About this deal

So how do you know which tile paint is best for you? Well, this all depends on the job at hand. Our advice is to always use a paint that’s been formulated for a specific job. For example, if you’re thinking about painting your floor tiles – a paint formulated for floor tiles will be better than kitchen wall tiles. Key specs – Colours: 7; Available finish: Gloss; Also suitable for: N/A; Clean tools with: White spirit/brush cleaner Other factors we take into consideration during our tests include the range of colours or tinting available, the paint’s value for money – especially when assessing one-coat products and any additional properties such as mould, moisture or heat resistance. Finally, we look at whether the paint can be used on other surfaces, so leftover product can be used up elsewhere.

Highly concentrated for an exceptional depth of colour, transform hexagon, subway and diamond tiles with an immaculate matt finish. With no primer needed and a fast-drying time, updating your kitchen tiles has never been easier. However, if you choose the wrong paint system, you could end up with a finished product that is bubbly, full of streaks and poor coverage.

Fortunately, we’ve tried, tested and reviewed many tile paints on the market and combined that with our technical knowledge of paint systems to come up with the definitive guide for buying tile paint. Preparation: For best results, ensure surface is thoroughly clean and free from contamination. Use sugar soap equivalent to remove all traces of contamination, rinse surface afterwards with water. Make good any repairs to failing grouting. Around sinks or wet areas it is advisable to apply the Bathroom Tile Paint first then apply silicone sealer over the paint where necessary (eg. between wall tiles and sink top).

We tested it in the grey version – a medium smoky tone that provided excellent coverage after a couple of coats (as it’s a thin primer, one coat was a bit patchy). We liked its speedy drying time – around an hour before another coat – and there was no strong smell, plus we could wash brushes using soap and water. Lighter colours are more prone to showing marks, dirt and dust but to us this isn’t necessarily a bad thing as it will help you keep your kitchen or bathroom clean. Neutral Colours Colour choice for specialist tile paint can be limited, with some ranges only available in neutral shades, or one or two bolder tones. If you have a specific colour in mind, you can always prime tiles with a high-quality, solvent-based primer and use a high-gloss or semi-gloss paint for the top coats. Just be aware that the surface will probably not be as durable as using a specialist tile paint. Coverage: Up to 14m²/ litre per coat. Coverage may vary depending upon method and rate of application and porosity of surface. If you’re familiar with our guides, you’ll know that Rust-Oleum are one of our favourite paints to use and we felt like we should include them in this guide too. Whilst Johnstone’s tile paint is overall better than this one, Rust Oleum have the advantage of offering a high quality paint with scope for lots of customisation.

This particular tile paint is one of the toughest and most durable on the market and is ideal for use in either the bathroom or kitchen. When compared to Dulux’s conventional water-based satin paints, it’s roughly 10x stronger which should give you a good idea as to how strong it is! This particular paint has great adhesion, can be applied thinly and is also resistant to impacts or abrasions. It also comes in a host of different colours (around 30 in total) and so allows you to get the finish you desire. Ronseal are a trusted brand but on this occasion the paint seems very slightly off the mark. If you’re going to go with this paint make sure you have enough for a couple of coats.
