About this deal

To choose the right fishing spot for sea fishing for ray species, in this section with the title “Strategy Two: Choosing the Right Fishing Spot”, you need to understand ray habitat and identify the ideal fishing spots. ‘Understanding Ray Habitat’ and ‘Identifying the Ideal Fishing Spots’ are the two sub-sections that are the solutions to this strategy. Understanding Ray Habitat Most manta encounters take place in the area north of Te Hauturu-o-Toi/Little Barrier Island, but their ways are still a mystery, says Lydia Green, who coordinates a database of public manta ray observations. “They hide in plain sight. We’re very much at the tip of the iceberg in terms of any anything close to understanding them.”

The rig is a very simple running ledger rig. This allows for a bait to be presented right on the bottom where the rays are grubbing around. The running ledger is very versatile rig and by using a zip slider, or link swivel, you can easily change the amount of lead used during a fishing session should the tidal flow increase or decrease. Ray will often grab a bait and run before fully engulfing it, so a sliding rig allows the fish to move off with the bait without dragging the lead with it, which may cause the fish to drop the bait.

Van Dijken hands him his speargun, loaded with a satellite tag, and an underwater scooter—a handheld battery-powered motor. Then Van Dijken drives the boat in a wide arc, hoping to position it ahead of the manta without spooking it. Erdmann slides into the water and speeds off. As the cast is made, when the lead weight hits the water, the baited hook falls free of the rig clip, as does the trace in the inverted rig clip. As the rig falls in the water the trace will flow out and sit fully extended on the seabed. Having the long trace well away from the rig allows the bait to wash around on the seabed to tide and wave movement giving a very natural presentation. Lastly, when selecting a location to easily catch rays, bear in mind that human activities in the area, such as construction work, might affect their presence. Consequently, choose a place that isn’t undergoing major changes. The design of The Green Dot Animo Leadership High School mitigates Los Angeles’ two extremes: congestion and sunshine. Built parallel to a major roadway, the long and narrow building acts as a buffer, shielding an open-air courtyard from the noise and pollution of traffic. This orientation gave the building an extensive southern exposure, which the architects cladded in 650 Serengeti E13 solar panels by SunPower. These panels provide 75% of the building’s energy needs and are responsible for a whopping three-million-pound reduction in carbon emissions. The hook set up for both the pulley and the mono paternoster can be a single hook or a two-hook Pennell.

Rays do not have sharp teeth, but they do have immensely powerful crushing jaws. Consider 50lb monofilament as being the minimum for tying your hook lengths, upgrading to 80lb if fishing afloat in strong tides or when targeting blonde ray. Another advantage of the two rod approach is that you can fish two different baits and decipher which bait, on the day, is best. Simple tactics like this can make a major difference to your catch results.Shore anglers may also catch undulates when fishing smaller lugworm or ragworm baits, but these tend to be the smaller fish. They will also take peeler crab or soft crab baits occasionally. Shore fishing techniques Should you mistake this fish for a smoothhound, you may be punished with a deep slice from the sharp spines which sit on both dorsal fins. These spines are the easiest ID method, and you don’t want to tangle with them.

Even the dull-looking painted ray’s tiny spines can draw blood if the fish is handled roughly. Grip either side of the nose with a cloth or around the tail, but not with bare hands. One day at the end of summer in 2021, Erdmann’s team encountered seven heavily pregnant females together. Manta mothers develop a pronounced baby bump, Erdmann explains. “By the time they have a 1.8-metre animal folded up inside of them, you can absolutely see it. At that time, it’s the easiest you’ll ever approach one because they just couldn’t give a damn. Like, ‘Oh, faaaark, when is this going to come out?’” Seeing the expectant mantas together as a group suggested to Erdmann that mothers may actually be giving birth somewhere in our waters. “There’s no way those moms were going to swim all the way to Fiji.” Alternatives include a short length of rubber tubing threaded on the line to hold the sliding hook in place, while a Pennell clip actually allows you to change the hook at any time. Indulge in sensations of bubbling surf, sand between your toes, and perfect sunshine at the beach with Catching Rays™. Tropical orange and golden amber bring the feeling of being warmed all the way through by the summer sun. Relax a moment more and detect lavender, rosemary, and geranium in this multifaceted, true-to-life scent. Catching Rays™ will fill any space with the fond memories of your last beach vacation and anticipation for your next. Your Instant Beach Day The vast majority of rays from the shallow beaches will be caught in the hours of darkness. Few are caught in daylight. Off the deeper water marks, especially those with over 50ft of water, then daylight ray fishing is more likely.Undulates are found from North Africa, inside the western portion of the Mediterranean, and up the European coast as far as Holland. Be mentally prepared by visualising scenarios. This will help you stay calm if something unexpected happens. Don’t use too much force when landing a ray. Circle hooks can reduce hooking injuries. Also, don’t disturb pregnant or egg-laying rays. The ocean is a dark, limpid silver. The tide will turn mid-afternoon. Long ocean swells—the beginnings of distant Cyclone Cody—occasionally lift the boat to a better vantage point. But for most of the day, we see nothing but gannets flying in formation, seabirds, the scattered islands and the mercury sea.

Always study a beach before fishing at low water. Look for the deeper areas and those parallel gutters will certainly hold any rays as they move inshore. Also watch the surf as it breaks. Areas where the surf breaks closer in are deeper and these are the hotspots to try as the tide floods in.

It depends on the type of fish you want to catch. Long rods for bigger fish and short ones for smaller fish. If you have a long flowing trace, for instance a 3-4ft plus trace in a very strong tidal pull like I’m going to fish, then the trace, whether on the bottom or not, will see the bait flap around on the end and result in lift, which can spook a fish as the fixed position of the bait flapping on the spot isn’t a natural look at all!
