About this deal

Entirely beautiful, bruising and hopeful. Claire Daverley has created a perfect thing. Talking at Night takes its place amongst my all time favourites' CHRIS WHITAKER Hi Claire! Huge congratulations on the very recent publication of Talking at Night ! How did you celebrate the big day, and what plans have you made to meet your readers and promote your novel?

A poignant and emotional will they/won’t they story that cleverly captures both the thrill and trepidation of first love he does not say all that he wants. that she is meant for more. that she should have someone who burns for her; who crawls beneath her own skin.' In this debut novel, we follow Rosie and Will as they deal with whatever life throws at them in the best way they can. The only constant in their life, it seems, it's the fact they never fall out of love with each other. A stunning debut about the complicated nature of love. Like the very best of Sally Rooney with added lashings of heart - I loved it. Claire Daverley has become an automatic must-read for me. A captivating, nuanced and beautiful debut. ISABELLE BROOMI think the only way to truly capture how special this book is, is to tell you all of the things I loved about it. Talking at Night is a love story, certainly, but it’s much more than that. I was rapt. I highly recommend this wonderful novel.”

it hurts to love you but i still love you it's just the way i feel," lana wrote this lyric for will. This goes to show that no failed book is ever a waste of time – I do believe that without those previous projects, I’d never have met my agent in the first place – and they all led me to landing the right agent for me! Ariella is truly the perfect gatekeeper for my writing, the right mix of strategic edge, editorial eye and gut instinct. Plus she truly loved Will and Rosie, and the excitement in her voice over the phone that day told me all I needed to know! I couldn’t have written Talking at Night without all the projects that came before it. Every word and every rejection letter was worth it.Deeply romantic. Reminded me of just how all-consuming first love can be' LAURA BARNETT, No. 1 bestselling author of THE VERSIONS OF US A classic will-they-won't-they in the vein of David Nicholls, this novel is impossible to put down. A story of secret night meetings and calls, sunrises and bonfires, quiet moments and heartbreaking missed opportunities. Impeccable dialogue and wonderful characters that will stay with you for a long time CONSTANZA CASATI, author of CLYTEMNESTRA

Daverley tells a story that is plausible and beautifully written. Rosie and Will are complex and messy, and while romance plays a role, it’s less about “Do they end up together?” and more about “Who do they become?” She doesn’t sugar-coat depictions of mental illness, struggles with identity, addiction, family dysfunction, and trauma. The story feels real but never heavy. As a reader, I could both relate to and sympathize with Rosie and Will, even when they weren’t at their best. Visually-rich storytelling and a strong supporting cast added to my enjoyment - I loved Will’s grandmother and his sister Amber, particularly. They tell it like it is! Eighteen-year-old Mallory Greenleaf is no longer interested in chess, not since her hypercompetitive dad left—the game calls up painful memories. But she grudgingly agrees to play in a charity tournament as a favor to best friend Easton Peña. After she unexpectedly beats current world champion Nolan Sawyer, she’s offered a fellowship that will prepare her to play professionally. Even though Mallory doesn’t want to play anymore, she needs the money that winning would provide; she’s delayed college to support her family, since her mother is chronically ill with rheumatoid arthritis and is unable to work regularly. The more time she spends with Nolan, the more Mallory comes to like and respect him—and the more time she spends playing chess, the more she remembers how much she loved it. But when she learns that Nolan has been keeping a big secret from her, she isn’t sure if she’ll be able to move past it to build a relationship with him. Filled with the author’s signature humor, well-developed characters, and realistic conflicts, plus the fully realized setting of competitive chess, this captivating romance will delight teen readers as well as Hazelwood’s adult fans. Mallory and Nolan are both cued white; there is some racial diversity among the supporting cast. Mallory and Easton are queer.US rights were sold to Pam Dorman at Viking in a pre-empt. The novel has also sold after auctions in Germany (Hanserblau), France (Robert Laffont), Italy (Rizzoli), the Netherlands (De Bezige Bij), with pre-empts accepted in Brazil (Companhia Das Letras), Romania (Bookzone) and Hungary (General Press). It is currently under offer in Spain and Lithuania. Amy Mitchell at United Agents is handling the foreign rights and Yasmin McDonald at United Agents is representing for book to film.
