About this deal

Aldi’s bottle is beautiful to look at, the snow covered trees and sparking gold flakes in the gin giving the drink the ultimate festive feeling. Add to it that it lights up - with two different settings - it's certainly impressive. The company explained that following advice from the Portman Group’s Advisory Service, the design had been simplified and that the product originally had three ballerinas but this was revised to feature only one which was only visible when looking directly through the bottle, due to reverse printing. Now it's time to introduce something totally new, and this year we're so excited to launch three incredible new festive liqueurs in a brand-new look. Inspired by the season, these stylish bottles each feature a gorgeous gold pinecone pattern with our much-imitated LED light inside to illuminate the colourful liqueurs. They're guaranteed to bring a bit of festive fairy-tale magic into your home, and thanks to the cork stopper they can be used again and again for homemade drinks, or as decorations like vases or fairy light holders." The retailer's famous Clementine Gin Liqueur Snow Globe, which lights up and includes edible 23-carat gold leaf, proves a smash hit year after year, with many struggling to get their hands on it for Christmas gifting. The M&S bottle looks beautiful sat on a drinks table at Christmas. It lights up by pushing a button underneath and stays lit for over 30 seconds. Once shaken the gold leaf really does make it look like a magical snow globe as it floats around, shimmering in the light.

The adult tipple is proving to be a show stopper in the lead up to Christmas, with it being a popular choice and looking to sell out fast. These alcoholic drinks are being sold as a novelty which is against the principle of the Portman rules and are encouraging children to see them as a fun item.” Complainant: The Panel noted that compliance under Code rule 3.1 would be determined by the overall impression conveyed by a product and subsequently then considered the cues on the bottle which might indicate whether the product was alcoholic. The Panel noted that there was no writing on the sides of the bottle but noted that the underside of the product contained a further label which included information about the alcoholic nature of the product by referring to the alcohol type and the product’s alcoholic strength by volume. However, the Panel considered that the font size was very small in relation to other text on the label, and that the largest body of text was in relation to information about the batteries and lights. The Panel noted that the label was only secured with glue and that it could be removed or tarnished if placed on a surface. The company then focused on the design elements of the product. The company explained that the product was designed to create a contrasting but complimentary design with the Clementine Light Up Snow Globe Gin Liqueur, to encapsulate the spirit of Christmas. The company stated that the design brief focused on a design that was aimed at adults as that reflected the target market and also took into account the Portman Group’s Codes of Practice. The company highlighted that the Panel had considered the celebration of Christmas in a previous case and ruled that the occasion was celebrated by all ages and did not resonate particularly with under-18s in a way that it did not with over-18s.

Which retailer will see the highest number of sales for their snow globe gin liqueurs over Christmas? Only 44 days to go…

Marks & Spencer brought out Spiced Sugar Plum and Clementine gins in light up bottles, the glittering gold reminiscent of a snow globe and beautifully nostalgic. The snow globe bottles bring a hit of childhood nostalgia, as you can shake them up and be reminded of all the fun snow globes used to bring. The lights operate only for a limited time then need switched on again. One can imagine the “Do it again!” cry from children, just as happens with a toy or Christmas decoration with a similar mechanism. The star of the show, however, has to be the snow globe liqueurs, hotly anticipated after selling out last year. Joining the popular Clementine gin liqueur is an appropriately festive Spiced Sugar Plum gin flavour. The supermarket has also added its first rum liqueur to the line, flavoured with Madagascan Vanilla. Come December there’s something about having a glass of wine or gin after work that just gets even more appealing than ever - you’ve got to be prepared for your Christmas do, after all.

Aldi’s gin was very sweet. Maybe too sweet, but enjoyable nonetheless. Mixed with lemonade the gin was very smooth and flavourful, so much so that it was almost too easy to drink. So much so M&S decided to add new liqueurs to the snow globe collection for 2021, including a magnum Blood Orange Light Up Snow Globe Gin Liqueur, which also sings music and a Madagascan Vanilla Rum Liqueur Snow Globe. I believe the light-up bottles of gin and other drinks being sold and prominently displayed by Marks and Spencer are in breach of Portman’s rules regarding appeal to children. If there's one thing that we all love in the run up to Christmas, it's all the festive food and drink on sale. The sweet drink would make for the perfect festive drink, especially for a Christmas party or gift.

Marks and Spencer’s version arrived on the scene a few years ago, with shoppers desperate to get their hands on the stunning bottle - and others going as far as to collect all the different flavours to create a collection.
