About this deal

Use scissors or a knife to cut the tape and round off the corners (this reduces the chance of it from catching and peeling up). In most cases, though, using only Tenacious Tape is suitable. Depending on which type of tape you have — e.g., a roll or pre-cut patches— step three will be different:

Here’s the other example. I’d peeled the tape off once, using a reverse of the tape feeding process, trying to get a perfect result for the article. It didn’t quite turn out like that. It does show how the glue extends around the edge, though… The adhesive you use should always be designed for the material at hand, which in this case is PVC. We recommend using PVC cement or PVC glue when it comes to doing patch repair to effectively fix patches to the garment. If there are any traces left, use a sponge and clean without rubbing so as not to remove the water-repellent treatment.

Where to find a suitable fabric for patching

For patches in stressed areas (knees, seat, etc), it may be worth applying a patch on both sides of the fabric, to provide more mechanical strength to the repair. You have two options for clothing and gear repairs – you can do it yourself or you can use a clothing repair service. There are two big players are Scottish Mountain Gear and Lancashire Sports Repairs and both specialise in outdoor clothing but they also do bike gear and have a sliding scale of prices for things like re-proofing, seam re-sealing, hole repairs and even full zip replacements. They are also accredited by W.L. Gore & Associates to work with Gore-Tex fabrics. For the roll: Roll out a piece that will cover the tear with about an inch of space on all sides. Cut the tape from the rest of the roll. Trim the corners with scissors or a knife and round it out into either a circle or an oval. Eliminating corners decreases the chances of the patch catching on something and/or beginning to peel down the road. and then move the iron along the cut, feeding the tape and baking parchment under the iron, guiding the tape into place along the cut.

Now we can fix the patch firmly. Replace the baking parchment over the patch, and use tip of the iron to press down firmly for about twenty seconds, during which time you can run the tip of the iron up and down the length of the patch; imagine pressing the collar of a shirt. Try not to run the iron across the cut, as this can encourage the sides of the cut to open up Your GORE-TEX® repairs and reproofing are carried out by our highly skilled, qualified and experienced team ensuring workmanship of the highest quality. We have genuine GORE-TEX® taping machines, fabrics and Seuter testing systems to ensure all our waterproof clothing repairs are totally waterproof. After your clothing has been repaired it is sealed by one of our WL Gore trained seam sealing specialists. ALL makes repaired When applying a patch repair, it’s important that it goes onto a clean surface as possible. Therefore it’s important to try and clean the affected area as much as possible.

Leave the PVC glue to dry overnight to allow it to set completely. Failure to do this may result in the repair patches slipping or moving out of place. Stormline works with professionals and conducts extensive research to identify the functionalities and features that are absolutely necessary when it comes to rain gear. Cut a second piece of baking parchment as big as the base of the iron. This will stop the iron getting glue on it, and will reduce the risk of damaging the fabric. Line up the patch over the cut. This can be made easier by using a tailor’s pencil to draw a line extending either side of the cut, leaving a clearance of about 3cm either side (we don’t want chalk or wax under the patch). The centre of the patch can then be aligned with the tailor’s pencil line.

Then use the scissors to round the ends of the tape. This reduces the risk of the patch snagging on things, and being torn off. Now turn the garment inside out, and arrange it on the ironing board so that it is ‘relaxed’, with the fabric smooth but not being pulled tight. Again, you might need to support bits of the garment on the ironing board.
