About this deal

Fast forward 20 years to the early 1920’s – the 2 rival sugar refineries eventually merged, and ‘Henry Tate & Sons’ and ‘Abram Lyle & Sons’ became the now globally recognised “Tate & Lyle”brand. This week’s London Shoes publication is about a particular factory that has been churning out its product for over 140 years, and is still very much doing so to this very day – and also has been, and still is, one of the biggest employers in the east London area. children of Class 5 in San Estevan R.C. School, Belize, now have a new and spacious classroom. >> Read More... FAIRTRADE SUGAR HELPS DISABLED CHILDREN PLAY IN SAN ANDRES It makes common sense, and indeed good sustainable business sense, for Tate & Lyle Sugars to support the people who farm sugar cane, the raw material on which we depend. Fairtrade is a system that encourages small scale farmers to become an organised social group, improve their environmental and ethical practices and in return they receive financial support (Fairtrade Premium) for their produce. Through Fairtrade, we've been making a positive contribution to thousands of small scale cane sugar farmers in developing countries, since 2008. Fairtrade truly makes a difference to the lives of farmers, workers and their families by enabling them to them to maintain their livelihoods and reach their potential.

In the early 1970’s the future of Tate & Lyle was very much put in doubt, and there was a threat of closure as a result of ‘quota-restrictions’ imposed by the EU (eg the Common Market as it was then). Meanwhile in 1883, Abram Lyle started a sugar smelting process at a new refinery he had opened down at Plaistow Wharfon the River Thames – just 1.5miles away from Tate’s factory. Under the Fairtrade system, farmers must decide together, democratically, how to spend the Fairtrade Premium and they must demonstrate good financial processes. This sounds a bit dry but in reality it is an incredibly exciting process as farmers vote on how they will improve their livelihoods. See below for some examples of how the Fairtrade Premium paid by Tate & Lyle Sugars has funded some really life changing projects. Our philosophy is based around making a positive difference and doing business with integrity with all our partners, whilst striving to minimize any negative impacts. Those of you with a ‘sweet tooth’ may enjoy this particular London Shoes topic – a topic which is stirring and sometimes a bit lumpy.Abram Lyle’s refinery process focussed on producing a treacle like syrup preserve called ‘Goldie’, that was sold in a distinctive green tin, with a lion on it – and was used for baking cakes or simply as a ‘spread’ on bread etc.

The factories in Silvertown became one of London’s biggest employers who, at its peak, employed over 5,000 people. Since our initial commitment in 2008 Tate & Lyle Sugars has supported many farmers’ organisations to become Fairtrade certified. Today we source Fairtrade sugar from thousands small scale cane farmers in 14 different groups in 4 countries. In 1949 ‘Tate & Lyle’ launched its iconic ‘Mr. Cube’ brand – that introduced boxes of sugar cubes into everyday life.

The ‘Fox@Connaught’ has obviously been designed to cater for the airport ‘traffic’ of travellers, passengers & staff alike. We hope that you will continue to support Fairtrade by buying our products so that between us we can continue to enable our Fairtrade farmers to receive more Fairtrade Premiums and to help to improve more lives and environments in other countries around the world. Fairtrade is helping to make a difference in many people’s lives around the world. Meet some of the faces and communities who are benefiting thanks to your support. Tate & Lyle Sugars is one of the largest payers of Fairtrade premiums globally. We can do this because you support us; when you buy our Fairtrade cane sugar under the Tate & Lyle brand, or by buying other Fairtrade products like chocolate or ice cream with the Fairtrade mark made with Fairtrade cane sugar, you enable us to pay the Fairtrade Premium to the small scale cane farmers that is making such a difference to their lives. The Henley Arms was built in the early 1960’s and is a typical post-war council estate pub. It was shut when I located it, so I didn’t have the chance to have a ‘cheeky’ one in there.

Henry Tate bequeathed a large portion of his wealth to many good causes in the East London area – and he left his large and valuable collection of fine art and paintings, to the nation – and this became the ‘Tate Gallery’ down in Pimlico, which is now known as ‘Tate Britain’. Remove from the heat and then gently stir in the cereal with a metal spoon until completely covered in chocolate. These EU restrictions have continued to have an impact of Tate & Lyle’s production output and workforce numbers, and the business has had to diversify its range of products to be able to compete profitably – a challenge that it has successfully managed so far – and with UK now leaving the EU, and restrictions lifted, it could herald a really positive new phase for the future of Tate & Lyle. The 'Special Olympics' are held every 3 months so disabled children in San Andres, Belize, can play and have fun together. >> Read More... Even though their respective factories were almost next door to each other, Henry Tate and Abram Lyle actually despised each other and never met in person throughout their lifetimes. So – that’s all about the history of ‘Tate & Lyle’ in Silvertown for you– hope you found it interesting – and I guess all that’s left to say is ‘one lump or two-madam’? Pop the chocolate, butter and Lyle's Golden Syrup in a heatproof bowl and set it over a pan of simmering water for about 5 minutes – stirring from time to time until it's melted and smooth (don't let the bowl base touch the water).
