Many people, especially those over 25 years of age, cannot hear noises over 15kHz, while others can hear noises all of the way up to 20kHz. So you can have a PC sitting in a room, with a power supply that's making a high pitched squealing noise, and if two people are sitting in the same room; one of them may be able to hear the noise while the other one hears nothing at all.
