English for Speakers of Other Languages (National 5 and Higher) and Philosophy (National 5 and Higher) will now take place on Friday 24 May. The assignment and practical activity will remain as separate assessments; they will no longer be interlinked. This allows learners to show creativity in the assignment and gives them more opportunity for personalisation and choice in the practical activity.We have removed one of the optional questions from the exam. Learners will answer both mandatory questions on ‘Sleep and Dreams’ and ‘Conformity and Obedience’. They will also answer one optional question from a choice of ‘Depression’, ‘Memory’, ‘Stress’, ‘Prejudice’, ‘Social Relationships’ or ‘Aggression’. The exam will have reduced marks and a shorter time of 2 hours. This modification still allows learners to show the appropriate skills, knowledge and understanding for the course. Our findings from the 2022 exam diet showed that reducing the volume of practical work helped learners to focus their work and refine their submissions. These modifications have had a positive impact on the course while allowing learners to be assessed on the appropriate skills, knowledge and understanding.
