About this deal

While the album still had its darker moments, and Young continued to be willing to indulge in politically oriented songwriting, the overall effect was a record that — in spite of its occasionally monolithic sound — shuffled and swung instead of lumbering. My wife and I are in the process of moving, and we have been working tirelessly to get rid anything that doesn’t serve a useful purpose in our lives. Like many people we have accumulated a ridiculous amount of stuff over the past twenty one years, and we have made a conscious decision to live with less. I must say that the process has been incredibly liberating to say the least. Unfortunately we are both passionate about music, and although we have let much of our collection go over the past few years, Neil Young is just too important for us. I would absolutely love to see your collection of Roman and Greek artifacts, along with that little box of photographs at the top of the stairs. I totally get it. Christgau, Robert (March 5, 1991). "Hard News in a Soft Year". The Village Voice . Retrieved December 22, 2016. According to multiple fan reports, Neil Young and Crazy Horse played their 1990 LP Ragged Glory straight through at a private birthday party for Canada Goose CEO Dani Reiss. The show took place November 4 at The Rivoli in Toronto, which seats a mere 200 people. It somehow escapes my understanding: why does one need to have four additional LPs (as compared to the original releases) to publish four additional songs? Scrounging for quality is alright with me but isn't it a common place nowadays that vinyl production capacities are limited? I still have good vinyl copies of "Freedom" and "Weld", and that April 1st CD will do for many years to come. I think I'll wait for the "Smell the Horse" stand-alone release. Larkin, Colin (2011). The musicianship, already pretty damn fierce on Ragged Glory, has by this point dropped all pretense of mellowness. The guitar solos have become ruthless enough to slice through steel. You get the sense, even without the onslaught of the Gulf War, that the Ragged Glory tour was always destined to be a mighty affair.

Yet even as that precocious latter group supported Young in the studio and on the road as of The Monsanto Years , their rambunctious soul evoked nothing so much as Neil and Crazy Horse at their finest; is it much surprise the latter foursome got together again for some off-the-cuff shows in 2018 (recruiting long-time compadre and early CH member Nils Lofgren in place of Sampedro), then made a record ( Colorado ) the very next year? Abner : Yes, Too Far Gone was played live a lot. Live ‘76 Songs for Judy. Personally, I think the song evolved and improved when he dropped the “double dip” of favorite car, favorite bar. The Freedom version is superior. Christgau, Robert (October 23, 1990). "Consumer Guide". The Village Voice . Retrieved December 18, 2016. The sound at the warm-up Catalyst gig hasn't yet mutated into the (regimented, Gulf War inspired) brutality of the following 50+ shows. But it has started to. You can hear it developing, intensifying - sometimes mid-song.

I am very much looking forward to hearing the Ragged Glory version of Interstate. I've had a couple of listens to Don't Spook The Horse and can't get the riff out of my head now. Farmer John" is a cover of a 1960s song, written and performed by R&B duo Don and Dewey and also performed by British Invasion group The Searchers as well as garage band The Premiers. [7] Young explains the inclusion of the cover: "That was really spontaneous. It just came about while we were practicing one day. Well, we were recording, because practicing and recording are all the same for us. We were rolling the tape and putting things down, but we'd just about finished the album and then we got this take." [8] Young used to play the song as a teenager in his first live performances in a band. He credits these performances with discovering his love for improvisation and playing live. [9] Poncho Sampedro remembers asking Young "Man, why don't we just play some song that you played in your first band when you were starting out? Let's just play something different to be loose.” He then started 'Farmer John.' We played it one time. And it made it on the record. [10] Neil Young's Official Release Series Volume 5 is on the way. Set for release July 14, the 6-CD or 9-LP box set will include Freedom (1989), an expanded edition of Ragged Glory (1990), Weld (1991), and Arc (1991). As with all titles in this series, the albums have been remastered, with Ragged Glory sourced from analog tape. This marks the first time these four LPs have been remastered for vinyl. And you can also hear the seeds being sown that would grow into the Old Princeton Landing series, 5 years or so later.)
