About this deal

Alexandra Bastedo and Godfrey James are first off the plane, followed shortly by Peter McEnery and Stefan Gryff. Andy says the absence of sound reflects the practice of the time, They’re not statues – it’s the actors in the final scene. The statues were in a previous scene and were there to demonstrate that the Bastedo/waiter/poacher were Greek gods. but even allowing for that by all accounts the filming of The Aphrodite Inheritance seems to have been he had been following the CyBC archive and a few days earlier they had uploaded a short video of the cast and crew arriving on Cyprus in late 1978. After Christianity became the dominant religion in the West, the Greek gods could have taken it easy and had a rest. Some suggest they did; others, however, tell a different story.

I admit that the story is a little slow in a couple of places and there are one or two scenes that invoke a slight cringe-worthy wince, which can promote the tendency to get up and put the kettle on or cast your eyes over a newspaper just to hold sleep at bay, but take my word for it, it’s well worth staying with it. While it may not be outstanding, it is highly enjoyable and quite intriguing. Bird’s dominance over the Med drama boom was due in part to his ability to arrange its financing in co-operation with Greek broadcasters. So adept did he become and so capable of providing sure-fire wins that he didn’t even have an idea for his third eagerly-expected series, to be set on Cyprus, before he got on the plane to meet with the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation to discuss the production. Determined to uncover the true facts he is soon tangling with some unsavoury characters, including a wealthy yacht residing American, who all seem to know more than they are revealing. Collier is also convinced Helene has lots of secrets about his brother. Helene meanwhile, along with two “colleagues” Charalambos (Stefan Gryff) and Basileos (Brian Blessed) seems to have some rather special talents.Perhaps in the 70's this kind of silly mystery/drama was appealing on account of it's international nature and the scenery unfamiliar to most people then but today the plot...such as it is...is ridiculous and just silly and the scenery seems Gray and drab. David Collier is called urgently to Cyprus. He is soon involved with the mysterious and beautiful Helene who gives him disturbing news.

In the midst of it all, our hero – the dead man’s brother David (Peter McEnery) – conducted himself with a somnolent naivety that only a charitable suggestion of jet lag could explain. S seen in 2020 I simply CANNOT understand what the appeal is NOW for this absolutely DREADFUL see-through drama. However Cyprus born TV and film director Agis Paikos says "... the girl in question was not an actress at all but a beauty queen, crowned 'Star Cyprus' in 1976. And then there’s Hellman. Even on multiple viewings, he can appear to be a simple, slightly-dodgy American businessman, just trying to get some priceless relics for his own profit. And given he seemingly has nothing to do with the three gods and does nothing especially magical, you could certainly get by with that interpretation. PS I have no idea who the guy in swimming trunks is in the main picture. He doesn’t appear in the TV show. I suspect he may be a member of the production team, probably even the director of the final four episodes, Terence Williams. But I thought you might enjoy a guy in trunks anyway. For the first five minutes, the BBC miniseries The Aphrodite Inheritance looked as though it might please someone else besides the Cyprus Tourist Board.

Morrison waits to conclude his deal – but he is horrified when the ‘buyer’ appears. Inspector Dimas is intrigued by what he learns from Collier; later he gets startling news from Morrison’s girlfriend. It’s Hellman, who came to Cyprus to buy the artifacts, who first realises the true nature of the ‘other buyers’ who have been competing with him for the jewels – he’s the only one who is able to confront them, knowing who they are – prompting him to cut his losses because he knows he’s doomed to failure. Willing to kill even Collier if he submits to avarice and tries to sell their jewels, the gods recover their possessions, close off the tomb and kill everyone who stole from them. the TV series entitled "The legacy of Aphrodite". The team members were welcomed at the airport by the It might be illuminating to see who was doing the criticizing, sometimes people seem to guess wrongly in imagining what others think....This has to be up there as one of my all-time favourite series. It has everything; great scenery, great actors, a beautiful female lead (the late Alexandra Bastedo in surely her most memorable role). Collier spots the three gods together, laughing over a particularly heavenly feast, but when he drags Dimas out to the monastery they were keeping him in, it’s revealed to have been deserted for a year.
