It’s been two years since we’ve played live,” singer Suggs declares, reflecting on how the pandemic derailed this British pop institution. “I’ve found myself singing at old grannies at the bus stop.” Still, within seconds, band and audience resume their positions for the traditional festive staple of a Madness December tour. Around a quarter of the crowd are wearing fezzes. The sunglassed, besuited vocalist begins the evening in a stage-left phone box, supposedly phoning his mum, and still has the charmingly befuddled air of someone who woke up from a dream to find himself onstage in an arena. At 60, he changes the “I’m feeling twice as older” line in 1980’s Embarrassment to “three times as older”. He doesn’t need to complete the “Hey you, don’t watch that …” intro to One Step Beyond – the audience do it for him. The first album, we’d been working on all that material for ages and playing it for Christ knows how long. But with Absolutely, we had to hit the ground running. Dave was like, “We need a single! We need it now!” He was quite gung-ho. Absolutely was the second album released by Madness, and came hot on the heels of their debut album, One Step Beyond. Evolving from the ska sound of their debut, Absolutely became an album which showed not only a growing maturity in songwriting, but also showcased the band themselves, who had become excellent musicians in their own right.

a b Marcus, Greil (19 February 1981). "Madness: Absolutely". Rolling Stone. Archived from the original on 12 October 2007 . Retrieved 17 July 2015. Close Escape is basically a rather seedy sex song – it’s written as a direct sequel to In the Middle of the Night from One Step Beyond, and the first lines; “That was a close escape/Had to get a new hobby to relate” directly refer to the end of Middle of the Night, as George, the song’s protagonist moves on, after fleeing his newsagents, from stealing underwear from washing lines to making obscene phone calls. Lee Thompson’s lyrics are perfectly wrapped up by fantastic guitar accompaniment from Chris Foreman. Ominously, the song ends with the heavy clang of a prison cell door, the song becoming suddenly distant. Nyman, Jake (2005). Suomi soi 4: Suuri suomalainen listakirja (in Finnish) (1sted.). When the original vinyl was released the first, more sombre, cover photograph was changed to a more animated pose after around 10,000 albums were pressed. The two sleeves can be distinguished by keyboardist Mike Barson's holding of the umbrella: in the earlier pressing he holds it up to his chin while in the later, and subsequently used, releases the umbrella is on the ground. Filename C:\Documents and Settings\Admin\Desktop\The Best of Madness - The Millennium Collection\03 - Madness - House of Fun.wavFrustratingly for the band, and just like debut album One Step Beyond, Absolutely stalled at number two in the album charts, kept off the top by Zenyatta Mondatta, The Police’s third album. Still waiting for their first number one studio album, it’s an album that deserved to reach the top. Musically, it’s a real tour de force for Mike Barson and Lee Thompson, but that’s not to decry the rest of the band; by this point, all the members had progressed to excellent musicians in their own right. For me, it’s how a second album should be – whilst in many way it’s similar to the first album, there is a real progression for the band. It’s a mature album which manages to retain the band’s sense of fun, and it’s a damn fine listen.
