Calling all Geeks!! What an awesome cookbook, who would think that you could get the same food that is in your most favorite geeky shows, such as Star Wars, Harry Potter and even Dr.Who? Well with this cookbook you can. The first chapter is Beverages, non alcoholic. Blue Milk from Star Wars, Red Potion from various video games such as The Legend of Zelda, Minecraft and World of Warcraft. Another beverage is Butter Beer from Harry Potter and of course it would not be complete without a "Blood" recipe from your favorite vampire shows. On to alcoholic recipes to add a bit of spice to your marathon watching geeky shows party. This seems like a great time for cookbooks as we are all probably eating at home more. This entry has a fun twist. The author has created recipes around favorite books. Below are some examples: I am really impressed and mildly amazed at the broad array of food from a very broad array of literary and cultural icons as disparate as Babylon5, Discworld, TMNT, Hunger Games, Zelda, HP, Minecraft and so many more. The recipes themselves are easy to read and understand. They include a header bar along with prep info, yields and a description. Ingredients are listed bullet point in a sidebar. Measurements are given in US standard measures with metric measures in parentheses. Preparation instructions are enumerated step by step. Substitutions and alternative preparation or serving information are given in a footer bar at the end of the recipe.

I like that the author didn't just raplicate recipes from series/video games etc. but (re)invented them. Like the "Fish Fingers and Custard" from Doctor Who that are, here, fish fingers and mustard (but more elaborate and with more interesting flavors, I don't want to describe it to not give it away :)). Plus the author also includes a text that mention the real-life version of the recipe, used bu the producers of Doctor Who (coconut cake and custard), so you have 2 versions to try ! Great Lambas recipe too ! To make the soda "glow" tape the small LED light to the bottom of the bottle, light side facing up into the bottle. There are also three "generic" recipes for blood (vampires), red potions (video games), and mead (misc. geek) that I thought were pretty fun and creative. Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Race Point Publishing for this book in exchange for an honest review. In the introduction, the author tells us how the idea for this book came to be. A great cook should follow their own instincts, according to Cassandra Reeder, make substitutions, add in whatever strikes your geeky soul. I think I will be trying Dragonbreath Chili...just the name sounds fiery. With each recipe the author lets the reader know a bit about where the the recipe was inspired from. Of course with the chili, I will have to tame it down a bit as hubby and I are upward in years and all that spice will certainly hurt our innards. But I sure want to try it. Another recipe that I want to try is 1Up Mushroom Cupcakes from....yup Super Mario Bros my favorite of all time game.

I admit that I am 100% the audience for this book as I am a self-professed geek/nerd person. However! I will say that not only does this book tap into favorite series, films, and books of mine, but it delivers in the recipe department as well! These recipes, and the perfectly-lengthed descriptions for each, were a delight to read through, and I am excited to prepare several. Also, there is some nod to those of us who pursue plant-based living, and that is appreciated. The book includes a cross referenced index which lists individual ingredients (and authors/literary references). The photography and illustration included in the book are -wonderful-, and the nerdy geeky commentary is amazing. The author is a geek, indeed. Everyone still hungry for more, how about a dessert? Some Turkish Delight straight out of Narnia, they are so good you will betray your siblings for them. Or some Pumpkin Pasties that would make any Harry Potter fan overjoyed with happiness? The recipes are quite easy and straight forward for my skill level (which is admittedly quite advanced), but I think that they will be suitable for home cooks of any skill and experience level. The author does a good job of breaking down the recipes and giving you the tools needed for success. Additionally, while not all of the recipes have photos, most do. Photos are always a boon to a cookbook, in my opinion. I want to see what the final product should look like, even if I can suss it out for myself. Bonus! The photos are themed for the particular property from which they are taken (delight is in the details).

GET THE COOKBOOK!

How about starting the dinner with a nice Slurm from Futurama or if you want to get your significant other in special mood an alcoholic beverage like a Romulan Ale.

Let me start out by saying that, as a vegan, what drew me to The Geeky Chef Cookbook wasn't so much the recipes as the intersection of food and pop culture. Two of my favorite things, made exponentially better when mashed up together! Let the pie cool in the fridge for at least 2 hours until set. When it's almost done cooling, prepare the whipped cream: Add the cream and sugar into a mixing bowl and whip with hand mixer until you are able to form peaks. Be careful not to over-whip. Many of the recipes are accompanied by lovely full-colour pictures. However, I really would have liked photos of all the finished dishes. I like the themed photos which often subtly reflect the media they are inspired by. But, some pictures are a little generic and I couldn’t immediately figure out the associated media. Also, this book is so quirky that I wish that the layout had been as fun as the unique recipes. The recipes would have been nicely elevated by a more vibrant design.
