About this deal

Gaining access to the M.2 slots requires the removal of four small screws. You slide the fan cover out, and that also disconnects a little USB-A port that powers the fan itself: Something to keep in mind is that there is also an 8GB eMMC device for the OS boot onboard. This is about what we would expect as we can see the three ASMedia ASM2806 devices each with four drives attached. However, there is a significant mismatch between the PCIe lanes offered by the platform, the bandwidth potential of the NVMe storage and that available to distribute services over the network. Putting twelve good NVMe drives in here has the combined bandwidth of 3.6 TB/s, all being accessed through a 10GbE (1.2GB/s) keyhole. There isn’t mitigation for this imbalance, as adding USB network adapters barely moves the bandwidth needle.

But without support for USB 3.2 Gen 2, the fastest transfers to or from external SSDs connected to USB will be around 500MB/s. This processor has a reasonable 2.0-2.9Ghz performance level, 4 Core/4-thread architecture and integrated graphics which (although not as impressive as a dedicated GFX card or integrated GFX of the likes of an Intel Core) are going to be remarkably handy for tasks such as Plex Media Server conversions, handling heavier surveillance feeds in HEVC or even more graphically stretched containers/VMs. This CPU does however present limitations in the sheer breadth of its PCI lanes and scope to how much use you can put it into, but more on that in a bit. At this price point though, this CPU makes a lot of sense, especially when you factor in that the 6 Bay Flashstor is similar/lower in price to most comparable HDD NAS 4-Bays from Synology/QNAP and the 12 Bay Pro version is 10GbE and lower in price than most 8xHDD NAS Systems of Intel Celeron build. Asustor's new all M.2 RAID NAS units are in short, where things should start going as SSD and M.2 drive prices have made them accessible to most of the public. Another key feature of the Quad-Core 2.0GHz Processor is its ability to handle multitasking. This processor has four cores, which means that it can execute multiple tasks simultaneously. This feature makes it possible for users to have several applications running on the device at the same time, without any significant performance dip. Content Management – Numerous Content Management Systems (CMS) and Customer Relationship Managers (CRMs) available in 1st and 3rd party forms, with simultaneous operations supported by this NASIf you flip over the 6-bay unit and pop off the top cover, you reveal a bunch of unpopulated pads for the additional M.2 slots, along with some pads for extra ICs: The ASUSTOR Flashstor 6 FS6706T NAS storage system comes equipped with 4 GB of fast and efficient DDR4-2933 RAM, which provides a significant boost to the device’s performance. DDR4 memory technology is the latest innovation in RAM technology, and it brings several advantages over older generations of memory.

The design of the Asustor FS6712X Flashstor 12 Pro NAS is both unique and slightly unconventional. The rhombus-shaped enclosure, constructed mainly of plastic, sets it apart from traditional NAS devices. While some may find the design to be a matter of personal taste, others may appreciate the visual interest it brings to the table. One peculiar aspect of the design is the location of the power button. It is positioned on the right side of the unit, which can make it challenging to locate from above. This placement is not the most intuitive and may cause initial confusion for users. On a positive note, when the NAS is powered on, the side of the chassis lights up in a vibrant red, adding a cool visual element to the device. Using this approach, four users can get all the available bandwidth over their 2.5GbE LAN ports for both reading and writing data. Even if the NAS only has a single NVMe drive installed, this would work well, and the clients shouldn’t be aware of the demands of each other. Here is the rear view with most of the I/O including the 10Gbase-T NIC. Asustor FS6712X NAS Motherboard Rear Ports I plugged my TrueNAS install USB flash drive into the front of the NAS, and then booted into BIOS by pressing the F2 key repeatedly once the TianoCore splash screen appeared. There is only one thing more disheartening than suffering from noisy ball syndrome, and that is foisting your head splitting ailment on sensitive, imaginative types who are trying to manifest (let’s be generous) original thinking. That, and the blinding irony of an SSD NAS sounding for all the world like a wheezy old dog of an HDD chassis. Oooh, the bells! The decibels! Traditionally I’d fit a drive into a hot swappable caddy, but the move to the wafer thin M.2 drives has required in a rethink from Asustor. Now you need to flip the device over, remove 4 screws and then installed the drives into one of the 6 available spaces before replacing the cover. DropBox, OneDrive and Google Drive Sync – Each ADM Account is Able to Individually Log into one cloud Account, supporting Sync, Directly Upload Files to cloud from the NAS, or from cloud to NAS I'm still trying to convince them to add it to ADM alongside EXT4 and Btrfs support, but until that time, the 2nd best option is to just run another OS on the NAS! This is now permitted, but you won't get technical support from ASUSTOR for other OSes.

On the rear, we get two sets of features. One set is the dual 2.5GbE ports, power, and so forth that are typical of NAS units. The others are HDMI, S/PDIF, and so forth which are found more in desktops. Asustor FS6706T Rear IO Being able to add multiple drives gives you the ability to protect the data stored via a RAID array, which the system helps you configure during the setup, the type will depend on how many drives you’ve got fitted. What is a RAID array? In the coming year, the size of flash modules will increase, and the cost of drives will decrease, making filling the FS6712X less costly and the potential scale of the NAS storage greater. Can’t hot swap drives: Better for speed and silence, but if one fails you need to power down the system to replace it.

About Us

The sole USB 3 port on the front of the box is an interesting choice. The USB is mostly for external storage. During testing, we tried hooking up an external USB 3 2.5GbE NIC to the port, but Asustor’s management software would not give us another interface. Asustor FS6712X NAS Front Make sure your blank USB flash drive (in my case sdb) is formatted and mounted. In my case, when I plugged in my exFAT or NTFS-formatted USB drive, Ubuntu identified it and automatically mounted it to /media/ubuntu/[volume label]. My DS415+, admittedly with Noctua fans, is quiet. The reason for upgrading the fans is to eliminate the metallic grinding sound of ball bearings, to make the fans mostly tolerable. But it isn’t silent with four WD Red 3TB HDD. The escaping chronic fixed level mechanical grinding sound, more than the lively seek chatter, is a depressive ergonomic that is unnatural to the ear and a factor in long term hearing loss. That’s why most sysops tend to not live in the server room, or for that matter the plant room, or indeed the belfry. What? Away then, with those naughty hard disks and their moving parts. Maybe there will be some sort of UI after initialization. Speaking of initialization, I eventually got the following error message during that process: This box needed a processor with more inherent PCIe lanes and multiple 10GbE ports or even 100GbE. And the problem with that latter suggestion is that a 100GbE switch costs ten times what the FS6712X does before you add drives.
