About this deal

Immortality: In the Thorn timeline, Michael survives multiple fatal events such as being blown up, shot multiple times and acids.

We talked about the stunt for the movie, and on my way out, I held up the mask and said, “Is there any reason I can’t play this guy?” Who Was Emily Roebling? All About 'The Gilded Age's Look at the Secret History of the Brooklyn Bridge Halloween's opening scene — in which the violent murder of Michael's older sister, Judith, plays out visually from Michael's perspective — made cinematic history. When the movie came out in 1978, it was unheard of to film a profoundly unsettling, graphic murder from a first-person perspective. Its effects were unparalleled, though, as putting the audience in the shoes of a heartless murderer forced them to empathize with him. Yet, as bone-chilling as the scene was, it was the reveal of who committed the murder that left moviegoers gasping. In honor of Halloween, the holiday, and Halloween Kills, the latest installment of the franchise released earlier this year, Esquire spoke with nine of the men who have portrayed Michael Myers over the years. Most of them were stuntmen handed the role by happenstance. Some studied the lives of infamous serial killers for inspiration for the role, while others went in a decidedly different direction, studying the philosophies of Eastern Asia to inhabit the role fully and without judgement. I wasn’t that excited about the role, though. I had been working as an actor and stuntman for several years at that point, long enough to feel jaded about the entertainment industry. I don’t know how many times I’ve been up for parts and told it was gonna happen, only to have it fall through. I don't think anyone could have predicted what Halloween has become. When I saw it, I thought it was a great, scary horror film. Once it was available to watch at home, I discovered not only my friends loved it, but my friends’ parents loved it, as well. That’s when I first realized it was a big deal—and the popularity grew year and after year. When they made the sequel, you just knew it was going to be huge.

I was 21 when I got the role, and it was my first acting gig. I was living in North Hollywood, sleeping on a couch at my buddy’s place and doing the starving actor thing. He was portrayed by James Jude Courtney while wearing the mask and unmasked in the Halloween 2018, Halloween Kills, and Halloween Ends. You know how, in slasher films, the individual doing all of the principal slashing tends to advance relentlessly? How that individual never stops never stopping, becoming an unstoppable juggernaut of jump scares and bloodletting? Well, that’s a behavior learned from the slasher film genre itself, which just keeps reappearing with every horror movie cycle. Guns, knives, high voltage, high places, TNT, hexes, curses, seances: nothing stops a slasher, and for 40-plus years, the masked and coveralled psychotic Michael Myers has been the genre’s franchise player.

I thought it was strange they wanted me to meet with the director for stunt work, and sure enough, it was the new Halloween and they wanted me to interview for the role. Alyssa Farah Griffin Defends Justin Timberlake Following Britney Spears' Explosive Abortion Claims On 'The View': "They Were Both In A Very Toxic Environment" I was ecstatic to get the role. I’m a cinephile, and a huge John Carpenter fan specifically. After growing up with Halloween and The Thing playing on repeat, it’s pretty darn cool to be part of this legacy. In his free time, Shane loves going for runs and playing with his 16-year-old beagle Butterscotch. Butters for short, she has been the greatest love of his and inspires him everyday, both creatively and emtionally. On top of that, he's now a huge collector. He loves Funko Pop, McFarlane Toys, and Neca's huge line of horror figures. In the last two years he has been going to a lot of conversations to buy an unhealthy amount of figures. This has also allowed him to meet some of his favorite filmmakers/actors like Mike Flanagan, Matthew Lillard, John Carpenter, Grace Caroline Curry, Steve Burns and Kathryn Newton.

Having studied Eastern philosophy—bushido, Zen, Taoism, Buddhism—I gravitated to the stillness and emptiness in the character. Michael Myers has no ego, no judgements, no anger. He doesn't perceive good or bad, right or wrong. He just is. Castle was the original Shape, portraying Michael Myers in the first Halloween film, released in 1978.

Stealth Mastery: Michael is shown to be adept at stealth as he was capable of keeping himself hidden without anyone spotting him.

All five of us went in and sat with the director and first assistant director. It came to me and one other guy, and ultimately the decision was based on who the filmmakers wanted to hang out with over the next two months. The other guy had a bit of a spark in his eye. You got the sense he could go off at any second. I'm a pretty chill guy. And I was Donna’s first recommendation. Inhuman Durability: Michael possesses immense durability, making him seemingly impossible to kill, capable of withstanding hits from cars going at high speeds, large explosions, gunshots, acids, and other blows to his body while he is still able to walk it off (generally after a short rest period of around a few seconds to a few minutes). The director told me, “I want you to walk like wood through water.” I thought of being rigid but fluid. You’re a force opposing water, so you have to be rigid enough to stand up against it, but fluid enough to move with it. I kept that in mind playing the character. I started going to the conventions 10 years ago and it’s hard to believe that I’m still talking about this low-budget horror film I did 40 years ago.
