to install these alarms, which can help save lives. Help with costs From 1st October 2022 in England and Wales, The Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm (Amendment) Regulations 2022 will require all social housing providers and landlords to ensure suitable, working smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms are installed in their properties. This expands the scope of the 2015 landlord regulations which originally excluded social housing and focused on the private rental sector. We are providing funding through Care and Repair Scotland to help elderly and disabled people meet the new standard. These alarms are more sensitive to smaller particles of smoke produced by the flaming stage of fires than optical alarms, and more easily triggered by cooking – causing false alarms. Any mains-powered alarms, regardless of sensor type, must be permanently wired into a mains circuit. Alarms which use a mains plug are not suitable for the updated regulations. It is also important that these detectors are interlinked together through radio frequency signals and have an integrated sealed battery, as the best and cost-effective solution that will save you money on the short and long-term. While the Wireless interlinked smoke detectors seem to be more expensive than the hard-wired ones, there are several factors that should be considered.

If you are renting and you have not done it so, speak to your landlord and make sure the new standard is met, at no additional cost from your side. If not, start looking for a new place to rent before the rules come into force. Is Your Home Fully Protected Yet? The guidance also states “where an existing partial or full mains operated heat and smoke detection system is being altered it would normally be expected to replace mains wired devices with mains wired units.” This should be considered when undertaking extension, alteration or conversion work and any alternative arrangement should be agreed with the local authority verifier in advance. A building warrant is sometimes required for the installation of fire and CO alarms Now that the alarms law has changed in Scotland, you'll need to install interlinked heat and smoke alarms in your home.Cutting Edge Technology – Our smoke alarms use the latest photoelectric sensor and our heat alarms utilise an ultra sensitive temperature sensor The new standards for fire and smoke alarms extend those which currently apply in the Private Rented Sector (PRS) to housing of all tenures, your landlord should already be complying. With the wireless alarms, you don't need to wire up anything extra in your home or replace a device if it depreciates in another location. In contrast, hard-wired devices require complex installation process and expensive equipment. If you ever decide to expand your fire alarm system, this will be clearly easier and cost-effective with battery powered units.
