About this deal

Viva! Spanish & Latin American Festival 2023 at HOME Tom Grieve, Cinema Editor Last Updated 19 February 2023 ¡Viva! Spanish & Latin American Festival All films will begin at the advertised time with no adverts or trailers; all films are in Spanish with English subtitles unless otherwise noted; and all age certifications are local to Manchester City Council and subject to confirmation.

We have a trio of fantastic dramas from Chile this year, including the passionately romantic film Los Fuertes, which breaks new ground in Chilean cinema as a charmingly up-beat, same-sex love story. Rachel: “It very much came from a moment of importance in Spanish cinema; there were some interesting films coming out at that time. What’s impressive is that it started as a Spanish festival, now it’s Spanish and Latin American. The festival focuses on Spanish-speaking countries within Latin America, so we have other languages within the festival, like Catalan.” Rachel: “We’ve still got these repercussions of the pandemic so having international film is such a brilliant window to the world that we’ve not been able to explore. It’s a way to learn about history and culture. It’s also a great way to interrogate ourselves about who’s making those films – whose voices don’t we hear? We give opportunities to voice those filmmakers whose work is not necessarily shown, and signpost things to audiences that they might not know about. That worldview is really important I think.” This year we screen 25 new feature films, including multiple UK cinema premieres, along with filmmaker Q&As, film introductions and other opportunities to get involved. Plus plenty of archive cinema treats – two classics from Juan Antonio Bardem, the UK premiere of 1970s hidden gems by fellow Spaniard Cecilia Bartolomé, and a programme of shorts from Latin American feminist film collectives. As always, the festival programme will also include special events, including a preview screening of Mexican auteur Michel Franco's Nuevo orden, which will be introduced by Jason Wood, author of the newly published The Faber Book of Mexican Cinema and HOME’s Creative Director: Film and Culture.Full customer support throughout the subscription to ensure you and your pupils get the most out of the course.

There are also titles from Paraguay, Bolivia, Colombia, the Dominican Republic and Mexico in this, the 27 th edition of the festival. Adelante! units pool and combine language from the module, helping pupils to produce higher level language.
