About this deal

Great Britain’s greatest days on the ice came in the 1930s, crowned by Olympic gold in 1936. Since World War II, though, appearances in the top division have been fleeting. Prior to last season’s survival sensation in Slovakia, the Brits had not appeared in the top division since 1994 and had not won a game at that level since 1962. With patchy records of many of the players of the 30s and 40s – and even the team of 1962 – this list necessarily has a modern bias. However the club’s ultimate aim is to gain a place in the Elite League and once again become a major force amongst the top teams in the UK. Only 18 at the time (1986), he declined the opportunity to play in North America, preferring to return home to Scotland. At the end of the 1989–90 season, after winning the Norwich Union Cup and the Scottish double, Murrayfield reached the Wembley play-off for the fifth time in seven years but lost to Cardiff Devils on penalty shots with Hand missing the deciding shot. He played 45 games, scoring 73 goals and 117 assists. In March 1990, he won a Gold medal and the MVP award during Great Britain's Pool D promotion campaign in Cardiff scoring 5 goals and 8 assists in 4 one-sided games against Australia and Spain. Forgive us if we write some of the figures here again as they are frankly astounding: 1,748 games played, 1,642 goals scored, 2,992 assists, 4,634 points. And this is just in domestic games in the major competitions. We’ve had to omit, for reasons of space, European Cup games, junior GB internationals, Scottish Cups, GB friendlies, and on and on.

Tony Hand said: “I am delighted to be appointed Head Coach of the Warriors. I’ve been friends with David and Paul for years and they have done a great job with the team. My job now will be to build the squad for the challenges ahead. Solway have set the standard in the league and we must strive to reach that level. It will not be easy and will take time but my aim is to get there and build a legacy in Whitley Bay. I will be reaching out to players old and new to outline my vision for the team and get them on board with the journey. In the Spring of this year (2018) it was announced that Tony’s first club, the Murrayfield Racers had reformed. clear of second placed Coventry Blaze, and then went on to complete the double by beating the Coventry Blaze 8-7 in a two legged Playoff Final. In his autobiography, Hand wrote that this was perhaps a mistake and that perhaps he should have re-negotiated the offer. In the foreword, Sather expressed his disappointment that "he didn't accept my deal because he could have advanced in North America. His progress would have been celebrated." Indeed, Sather also says "At the training camp I could see that he had a great ability to read the ice and he was the smartest player there other than Wayne Gretzky. He skated well: his intelligence on the ice stood out. He was a real prospect." started badly for Hand with an eight-game ban for a drug offence when a cold remedy gave a positive result for traces of ephedrine. However, the domestic season got better for him personally as he was awarded a place on the All-Star team and was voted Players' Player of the Year. He was also the League's top scorer with 60 goals and 80 assists in 36 games and captained the Scotland side that beat England 7–6 in the 49th Home International, scoring three of the goals. For the Murrayfield team though, the season was full of controversy and disappointment which ended without qualifying for the play-offs.
