About this deal

A little yeastier, with sherbet lemon and lots of minerality. There’s a cushion of sweetness that is plush and soft, very easy to frink. Good length again, finishing quite sweet and easy to drink. 88 Around 7 – 8% Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco in the blend. Quite a Champagne-like nose with gentle nettle and herbal notes and a touch of yeawtiness. The palate has a cool, mineral character, with a little salty note. Lovely fruit here; lots of crisp orchard fruits and a long fiinsih with a bit of structure. 89/100 If one considers that Prosecco has increased in production volumes by tenfold in the past 15 years, from around 60 million bottles to more than 600m today, its remarkable how the fizz has reached such a scale while retaining its appealing combination of clean, aromatic peach and pear flavours, with a touch of sweetness, offset by a zesty edge.As for the issue of diversity, there seems to be a broadening of Prosecco styles, with successful results among the differing profiles. In terms of sugar levels, Prosecco does seem to best suit an ‘extra dry’ sweetness (12g-17g/l), with around 13g-15g/l being optimal to fill out the mid-palate without tasting saccharine. However, there appears to be a rising number of Brut and even Extra Brut Proseccos coming on to the market, offering a slightly sharper drinking experience, but, due to the use of fine, ripe fruit, a taste that isn’t too hard. Lovely clean pear nose. Plenty of fresh, brightly focused and sparky fruit with a touch of preserved lemon. A touch of phenolic character, and good balance into a long, distinctiver finish with 33g/l residual sugar givng some sweetness. 90/100 of this IGT wine is not Prosecco, but variousother indigenous grapes and a little Chardonnay. Dominated by the pear fruit on the nose, with a tiny toasty note. Quite sweet on the palate, with a lovely mouth-filling mousse and a long, peachy finish that is clean and clear, but easy to drink. 87/100

What: For easy drinking you can’t beat this light, crisp bottle which makes a refreshing option for pre-dinner drinks. There’s a subtle sweetness, without it becoming sugary and there isn’t too much fizz either to overpower the palate. An added bonus to this popular serve is that it’s also often on offer for 25% off which represents great value for money. What: A consistent high-performer with Laithwaites, Alessio Rossetto's easy-drinking Prosecco is full on sparkle and flavour, with creamy ripe peach, stone fruit and a hint of pear. This is a lovely fun Prosecco that covers all bases and occasions, and the full Spumante bubble makes it great for special occasions.Delicate pear aromas, with apple and small floral notes. In the mouth only gently frizzante, with a razor-edge of acidity and a nice bite of apple and lemon acidity playing against a dry, lovely fruitiness. 88/100 These simpler styles of Prosecco wines indicate that, while the overall level of quality is good, not all Proseccos are created equal, so a level of attention in selection is required. Youthful age guarding the freshness is always relevant for these DOC wines. Most of these wines are produced in an Extra Dry style, with around 12g/l-17g/l residual sugar, which suits the peachy fruit flavour well. These are easy-drinking, crowd-pleasing wines, perfect for a spring day among the daffodils and cherry trees. Distinctively cheesy , peanutty nose. Not terribly attractive. The palate is bone dry, but that toasted cheesy note is still there. Lots of pithy, quite decisive lemony acidity. Not my cup of Prosecco. 79/100 Very pale green. Subtle apple nose. A little waxy note, but all very subtle. On the palate a nice, lively mousse and sour lemon and pear fruit. Good acidity, with a slightly chalky finish that’s a touch metallic. 85/100 Slightly nettley, with not much fruit clarity or precision. THE palate has a fairly bland character and not quite pushing through convincingly. 84

A touch of herbs and vegetal aromatics. The palate has good fruit and a nice brightness and freshness. This has sweetness and is a real crowd-pleaser, and also very good quality. 89 Some chalky minerality, and again a lovely fresh, almost orangy character. Juicy and vital on the palate, this has lovely zip and rapier-like acidity. Pear and lemon dazzle on the finish. 90 Glera grapes at harvest in Masottina’s Contrada Granda vineyard, Ogliano Americans drink a lot of Prosecco, nearly four million caseseach year, withannual growth in the middouble digits. Most of it is simple stuff, colorless and lightly citrusy—butsparkling, at least. Plenty of fine bubbles, in a very pale wine. Very clean, fresh, fruity nose with a touch of banana and fresh, ripe pear. 2-5% Chardonnay in the blend each year. The palate is very crisp: lots of fine fruit salad and lemon character, and racy, lemon sherbet acidity. Fine, and the finish is elegant and crisp, but gentle. 88/100 Champagne method Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco and Pinot Noir. Some yeasty, softly peachy fruit, with a touch of caramel. The fruit on the palate is nicely mature and apricotty, with a big core of lemony, quite waxy character. Quite powerful and decisive. 91/100

This Masottina Prosecco is a DOC Prosecco. The difference is that a DOCG Prosecco has been approved by a tasting panel, and therefore the wine is guaranteed to taste as it should. A wine that strikes a balance betweenripeness and typicity. Its tranquil perlage offers a fresh, mountain-air fragrance, whilethe body exudesagreeable peachiness with agrassyfinish. Itsactive bead delivers a fragrance of flowers and stone fruit, while a snap of wet stone keeps things serious. Good complexity. These notes accompany our in-depth feature on Prosecco. For profiles of all of these estates please see Regional report: Prosecco, icing sugar and lemons. Raboso, 30% Lagrein. Cherry pink colour. Strawberry Mivvi nose, with a touch of pomegranate. The palate has lovely fruit – more dry, pomegranate and raspberry and a pink grapefruit acidity. Lovely summery stuff. 87/100

A honeyed Moscato withlily of the valley, white peach, nectarine, and dried apricots. Sweet but not syrupy despite the high sugar content. Terrific with honeyed desserts.

And while these rosatos had plenty of ripe berry flavours, these weren’t too sweet, ensuring they were pretty, fruity, and refreshing. Fiol and Della Vite proved particularly fine examples, making a pleasing end to the UK’s largest professional tasting of Prosecco. Winery Merlot. Combination of big Slavonian botti and French barrique, from 16-year-old vineyards on limestone and clay. Quite a lot of incense and smoky aromatics, with some rer berry fruits and savoury, briary notes. The palate has a slightly leathery quality. 87/100 Confusingly, Extra Dry Prosecco has more sugar than Brut, making it feel rounder, fleshier, and more floral. Here, gingered petals, spicy herbs, and a glittery mid-palateadd levity. A touch of yeastiness, a clean, underripe apple crunch. The palate has plenty of lemon-rind and dry, pithy lemon and apple acidity. Balanced and savoury. 87
