About this deal

A compilation of rule questions about specific cards and civilizations was originally created by Jay Nabedian. I realize that SM Games mentioned the next expansion will be the last one, but I still wanted to post this here in case they change their mind on that or if one of these could make it into the next expansion. What I had in mind is a modular expansion for Tapestry. Here are some of the different ideas I’ve thought of. Ideas 1 & 2 are probably the best ones here, but you can make up your own mind about the quality of ideas. At every income turn, you can send a historian to another civilization. You have to discard a terrain tile for that (that’s not a big hit honestly). Then, every time that opponent gets a landmark, you get all exposed benefits. What happens if you use a special benefit/ability to play the Technocracy card on top of a “this era” card? The list that follows lists neither a normal or an Automa civ and so the Shadow Empire doesn’t get either.

A natural rubber playmat is available here. It features slots for all cards and landmarks; it measures 770x645mm. It is completely compatible with Tapestry, the current two expansions, and the third expansion to be released in 2023. Some of the capital cities didn’t work out and had to be changed or replaced. The original design included a city that had no impassable terrain but you got to add player markers during income and a city with really difficult terrain but you got a bonus when completing districts.” At least the civilization updates try to maintain the balance between the different civilizations so that’s definitely a good thing! Keep it going! We finally played our first game of Tapestry last night (so much fun, thank you!), and a couple of questions come up. Originally I think we considered having players shuffle the advanced capital city mats into the general pool, but we decided on a different approach because (a) capital cities determine starting position and (b) some players may not want the extra challenge these cities present. Thank you in advance; excited to play this again, and really stoked to get my Collector’s Edition – Red Rising to the table! This is covered in step 2 of the setup procedure: “Choose a color for the Shadow Empire. Give it the following components and nothing else:” We also noticed that the home town gets populated extremely slow and the rewards are minimal compared to e.g. conquering. Even a role like Architect hardly brings any added points. The rewards are minimal.

For balance may be you can gain resources and only resources from this (not upgrade tech and other). Chris had the idea for tech cards that require charmed cards or income 5 cards. But once that was established, we made sure that as many of the cards for this expansion had charms so they would be useful. Chris also wanted tech cards with some powerful square abilities, but they turned out to be way too powerful in the hands of really talented players. So Mike suggested making them single use. Once it’s done, flip the card over and there just is no square benefit to gain any more. But it still counts as a tech card for scoring.” I played many games (including the latest expansion) and I really like the game! The replayability is high, so every game is unique. You also see that some combinations work better with a high player count and others with a low player count. There isn’t much in the way of combat, although you can attempt to topple a territory controlled by another player. Their only potential defense is that a small number of the tapestry cards are “traps,” which can be played in this scenario to cause the conquer to fail and grant you an additional resource. The would-be conqueror still gets most of the benefit of rolling the military dice from their conquer action though, so it’s not overly punitive. Controlling territories is one of many ways to earn points during income. This weekend we played this game for the first time with some experienced board gamers and let’s just say the impression of the game is mixed.TerreDice Games (“The Arts & Architecture expansion did a really good job of introducing new mechanics while leaning on the things that already existed and making them better!”) One core design goal we pursued with the tapestry cards in Arts & Architecture was to give players something else to do with buildings other than place them in their capital city. For at least some of these cards, Mike cleverly conceived of the idea of “continuous” tapestry cards that apply for the rest of the game (opposed to “when played” or “this era”). The game looks beautiful but we felt It has serious imbalance issues, even without the effect of the roles. Finally, we thought that some of the compensation of the roles seemed quite massive, e.g. 10 or 15 VP per opponent for a start? With 4 players that is a massive amount of VP to catch up by the others?

Links and charms: Even before we had started brainstorming for the third expansion, Mike had come up with the idea that he called “links,” which eventually became Tapestry charms as we firmed up the theme. The man that gave us such modern classics as Viticulture and Scythe. With a heritage like this you can imagine the excitement when Jamey announced his latest game, not only the biggest, most expensive offering from his company thus far. But an asymmetrical civilisation building game to boot! Let’s be civilised-Tapestry gameplay We’re going to play a 2-player game again tomorrow without the Empire and using the Futurists and the Craftsmen civs to hopefully give us those good feels we got when we first played this game a few months ago! Regarding the manual, a picture of the tableau with the buildings would help. Now it is quite a puzzle to figure out which is which. Perhaps some color coding or numbering on the bottom side of the foot could help too. When you make a conquer action you roll two conquer dice and can choose, what do you need more – VP or 1 resource (or something else). All the pieces from all the expansions plus the base fit nicely into the base game’s box, without feeling disorganized and without an insert. Here’s my system for placing items into the box…

You discovered warships? Cool, conquer a territory. Yeah, that was the same thing you got when you figured out archery a few centuries ago, what of it? Remember when we floated a raft and explored a new tile? Now we have trains! So yeah, we explore a new tile. And space? The final frontier!? We’ve made it…have 4 points and a house. Mastering herbalism also gave us a house though. But … 4 points! The Chosen seek glory unmatched by other civilizations, whom they look down upon with a mixture of bewilderment and pity. We rarely work directly with third-party accessory creators, but in this case we thought we could best serve Tapestry fans by partnering with Folded Space. That way we could test the insert as it evolved, and we could reveal the various secrets of the third expansion to facilitate in the creation of the insert.Question 1: You gain points for rows and columns in your capital every time you take an action or income that has the symbol of the city. You do not get the points when you place the building. You might get a resource when you place the building, if you complete a district. On a larger note, Covid has taken so many lives and changed our society….the whole world…. from top to bottom in so many fundamental and tragic ways. However, Tapestry comes in a pretty big box, so I polled Tapestry fans a while ago to see if they’d rather us make an organizer box (which would be a quite expensive) or if they would be just as interested in a well-designed, custom insert that fits all Tapestry components (including all three expansions, and including third-party accessories like base snaps) into the original box. The majority chose the custom insert. With the Tapestry core game and 3 expansions, the rules are spread out over many different documents. That can be cumbersome for players, so I asked Chris if he might be willing to create a comprehensive version of the Tapestry rulebook that would cohesively feature all rules, references, FAQs, and cards in one place. Chris did a SUPERB job at this, and our proofreaders made it even better.
