And Roman increasingly thinks that his beloved wife is going out of her mind, still traumatised by what happened to them in their old life. I did not enjoy any of the characters. I actually believe one of my mid-book status update comments was, every character in this book is an asshole. A brilliantly spooky tale of moving house, new beginnings, fresh neighbours and the drip drip feed of stark terror as reality and fear mix in this chilling psychological thriller This book totally hooked me from the start, it's gripping, well-paced, twisty, with a WOW ending (as in wow... didn't see that coming!) There were parts of the book I figured out early on, but this did not take enjoyment away from the overall story.. The characters were both interesting and cryptic including Alan Hall the retired professor, Willow a former model and trophy wife, and Sandy Lana's wise and much older friend and mentor. Lana was a likeable character though there was definitely something off about Roman. The manipulative, powerful and controlling husband and the wife who everybody thinks is crazy, paranoid and not to be believed, really added to the suspense

This book really did have all the makings of a good psychological thriller and left me uncertain of who to trust and what to believe. There are parallels to a certain classic horror/thriller film and while I did guess a couple of the main twists later in the book based on that there were still plenty of things I didn't see coming. The twists in this book are unexpected and absolutely jaw dropping. Tony has you questioning your every assumption, taking a breather because so much is happening and I just needed to read it, I didn't want to stop!

Well, what can I say? This book was truly gripping. It was hard to know who to trust, and in fact poses the question "How well do you really know ANYONE"? Do you really know the inner workings of someone else's mind, real deep down, where dark thoughts may lurk and take shape? I just couldn't predict what was coming next, as the plot took off in various directions, with twist after twist. It was quite simply, brilliant! Evie (Eleanor Tomlinson) and Pete (Alfred Enoch) in The Couple Next Door. (Image credit: Channel 4) The Couple Next Door cast— Eleanor Tomlinson on playing Evie The story was quite slow in parts and was difficult to get into initially. It felt more like cosy country mystery than thriller at times.

While Ash is away on a work trip, he finds he can’t get a hold of Ellie and starts to worry. He comes home and can’t find her or their dog, Poppy. Little does he know that there is more to their house than he knows and definitely more to his neighbors than he could ever imagine. So, at the end of the day, it all boils down to how engaged or entertained I was and I have to say, I thought this was a pretty solid thriller and I enjoyed reading it. And when you learn about the previously happy family who lived - and died - in your house, you start to wonder how safe you really are . . . This book covers a lot of topics including single parent families, Alzheimer’s and domestic violence but it does it in a way that adds to the story and doesn’t focus on it. The characters are really well written and even though not all likable they are believable.

I enjoyed the narrator and thought she pulled off the creepiness in the book. This made my time driving from here to there more enjoyable! I still haven't listened to very many audiobooks. While I prefer to read on my e-reader or read a book, I really do like having the option to listen to an audiobook now and then. It's a nice change and I can close my eyes (as long as I'm not driving). But I don't close my eyes often as usually it doesn't matter how exciting the audiobook is, I could very well fall asleep.

The story of the neighbors 'The Renders' is quite interesting if the story would have been told with more detail as I felt it was only hinted to us what exactly was going on and and what they were to be honest. At some point I kept putting the book down and going 'huh?' In some ways it felt rushed and very vague but not in a good way on their part. While I would love to gorge myself on PT, they tend to work better for me if I space them out of bit. Thankfully, I passed on this one when it was first released, taking a slight break from the genre, so I didn’t burn myself out on it. As you can tell from my attitude concerning the first chapter, I definitely needed that space.

Retailers:

Loved the characters and the setting ( and the local gossips in the Spar Shop ) and the way the book turned into a very tense, and yes at points scary read that had me sat up at certain bits shouting encouragement to the victim (s), dark but enjoyable and have to give a big mention for 3 legged doggy Poppy 😍 Another fabulous five stars for a compelling, well written and suspenseful book that I highly recommend to mystery crime readers young and old!

I am not going to say anymore as I don’t want to give the plot away, but this is a very riveting and powerful story. I loved it. All I can say is read this book… I don’t think you will be disappointed. Photographer Lana, moves with husband and GP Roman, from busy, bustling city life, to the idyllic and relaxing countryside. Becoming tenants of ‘The Gardens’, a residential close where all the houses are large and expensive, and the residents are secretive and mysterious, Lana struggles to settle in. Are the neighbours hiding something sinister, or is she imagining it all? The book had a nice flow to it. The author does a good job at pulling you in and holding your attention. The mystery was revealed in a piece by piece fashion. Once a dramatic turn of events occurred about halfway through, I found myself racing to the end to find out how everything played out. The ending was clever and satisfying as it all made sense.Oh my gosh, I can't tell you how disappointed I am after finishing this. I am a huge fan of Tony Parsons' books and have enjoyed a few of them but this just didn't do it for me in any way, shape or form and for that, I am extremely sad. This is a question for my women friends: When you are stressed, do you start cleaning? If ever fueled with anxiety, do you need to clean something, even if your house is already spotless?
