Set of 30 LEDs (one for the head, 29 for the Psycoframe) for PG-15, PG-16, and Unicorn Gundam 03 Phenex. Requires four AA batteries. Even with the huge size of 1/60, I didn’t feel any extension, and the frame was made in multiple layers, so I was quite satisfied with that alone. The ultimate GunPla building experience that encapsulates 40 years of GunPla has arrived! Since the first GunPla released in 1980, new experimental methods of assembly and part molding have been continuously developed leading to this Perfect Grade Unleashed RX-78-2 Gundam, the culmination of the GunPla Evolution Project started in 2015 to set new standards in model kits.

The original Perfect Grade RX-78-2 released in 1998, so as you can imagine, it was a really outdated kit in terms of the build process. Having never built the original kit, I was sold on this updated and reimagined version immediately. Given the amount of internal detailing and varying metallic plated pieces this kit has, I love that you have the option to open all of the hatches on the kit and show off its details.Metallic molding color and plated parts are used for the multi-layer truss frame to create four distinct metallic expressions; three kinds of secondary processing such as silver plating, matte plating and chrome plating are combined with metal parts and newly developed etched seals to make the Gundam look even more amazing than ever before. For those less familiar with Gundam modeling, Bandai primarily produces kits in five main grades. The Perfect Grade is the largest in their main line-up at 1/60 scale and the PG Unleashed is a new offshoot in the line that utilizes a more detailed and layered building process as well as some other nice surprises that I noticed during the build.

Second Perfect Grade kit (after the Perfect Grade Evangelion in 1997) released in Bandai's history. Upon this release, the Perfect Grade line would be exclusive to the Gundam franchise until 2017, when Bandai released the Perfect Grade 1/72 scale Millennium Falcon for the Star Wars model kit series. If using matte/flat-finish top coat, it is advisable not to spray on the clear/translucent and the die-cast parts - can be done by spraying top coat while the said parts are separated. One of the best things about this kit is how Bandai broke most of the runners into sections. On many kits you often see parts for a single section grouped into a specific portion of a runner. The Unleashed runners take that a step further and have sections that break off when complete. Instead of XXX runner, you have XXX 1, XXX2, XXX3. They’re all a part of a single runner at the start, but have individually named sections. Once you use all the parts from a section the guide lets you know you can toss that portion of the runner. As you go through the process of building the kit more and more the runners in front of you slowly dwindle in size. It’s a very small change to the building dynamic that has a noticeable benefit during construction. Not only does it reduce the assortment of runners you need to manage but gives a sense of accomplishment as your work area keeps getting smaller and smaller. On a small note, the Core Fighter has integrated landing gear which can be raised/lowered without adding or taking any parts off. The missiles are also separate pieces molded in a different colour. Very cool as I was not expecting any updates to the Fighter at all. Gundam SEED: Special Edition | Gundam SEED: After-Phase Between the Stars | Gundam SEED Destiny: Special Edition | STARGAZER | SEED Destiny Omake Quarters Drama CD | Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom The new Gundam PG Unleashed RX-78-2 Gundam model kit is designed to replicate the experience of building a real life robot, starting from the internal skeletal frame and moving outward all the way to the external armor. The 6 evolution points include the ease of assembly, articulation, multi-layered structure, different materials for external detail, and new expressive detail via color changing LEDs. The completed model features the largest size insert molded joint structure ever created at over 10 mm (7”) that can articulate immediately after being cut from the runner. Over 90 points of articulation including working pistons, sliding mechanisms are featured, with 40 points being in the chest structure alone to allow for the most poseable model kit ever in this size. Alright, let me get this out of the way. The marketing surrounding this kit is pure bullshit. Take everything you’ve heard about this being the ‘next evolution of Perfect Grade kits’ and toss it out the window. What it really is a nice PG RX-78-2 2.0 release. It’s will built, well designed, and very accessible for folks who haven’t built a Perfect Grade kit yet. Metallic molding colour and plated parts are used for the multi-layer truss frame to create four distinct metallic expressions; three kinds of secondary processing such as silver plating, matte plating and chrome plating are combined with metal parts and newly developed etched seals to make the Gundam look even more amazing than ever before. Finally, an LED beam saber and a color-changing LED is present in the head and chest to display the Gundam in various states of combat or maintenance. A magnet system, the first-ever in GunPla supports the massive shield on to the arm while numerous maintenance hatches all over the RX-78-2 can be opened to showcase the highly detailed internal mechanisms.

They’re a muted gold that might as well be silver like everything else. Also roughly 50% of the silver truss details are silver coated. The rest of just that molded silver plastic that no one likes. For the cost of the kit, and the focus on displaying the inner frame, why not keep it consistent? Looking forward to seeing someone give the frame a full metallic paint job.

Even though I absolutely loved building this kit, it has a few minor faults. I really wish they would have included an action base with the kit. Even though they aren’t expensive to buy seperately, I wish it came with a custom action base to complete that premium look. I will also never understand why the Perfect Grade line doesn’t come with waterslide decals. I opted to buy 3rd party metallic waterslide decals for mine and was really happy with how those turned out, but having a set of normal waterslide decals in the box would have been nice to have, especially for the price tag. I’m not sure why I wasn’t immediately sold on the insert-molded frame, but I had no issues with weak joints, and honestly, I enjoyed the building process more since I didn’t have to build the full inner frame myself. Lighting Lastly, for a kit this expensive, detailed, and loaded with options, why are there no bloody decals? If Bandai is going to promote the Perfect Grade line of kits as being the top model kits in the industry they could come with decals by default. Full stop.
