The DJI RS 2 is a mixed bag, on the one hand, the technology blasts the previous generation out of the water. It is beautifully designed, and the attention to detail makes you take note. Connecting and wiring up the new DJI RS 2 does take some time, but for that time you are rewarded with unparalleled performance.While DJI RS 2 might look similar to its predecessor, there are some key design differences that you should be aware of. The two most notable DJI RS 2 upgrades are a 1.4-inch full-color touchscreen and a carbon-fiber construction. Carbon fiber not only decreases the overall device weight, it also allows for heavier payloads, up to 4.5 kg (10 lbs) tested. DJI RS 2 also has a more ergonomic overall look and feel, which rounds a gimbal that is lighter, supports heavier cameras, and is easy than ever to use. As I mentioned previously, the smaller size and lighter weight made it easier to maintain stamina over a long day of shooting 4-6 hours at a time. On paper, the size and weight difference doesn’t seem like much, but over the course of a full day of shooting the reduced payload was definitely noticeable and a welcome update! The new RavenEye Image Transmission System of DJI RS 2 gives operators a simplified way to get remote camera viewing and parameter control. This system transmits 1080p video from up to 200 m away with a latency of just 60 ms, letting users focus on getting the perfect shot without worrying about equipment. If you are working on a professional project with a big camera crew, this new DJI RS 2 feature conveniently provides everyone with a clear view of the action. For the majority of the test, I added the focus servo, which was easy to fit. Just attach the gear band around the lens, then all the rods and attachments you need to fit the focus motor are in the box. The one issue I did find was getting the initial positions of the arms correct. On the old Ronin-S, there was always a bit of a battle to subtly adjust the arms positions; this subtlety is even more difficult with these new carbon arms. DJI RS 2 features an advanced 3D Focus System, upgrading the DJI Ronin-S focus wheel and adding ToF sensors for precise autofocusing even when using manual lenses and/or shooting in low light environments. This intelligent upgrade makes a world of difference, giving you exceptional autofocus in demanding shooting environments. DJI RS 2: Improved Battery Performance Adding a touchscreen was incredibly helpful. It means you don’t have to dive into the mobile app to make some of the changes and can more easily make adjustments in the field. It also shows off the current modes and settings, which can be helpful if you have multiple operators for the same gimbal as there were only LED lights available.While the system is smaller, better designed, and much easier to use, there’s still a lot of excess in cables poking out of the setup, especially if you’ve connected all the accessories. This is by no means a deal breaker, but moving forward, and especially with the advances in wireless technology, it’d be a very welcome addition to see these systems be able to connect without the use of all the USB cables Battery Life Wasn’t as Good as Expected Unlike the Ronin-S where the focus wheel was attached to the side on the RS 2 the focus, the wheel is integrated into the grip and can be operated by your index finger.
