Plastic is defined as a material that contains an essential ingredient an organic substance of large molecular weight. It is also defined as polymers of long carbon chains. Today there are more than 50 kinds ofplastic and in the past 100 years its inventionhas changed the world as we know it. Plastic is an almost magic material whichmakes modern life possible – and better.For example, when used for houseinsulation, it keeps people´s homeswarm, while cutting the energy theyneed to heat it. Crude oil is one of the main ingredientsneeded to make plastic. But it’s also afossil resource, which means there’sa limited amount of it on our planet.Happily, for one key component inplastic, called aniline, we discovereda way to create it from biomass(materials such as corn, straw andwood) instead of oil. And that reallyis amazing! Plastics made from fossil fuels are just over a century old. Production and development of thousands of new plastic products accelerated after World War II, so transforming the modern age that life without plastics would be unrecognizable today. Plastics revolutionized medicine with life-saving devices, made space travel possible, lightened cars and jets—saving fuel and pollution—and saved lives with helmets, incubators, and equipment for clean drinking water.

Once at sea, sunlight, wind, and wave action break down plastic waste into small particles, often less than one-fifth of an inch across. These so-called microplastics are spread throughout the water column and have been found in every corner of the globe, from Mount Everest, the highest peak, to the Mariana Trench, the deepest trough. Thermosetting: Plastics that cannot be softened again by heating once they are moulded. Heavily cross-linked polymers come under the category of thermosetting plastics. Example: Bakelite, melamine, etc. Bakelite is used for making electrical switches whereas melamine is used for floor tiles. Recycling of plastic is very important. If they are not recycled at the proper time, then they get mixed with other chemicals or materials and hence become more difficult to recycle and become a source of pollution.
