Joining Clarkin and Catley were drummer Kex Gorin (born Kevin Gorin, 26 January 1949, Birmingham died 21 December 2007) and bassist Bob Doyle. The band line up remained the same until later in 1972, when Les Kitcheridge joined temporarily on rhythm guitar. Bob Doyle left Magnum in 1972 and joined Roy Wood's Wizzard, and was replaced by former Uglys and Balls bassist Dave Morgan (later a member of ELO). [4] Richard Bailey joined on keyboards in June 1973, before going on a two-year sabbatical in South Africa the next year. [5] When James returned to Thunder, Jimmy Copley became a full-time member of Magnum. The band toured in April 2005 to mark the 20th anniversary of On a Storyteller's Night; they released a live DVD of the Astoria concert entitled Livin' the Dream, which also included a short documentary and promotional videos from throughout the band's history.

Engraved upon the dark wooden frame of the bed familiar symbology; through a mirror comes a familiar face looking, not at the past, but at the future with zeal. Making a long-awaited, this year, to the setlist ‘The Flood (Red Cloud’s War)’ is as awakening as ever. Whilst the band will be frustrated by the tour cancellations following the release of ‘The Serpent Rings’ they can at least look forward to another European tour in April 2022 including the UK.

Whilst a good number of those venues have passed into history Magnum, via a hiatus of just over five years, have mercifully endured with half their studio output being released since their 2001 reformation. Come set end a balanced, pragmatic will have been presented. This evening, the Midlanders embark on a pre-Christmas set of four dates; tonight, is a rescheduled date from September’s tour which was, most sensibly, postponed following the passing of Queen Elizabeth. Sandwiched in between this and Saturday’s 50 th anniversary festive show in Wolverhampton are two further dates that have been re-arranged from April when a band member tested positive for Covid. A band of the people indeed. a b c d e f g h i j k Roberts, David (2006). British Hit Singles & Albums (19thed.). London: Guinness World Records Limited. p.344. ISBN 1-904994-10-5. The break since the middle of the Nineties was definitely necessary for me. Since the end of the Seventies, in fact since we embarked on the preparations for our debut recording Kingdom of Madness, not a single month had gone by in which I didn't work for Magnum, composed for the group, or at least thought of them permanently. For almost twenty years, all my thoughts had revolved around the band. I needed a break to clear my head and to be able to devote myself to the band again with renewed energy. Yet again this is a Magnum-album that is a real gem with its big sound and immaculate individual performances plus compositions with a head and a tail. Okay, it is a traditional one and I can imagine that people might react in the sense that there is nothing new here, nothing that we have not heard before by this band. That might be so perhaps but the fact remains that also in 2022 Magnum stands for quality and an established, and above all ‘their own’, sound. That has got to be worth something or not?Tony Clarkin’s songwriting for the band still reigns supreme but whether consciously or not the recurring motif of ‘Remember’ recalls (Don’t Fear) The Reaper. At least it’s not Saxon! Elsewhere, there are similarities with previous (recent) offerings; ‘Remember’ also recalls ‘The Archway Of Tears’ from ‘The Serpent Rings’.
