About this deal

While the Xiaomi Redmi Pad is a good tablet in the sub-300-USD category, the price is still slightly too high for us to recommend it unequivocally. Meanwhile, the in-house competitor Xiaomi Pad 5 comes with significantly better features, while not being substantially more expensive. A port for a keyboard cover is missing, because there is no such thing. And you cannot buy an active stylus either. PUBG Mobile also runs surprisingly smoothly. Really pretty good. But here you can only set the graphics to “balanced”, which is the lowest, and the graphics look weak. But it’s playable. All in all, it’s nothing but negative on the camera front. However, like I said at the outset, that doesn’t really matter all that much on a cheap tablet. Just do everyone a favour and use your smartphone for any snaps. Software

My issue with the Snapdragon 680, at least within this context, is that it struggles to do even the basics smoothly. Whether you’re waking the tablet from sleep, hopping between apps, or simply scrolling through web content, there’s a noticeable lag to everything, with frequent micro-stutters breaking the sense that you’re dealing with a reasonably classy tablet.

Verdict on the Xiaomi Redmi Pad

Xiaomi does everything right with the design. It looks like a typical tablet with a metal case, because that’s what it is. They add their own touch with a large rectangular camera module. It feels premium built, but the transition from display to the body is not as premium as on premium devices. However, it’s not perfect. Especially the graphics performance could be a good bit better. Therefore, I cannot recommend it as a gaming tablet. It’s also less suitable for working or studying, since there is neither an official keyboard cover nor an active pen. Currently, Android 12 is preinstalled and the tablet supports all common Android features. Well, except for one, more on that in a moment. It helps that it comes in three colours, two of which (Lavender Purple and Mint Green) are quite interesting for a cheap tablet. Typically, I was sent the Graphite Gray model, which is much more professional (read: boring) looking.

The Xiaomi Redmi Pad has an 8-MP selfie camera on the longest edge of the tablet. It covers a 105° field of view, captures videos at up to 1080p with 30 frames per second, and comes with the FocusFrame feature, which is supposed to enhance group video calls. This is exactly what the 3D Mark Wild Life test shows. Here, the Redmi Pad SE is also weaker than the first Redmi Pad and it’s even a bit weaker than the aging Samsung Galaxy Tab A8. So, it cannot score with graphics performance. At least with the 3GB RAM version. It’s also not a good choice if you’re looking for a tablet with an active stylus or a good keyboard cover, as neither are available. As for that 5MP front camera, don’t expect it to be good for anything other than basic video calls. Detail is a write-off, focus is rotten, and skin tones are well wide of the mark. It also defaults to an eery beautifying effect, which will smudge those skin tones further.

With a resolution of 1920 x 1200, it’s not as pixel-dense as the Samsung Galaxy Tab A8’s smaller screen, and even less so not the Oppo Pad Air’s 10.36-inch 2000 x 1200 panel. It’s plenty sharp enough for Full HD video streaming and web browsing though, which is what you’ll be doing most of the time. Just like with the Oppo Pad Air, you have to suspect that a cleaner approach to software might have helped with the Redmi Pad SE’s performance struggles. It runs on MIUI 14, which is the latest in a long line of famously flabby (if reasonably functional and customisable) Android UIs from Xiaomi. I think Xiaomi is actually surprisingly good with updates. The first Redmi Pad has already received major version updates and the Pad 5 and 6 are also kept up to date. Since I got the Redmi Pad SE, it has also received a few minor updates. That is great, because that was not the case for many Android tablets for a long time.

Display - IPS Screen with 400 Nits

In real life, the graphics performance is very solid. Games like PUBG Mobile run great when you set the graphics to HD. You cannot select higher settings. Sadly Fortnite is not supported. Other qualities are also solid. Contrast is good, so is color reproduction, it’s fully laminated, and you can watch Netflix in HD resolution. Overall, a good display and a good tablet for Netflix and YouTube, because the sound quality of the four speakers is also good. A direct competitor from Samsung is the 2022 Edition of the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite. The S Pen is included for a similar price and the tablet has 4 GB of RAM as a standard. The graphics performance is a bit weaker in benchmarks, but you will hardly notice a difference in real-world use. In return, you get good software features like Samsung Notes and Samsung DeX. Just like the Oppo Pad Air, the Xiaomi Redmi Pad SE runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 680. Just like that rival, it’s not quite enough to provide a sufficiently fluid experience.
