About this deal

The son went on to change the face of modern art, co-founding the Cubist movement with Georges Braque, passing through both Blue and Rose periods, and exploring primitivism and surrealism. His art was revolutionary and yet he retained the ability to strike a chord with the most unsophisticated viewer. Picasso demonstrated extraordinary artistic talent in his early years, painting in a naturalistic manner through his childhood and adolescence. During the first decade of the 20th century, his style changed as he experimented with different theories, techniques, and ideas. After 1906, the Fauvist work of the slightly older artist Henri Matisse motivated Picasso to explore more radical styles, beginning a fruitful rivalry between the two artists, who subsequently were often paired by critics as the leaders of modern art. Each work of art is unique, but they all serve a specific purpose. When it comes to telling stories, Rembrandt’s paintings are intended to do so. These sculptures, by Michelangelo, are inspired by nature, while Picasso’s paintings are intended to convey feelings.

If you were to make a sculpture of yourself and your pets, or of yourself and a favorite animal, what would it look like? Sign up for the fun stuff with our rundown of must-reads, pop culture and tips for the weekend, every Saturday morningOver the course of almost 70 years, Picasso (25 October 1881-8 April 1973) produced more than 50,000 works, including paintings, drawings, engravings, sculptures, ceramics, and lithographs, in different styles ranging from realism to cubism and even surrealism, impressionism and expressionism. Together with many human figures, these works depict a variety of animals and, to a lesser extent, plants. Art is an important part of our lives despite its flaws. We should be grateful and respectful of this because it is a way to remove the dust of our daily lives from our souls. What Makes Picassos Art So Special? Dog PLD05. Dog was a Dachsund called Lump whom artist Picasso captured in several drawings. Picasso tended to use a light touch and simple lines when depicting animals by themselves and Lump was an obvious choice as a subject because of how the artist loved this animal. The dog featured in several paintings and sketches. La Californie was the significant moment in the artist's life that he built his relationships with both Lump and also Jacqueline. It was in this villa in Cannes that he was to truly feel comfortable and contented.

Picasso was surrounded by art from an early age. His father was a painter who started formally training Picasso when he was just 7 years old - it’s even reported that his first word was “pencil”. Picasso’s rigorous training included learning and copying the Masters and drawing the human body from live models. From his earliest works studying under his father, Picasso showed an amazing drawing ability. Over his lifetime, Picasso explored a huge variety of subjects in his drawings including still life, the human form, animals and mythology. Picasso’s line drawings are arguably his simplest artworks, but they're no less powerful. His simple compositions and continuous line work is experimentation in its purest form, and they remain some of his most popular artworks today. Picasso took complex examples of real life figures, animals and objects and reduced it to a single unbroken line. Whilst they might look simple, capturing the true form of an object or person is a challenge.

Guernica (1937) is Picasso’s most well-known painting, but it is also one of the world’s most famous and moving antiwar statements. Following the brutal 1937 bombing of the Basque city of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War, the film was created. What Was Picasso’s Main Inspiration?

Picasso inquired about whether the dog had ever had its own plate as they ate lunch with his future wife Jacqueline Roque and Duncan. Picasso responded, “I painted a portrait of Lump on my own dinner plate,” after Duncan declined. Since he created his works, animals or plants have been found in nature which, because of their characteristics, have been associated with the name Picasso. They are organisms that, because of their spectacular shape or coloring, resemble or are reminiscent of one of his works. Various plant varieties, especially ornamental plants, such as cyclamen, cana, petunia, calla, calla lily, croton, iris, etc., have been named ‘Picasso’. The lily-iris-Picasso, to mention just one, has an extraordinary mixture of colors: bronzes, purples, yellows, greens, etc. A cross between different varieties of potato has resulted in a potato called “Picasso”, although this is not the case for tomatoes. It is a yellowish potato, but the buds, eyes, have a reddish color, so they have a very Picasso-like appearance. In addition, Picasso had direct knowledge of nature’s animals through the descriptions of the famous naturist, the Comte de Buffon . In the 18th century, this great scientist tried to gather all the existing information about living beings and minerals in his work entitled Histoire Naturelle , which consisted of 44 volumes, some of which were published after his death. In 1936, Picasso’s publisher and art dealer, Ambroise Volland, who knew of Picasso’s passion for animals, suggested that he illustrate a text compiling an anthology of Buffon’s descriptions. To do so, Picasso produced more than 50 illustrations in 1943. This text, known as the Picasso-Buffon Bestiary, was a gift the great painter gave to his then-lover, Dora Maar.

In addition to his graphic works, he pioneered new techniques in ceramics, which resulted in a shift in the course of both forms of art throughout the twentieth century. There is no evidence that Picasso’s work is inferior to the best. What Is Picasso’s Most Famous Painting And Why Is It So Important To Him? Julie Barten, senior paintings conservator at the Guggenheim Museum, told Reuters she had always had “a strong feeling that there was something under there”. We can therefore see how Picasso was able to capture the essence of the shapes and colors of nature and how his work can sometimes be reflected in it. This, among many other aspects, may well be the reason why he is one of the leading artists of the 20th century. In this century, Picasso’s name has even reached the “stars”: an asteroid in the belt between Mars and Jupiter has been named after him. Similarly, a strangely shaped crater with a large arc inside it on the planet Mercury has recently been named after the great Spanish-French painter, now 50 years after his death. Owl PLD01 - Owl sketch is one of the many works produced by Picasso which concerns owls. Owls occur again and again in Picasso's work. This sketch is a line drawing produced by Picasso. It is extraordinarily simple but is, in my opinion, charming in its simplicity. Owls can be found throughout Picasso's career, in all manner of styles and mediums. His Owl ceramics were particularly charming, with the spout of the item being used as the bird's beak. Picasso was a committed sculptor throughout his career, though for a long time this side of his art was not widely known. In 1930, he acquired a house in Boisgeloup, forty miles outside of Paris. Away from the distractions of city life, it became the ideal place for him to pursue his sculpture work with a new energy. The disused stable became a dedicated sculpture studio where he also experimented with printmaking. The simplicity, energy and life captured in Picasso’s line drawings perhaps explains the continued popularity of these images. To express so much is a lot harder than it looks and is testament to Picasso's artistic talent. Pablo Picasso Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Ruiz y PicassoIt truly reflects Picasso's skill that he was able to create these animals in an almost life-like manner using only a few short, simple lines. Line drawings played an important part in paving the way for Picasso's cubist period, by allowing him to practice and develop his ideas before committing himself to canvas. But perhaps what makes Picasso best known is that in many of his works animals appear more or less simplified, or, indeed, dislocated or distorted. On the one hand, we have the “schematic” drawings of pigeons, bulls, and the dog in his Meninas, for example. On the other hand, we have the horses and bulls included in, for example, Guernica. Our great artist also painted or depicted strange and mythological animals, such as the centaurs, fauns and minotaurs, omnipresent in the Vollard suite, for example. Even in some paintings with plants, he included small bulls with wings fluttering like bees around them. Horse PLD06. This is by no means the only work of art that Picasso created that involved a horse. Indeed, he seems to have been fascinated by these animals. Famously, a silently screaming horse features in his epic pacifist art work 'Guernica', for instance, and an early (1906) study entitled 'Boy Leading a Horse' depicts a peaceful scene involving a naked boy and a grey horse towering to his side. Even though each work of art has its intended purpose, it is ultimately a waste of time. The reason for this is that art, as Picasso said, is about us “knowing truths that we were not taught.” It is a way for us to become educated through the arts. The painting is on display at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, as part of an exhibition about the painter’s formative years in Paris.
