And here we are! Deamonettes attached to the mirror and some mud on the base to match my army. Before someone goes pointing out that I mis-assembled part of the front left coil of the mirror, yes, I’m aware. It just goes to show that you should always take your time with assembly and clean up because you never know what level of effort you’re going to put in. Better to be safe than sorry. In our How to Paint Everything series, we take a look at different armies of the Warhammer universe, examine their history and heraldry, and look at several different methods for painting them. With the recent release of the Indomitus boxed set, we’re looking at the two factions involved and how to approach painting them. Today, we’re looking at the new Necrons. The ‘functional’ metals – so things on the shield, spear, etc. – are based in Balthasar Gold, highlighted with Sycorax Bronze and then washed all over with Agrax Earthshade gloss. If you need to shade the colourshift, be very ginger and only fill the recesses, as they can react unpredictably to washes/shades. The Burning Shore is a tale of the Seraphon in the Old World, following a Bretonnian scoundrel looking to escape his debts by boarding a ship to Lustria, only to find himself swept up in a hunt for forgotten lore.

Call of Chaos by Rob Sanders follows a Slaaneshi warlord through an encounter with the Stormcast Eternals. Bone compliments well with the purple scales of the Saurus and I loved the idea of the head plate being actual bone. Unthinned Skeleton Horde worked great for this. Similar to the Saurus, the shield is done with unthinned Akhelian Green and the trinkets and trim in Retributor Gold .The blowpipe is done with a unthinned Darkoath Flesh , it gives a sort dried bamboo look. Pretty much the entirety of this step is coating the areas you want colourshifted with your paint of choice. When I did the Epitome above I used GreenStuffWorld’s Pinky Blue, but since I can’t condone that company any more I recommend Turbo Dork’s 3D Glasses, or any similar pink/purple/blue gradient.

World Eaters

Wash the majority of the model’s skin with a 1:3 Contrast Aethermatic Blue/Contrast Medium mix, leaving the extremities of the various limbs (arms, legs and tail) untouched. You can vary how far down you go towards the ends to vary up a little. These factions were chosen because they all have a connection to magic, the supernatural, or the unusual, which lends itself well to the unique qualities of the Akhelian Green paint. By using this color in their painting schemes, hobbyists can create models that are both striking and true to the thematic elements of the armies they represent. Akhelian Green Colour Schemes & Combinations These kinda paints work best fired through an airbrush at around 25 psi with 5-6 thin layers, though for the smaller jewellery handbrushing on the layers will work fine. Over larger surfaces like the Epitome they can wind up looking rather streaky done by hand. Once that’s figured out, I based everything that was going to be metallic in Leadbelcher thinned with Lahmian Medium, and everything Canoptek or an energy blade in Caliban Green thinned with water. Previously when working on Canoptek stuff I’ve used Caliban Green Spray (now out of production), and what I found here was that CG paint alone was a little bit more of a vibrant green than I really wanted for the base on the legs. Here I salvaged it by darkening down with a wash of Dark Angels Green contrast, for all later models I used 2:1 Caliban Green/Incubi Darkness, which gave what I wanted straight away. Once both are applied, I then apply a layer of thinned Ironbreaker to the silver as well. That then gets washed with Nuln Oil to darken it down, especially in the recesses, followed by a drybrush with Necron Compound on bits that are going to stay silver to complete it. I do this all now because when drybrushing such a large proportion of the model there’s a risk of getting some on other areas, which I’d rather be able to correct by re-applying the base than having to redo any edge highlighting.

And that’s the finished Necron Warrior! This was pretty fast and easy to do, and I’m very happy with the result. Despite using bright colors, they come across appropriately menacing, which is the goal. The Characters The other major difference between my characters and my rank-and-file jerks is that my character Necrons have orange hyperphase weapons. These took a bit of trial-and-error to figure out before I got a process for doing them that wasn’t particularly hateful. Primed Vallejo Mecha Primer (Sand). This is a shade or two darker than GW’s Wraithbone but has a nice satin finish, perfect for Contrast paints. I hit some smooth sections like the face and hands with pallid wych with a conventional highlight. Then I base coated the gold with retributor, added the stripes with akelian green, and covered the shield scales with gore-grunta fur. I’d been looking forward to getting my hands on the Lumineth models ever since I learnt they were on their way to the Mortal Realms, and they do not disappoint! The sculpts are fantastic. I keep discovering little details, like the heel down position of the Vanari Dawnriders, which really emphasise what a sophisticated and well-trained force they are.

Step 3: I’m doing orange weapons. I do a few thin coats of Trollslayer Orange to start. Dot the eye, do the glowing parts of the gun and the cables. Step 8: The base! I slather it all in Astrogranite texture paint. I also paint the stone by the foot and the scarab with Leadbelcher. Once the models are ready to be painted, the first step is to work out what’s getting a metallic treatment, and which parts of the model are “Canoptek stuff” and get the green stone treatment. Here there are distinct design differences to the last segment of the legs that fit the latter, so that’s where I decided to make the split. My recipe for energy weapons is also a modified version of the same. I’ve done this a few different ways now and I think starting with Wraithbone is probably the right call, and I’m getting to where it doesn’t take hours to do, which helps a lot. As the Old World came to an end, the Seraphon escaped on glittering vessels, drifting in the void for countless eons before making their way to the mortal realms. Over time they have become creates of celestial magic more than flesh and blood, spurred on to fight in the unending war against Chaos, fighting under their Slann lords.
