About this deal

A character that you used to like will probably do something that turns you against them or at least makes you question why you ever liked them. It is rare that a prologue can deliver on the promise of being relevant, but this certainly does it. years before Burn's Sleep (three years after the Fall of the Crippled God) Continents of Korelri and Jacuruku [ ]

This is another remarkable book by Steven Erikson, the scope of the series is unbelievably large and complicated. Bringing all the characters and locations together as well and as accurately as he does is worthy of mention alone. You can add to this humour, religion, bravery, cowardice and love and you have an epic fantasy worthy of the name. Some of the other characters we meet include: Silverfox, Gruntle, Stonny, Korlat, and Itkovian. (Yes, there are a lot more, but give me a break! If you want a full list, read the book!) Leaving Kallor, the three gods join their power to sweep the bone and ash of the slaughtered continent into a new Warren created for that purpose so the now bare land can heal. The effort nearly kills K'rul. For me, with this book I believe I have finally gotten a grasp on what the series is. I wish someone had written it out like this to me earlier, so I could understand. Nevertheless, I will try and fill that role for those like me who come after. With a book this big, where so much happens, yet without revealing spoilers, it is difficult to know where to begin with this Memories of Ice book review. There are two main things I want to cover – although they are by no means everything that I could talk about – which are: characters and lore/history. Rape as Drama: During the siege of Capustan, the mercenary Stonny is raped by one of the Pannion Domin, giving her friend Gruntle the motivation to fight for the defence of the city.

In Capustan, the ruling body is desperately preparing to defend their city as the Pannion Domin are mere weeks away. The Grey Swords, a mercenary company dedicated to the war god Fener, have agreed to help defend the city — but time is short, and there seems to be no hope of relief. Outside the city, Gruntle's group of caravan guards, oblivious to the encroaching threat, accept a job to escort the eccentric pair known as Bauchelain and Korbal Broach to Capustan. Chapter 19: For the record, I was always team Jaghut not Imass but even my heart aches for this whole genocidal undead race so yearning for oblivion. However, most of you, if not all, are extremely excited for the journey, as was I when read this series for the first time.As well as old favourites, we have new characters too. Notably we see more of Caladan Brood, Kallor, and Anomander Rake. I loved that these characters – despite their power – did not command the story. This is a story that belongs to the mortals, and it is much better because of it. That is for me to decide, for I exist to command them. To command them all. My birth proclaimed the Gathering – a demand that every T’lan Imass on this world has heard. And now, those who are able, are coming. They are coming.” Like Deadhouse Gates, Memories of Ice consists of four major storylines proceeding in tandem. In the first, Onearm's Host has to ally with its former enemies to march against the Pannion Domin. This storyline follows the awkwardness of the former bitter enemies working alongside one another. In the second storyline, the entity Silverfox (created during the events of Gardens of the Moon) has summoned the undead T'lan Imass legions to undergo the Second Gathering, which will determine the future of the species and their endless (and increasingly pointless) war against the Jaghut, which has now spanned a quarter of a million years. In a third storyline, Toc the Younger and Onos T'oolan (both from Gardens of the Moon) find themselves on the other side of the continent, where they meet and ally with the Seguleh punitive army (all three of them) and the enigmatic sorceress Lady Envy. In the fourth, we join the Grey Swords as they strive to defend Capustan against utterly overwhelming odds. Numerous subplots - such as the fate of the Mhybe, Silverfox's mother whose lifeforce is inadvertently being consumed by her daughter; the journey of a T'lan Imass emissary with news of a desperate war on the distant continent of Assail; the misadventures of two necromancers and their long-suffering servants; and the story of Gruntle, a caravan guard who suddenly becomes something more - abound.

The Second Collected Tales of Bauchelain & Korbal Broach (Collected Tales of Bauchelain and Korbal Broach: Book 2) Finally stuff is making more and more sense to me. But there is so much that happens in this book that it is really hard to sum it up in a review. The Mhybe—Tattersail, Bellurdan, and Nightchill's host Silverfox's mother—ages rapidly and thinks herself ruined when Silverfox appears not to love her, but Kruppe persuades them to reconcile in the end after Silverfox with Kruppe's help prepares the warren of Tellann—seeded to fertility with Itkovian's memories of the pain of the T’lan Imass who gather to Silverfox’s call—to receive Togg and Fanderay as lords of the Beast Hold. Slave Mooks: The Tenescowri are a particularly horrifying example. The cannon fodder of the Pannion Domin, they aren't permitted any supplies from their superiors, restricting them solely to what they can loot from the enemy. As such, they're lightly armed but driven to the point of madness by near starvation and will charge headlong at the enemy against all odds in the hope of slaking their hunger by any means necessary. Though not very effective by most standards, they have the weight of numbers on their side and their presence on a battlefield is horrifying enough to do a real number on the enemy's morale (and their own morale is virtually unbreakable on account of how they have to literally engage the enemy constantly or die a slow, horrible death). It's telling about how hellish the Pannion Seer's rule is that people actually volunteer for the Tenescowri to escape what the Domin does to its civilian subjects.

Inside the dreamworld, the Mhybe moves towards the cage of bones where she hears a beast's agonized howling. The memories of the T'lan Imass fall to the ground as a storm of ice, and Kruppe helps her to the cage and begs her to touch it. As she touches it, Toc dies and Togg bursts into life. His triumphant howl is met by that of the T'lan Ay. The Mhybe passes out. Togg is joined by Fanderay and they run toward their thrones. Memories are woven tapestries hiding hard walls—tell me, my friends, what hue your favoured thread, and I in turn, will tell the cast of your soul ... Redemption Earns Life: The Pannion Seer is given a second chance after the collapse of his empire by being reunited with his sister and being given a job that allows him to recover from the damage that he both suffered and caused. I’m going to bask in my memories of this book for possibly the rest of my life. Not only this is the best book in the series so far, this has also become one of my favorite books of all time. Memories of Ice is deeply impactful and irreplaceable in content. It’s an epic tale of enormous proportion that could only be delivered by a masterclass fantasy author; Steven Erikson is definitely one such writer. Out of every book I’ve read, there are currently less than ten books on my “Masterpieces” shelf, and Memories of Ice is a welcome addition to that list. I’m completely floored and astounded by the greatness that Erikson has created with this installment. The experience of reading Memories of Ice has been frozen inside my brain, and not even Elsa has the power to let it go.
