Lévi believed that the alleged devil worship of the medieval Witches' Sabbath was a perpetuation of ancient pagan rites. A goat with a candle between its horns appears in medieval witchcraft records, [55] and other pieces of lore are cited in Dogme et Rituel: century occultist Eliphas Levi constructed this pentagram. It is commonly interpreted as a symbol of mankind, as many pentagrams are. However, it is a symbol of many things that unite in the existence of mankind, as is evidenced by the variety of additional symbols involved.

Possible Origins of the Figure

Though Eliphas’ depiction of Baphomet does not have any obvious connections to the Baphomet descriptions recorded at the trial of the Knights of the Templar, it is possible that his inspiration for the image came from the grotesque artwork that was known to be present in the Templar’s churches.There is also an interesting connection to the Egyptian deity Banebdjedet because Levi called his image the Goat of Mendes. This is possibly a reason for why the Baphomet of Levi has many differences from the Baphomet of the Knights of the Templar trial. The pentagram is commonly accepted as a symbol of protection and exorcism, driving away evil and other unwanted energies and entities.Later in the 19th century, the name of Baphomet became further associated with the occult.
