About this deal

They have to cope with scrapes, slams and damage that would leave any of us looking a little worse for wear. That said, it is similarly priced when you compare like for like, as this lower price point is due partly to the lower level of kit and also in part to the fact that the Kangoo is one of the few vans to come with a petrol engine. Renault Kangoo mpg Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go – not only regulates the distance between you and the van in front but when an automatic transmission is fitted will also bring the van to a complete halt in traffic if needs be

The Kangoo E-Tech is the new name for what used to be called the Kangoo ZE, and it's the electric model in the line-up. This comes with a 118bhp electric motor and direct drive to the front wheels, and there's a healthy 245Nm of torque on offer, too. This electric motor is joined by a 44kWh battery - up from a maximum of 33kWh for the old Kangoo ZE - which gives the van an official WLTP range of 186 miles. Motrio is a brand of automotive spare parts launched by Renault in 1998, covering both Renault/Dacia vehicles and other brands. The objective of Motrio is to propose an alternative range to Renault genuine parts. Motrio became also a multi brand network of repairers in 2003. There are just the two trims in the Renault Kangoo range. The more basic looking Start and the more generously fitted out Advance. Equipment highlights are below. You can opt for the extended warranty cover, but this only takes you up to five years and doesn’t add any more miles to the allowance. This is still some way short of the maximum 10 years’ cover you get from Toyota on the Proace City. Renault Kangoo standard equipment Motrio was created by Renault in 1998, to regain market lost to minor dealers and repair agents. The brand started in France and Italy, but then it extended its operations to Germany (1999), Spain and Portugal (2000).Another positive for reliability is the Kangoo's relatively late arrival to the UK. It went on sale in Europe in 2021, when it won the title of International Van of the Year, but the right-hand-drive version arrived here well over a year later. The reason behind this was that it was cheaper for Renault to homologate the left-hand-drive version and then produce the RHD as a variant of that than it was to go through homologation for both at the same time. The later and cheaper development of the RHD model is also the reason why this version doesn't come with the pillarless access option of the Continental Kangoo. Active blind spot monitoring – not only watches your blindspots but prevents you changing lane into other traffic The rest of the layout is ergonomically sound, too. The high-set gear lever is easily reached and keeps space free lower down, while there are several welcome physical buttons dotted around the central console to control the major functions such as heating and the driving mode. Being able to twirl the former of these is particularly welcome if you are wearing gloves. There is no volume dial, but you can control such things via a dedicated console behind the steering wheel. Storage up front Motorway and Traffic Companion – add-on for automatic transmission Kangoos that combines the adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist to give modest self-driving capability in traffic

There are two diesel engine options, both based around Renault's 1.5-litre four-cylinder. The Blue dCi 95 has 94bhp and 260Nm of torque, while the Blue dCi 115 has 113bhp and 270Nm of torque. As well as more power, the Blue dCi 115 comes with a seven-speed EDC automatic gearbox that replaces the 95's six-speed manual. Fuel economy for the dCi 95 is estimated at 53.3mg, while the dCi 115 manages 50.4mpg. The option of a petrol engine is a rarity in the van sector as a whole. It is a 100hp 1.3-litre engine that is also paired with a six-speed manual gearbox.

The Renault Kangoo’s cabin has gone the way that every small van has of late, by taking big influence from the passenger car world. Granted it is more in line with the sort of budget models that appear on smaller superminis than the high-end larger equivalents. There are three engines in the Kangoo line up as of early 2023, with a choice of two diesels and one petrol. Strictly speaking it is just the one diesel engine, but in a choice of two different power outputs. Both are 1.5-litre engines, with a choice of 95hp and 115hp. The former is offered with a six-speed manual gearbox while, unusually, the latter is only offered with a seven-speed automatic. Choose the long-wheelbase model, and there's a 4.2 cubic metre cargo capacity, which is more than you get in a long-wheelbase Berlingo by nearly half a cubic metre. The length of the cargo area here is 2,230mm, while most other measurements are the same as the standard van's. The rear sill is slightly lower at 613mm, while the maximum cargo height is 1,248mm. Renault is a bit behind the curve when it comes to driver assistance tech in its current range of vans, but the Kangoo is stepping up to redress that, with all of the following available:

The Kangoo is alo 0.3-0.5 cubic metres bigger inside than the Citroen Berlingo, Peugeot Partner and Vauxhall Combo Cargo. Renault’s standard warranties are comparatively poor compared to the rest of the industry, with only three years and 100,000-miles of cover included. Renault hasn’t given full dimensions details for the longer Kangoo Maxi version, but has said it has a loading length of up to 3,548mm.What there isn’t, sadly, is many of the clever features from the left-hand drive version of the Kangoo. That is available with a large glovebox, a system that removes the B-pillar to create a huge side loading space and a hinged bulkhead and a folding front passenger seat that gives you a large and long loadbay. Petrol power comes from Renault's 1.3 TCe 100 turbocharged four-cylinder unit, which has 99bhp, 200Nm of torque and combined fuel economy of 41.5mpg. This features a six-speed manual gearbox and front-wheel drive.

Autonomous emergency braking – detects pedestrians and cyclists in the day or night up to 50mph; detects vehicles (including those approaching a junction) up to 105mph

Of course, the Kangoo also offers an all-electric version, and we deal with this separately in its own review. What are the Renault Kangoo’s rivals? The more powerful engine removes this element of breathlessness but without going too far towards being overpowered. It also greatly benefits from being available with a smooth seven-speed gearbox. It’s unusual that there is no option to spec the more powerful engine with the manual gearbox, but it is not as if there is a huge price differential between the two – no more than you could pay to step up the engine range ordinarily. This group includes the Citroen Berlingo, Fiat Doblo, Peugeot Partner, Toyota Proace City and Vauxhall Combo. All five of these are much of a muchness, but it is the Proace City that stands out over the rest on account of its 10-year warranty to the extent that it is our small van of the year.
