About this deal

The vari-angle hinge also means that the screen can be made clearly visible whether the camera is in portrait or landscape orientation. Panasonic hasn’t made any changes to the screen on the Lumix S5IIX in companion with the S5 or S5II, it has a 3-inch 1,840,000-dot vari-angle touchscreen. The vari-angle joint enables the screen to be flipped out to the side of the camera and angled up or down, or rotated to face forwards for vlogging and presenting to the camera. The LUMIX S5IIx will be available from June 2023 as a body only, as well as S 20-60mm lens kits and S 20-60mm with S 50mm F1.8 Twin lens kits. This won't be available until June 2023 - with only a few key feature differences between them, you can decide if you want to buy the S5II now or wait until the S5IIx. Thanks to host of new and improved features, the LUMIX S5IIX and S5II are able to deliver truly astounding photo and video performance, including high-speed burst shooting at up to 9fps with mechanical shutter and 30fps with electronic shutter (capable of capturing up to 300 images), a 96-megapixel High Resolution Mode (JPEG/RAW) and Dual Native ISO sensitivity, which minimises noise and allows a maximum ISO of 51200 (204800 when Extended).

A new file will be created to continue recording if the file size exceeds the following conditions. Motion pictures with 400Mbps or less: External USB-SSD, SD memory card with Video Speed Class 60 or higher If you’re on the fence about those features and see them more as nice to haves, it may be worth saving your money and putting it towards one of the excellent LUMIX S F1.8 prime lenses. However, I would say it’s better to get a camera you can grow into. Even if it has features you may not feel you need right now, if you can afford it, it could make more sense to get the higher specced model as it will likely serve you in the long term as your filmmaking evolves. This photo was taken using the Cinelike V2 color profile, which gives a desaturated and low contrast look for a dream-like cinematic effect. (Image credit: Peter Wolinski / Tom’s Guide) There’s also a clutch of video-centric display options shutter angle, waveform, vectorscope, and histogram. A range of picture profiles including 14+ stop V-Log/V-Gamut are available on both models, as well as a new REAL TIME LUT function enabling colour grading LUTs to be uploaded to an SD card and directly applied in-camera rather than in post-production. The S5IIX performs impressively for high-speed photography. Using two UHS-II V60 cards, the S5IIX was able to shoot RAW & Fine JPEG in continuous high-speed drive for over 200 shots. That’s nearly 7 seconds of 30fps shooting with the e-shutter, or over 22 seconds at 9fps using mechanical shutter. Even after 200 shots, the buffers weren’t totally filled. I wasn’t able to view my burst photos straight away, but could carry on taking single photos as the camera wrote the image to cards. This is great to see, as it could make the difference between missing or capturing a crucial ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ shot at, for example, a wedding.

Maximum continuous shooting rate: Mechanical shutter: 9fps with S-AF, 7fps with C-AF or manual focus, Electronic shutter: 30fps with S-AF or C-AF With a new imaging engine developed within the L 2 Technology partnership formed by LEICA and LUMIX, and a new 24-megapixel sensor, the LUMIX S5II and S5IIX are the first LUMIX cameras to offer Hybrid Phase Detection Auto-Focus (PDAF). At the heart of the S5 II is a new processing engine that is the first product of Panasonic's L² co-development project with Leica. The two companies shared know-how and resources to develop the new processor, which we'd expect to see in future Leica models, too.

S5IIx-only features:

Like the original S5, the S5IIX is far from small and fiddly. It’s grip is reasonably chunky and it feels comfortable in the hand. It’s also good to know that the camera body frame is made from die-cast magnesium alloy and it’s sealed against dust and moisture ingress. However, it will be interesting to see how the fan vents cope with rain. Thanks to a built-in fan, the S5II and S5IIX offer unlimited recording at 4K/60p and 30 minutes at 6K/30P. I experienced no overheating issues during testing, shooting 6K/30p up to the 30 minute limit and then 4K/60p until the battery ran out. Fan noise wasn’t noticeable either, so shouldn’t cause issues for mics mounted on or nearby the camera. Panasonic Lumix S5IIX review: Battery life Despite the familiar appearance, a lot has been redesigned or reworked. The most significant change is the addition of the fan to the camera's viewfinder hump. This is central to the camera's promises of video endurance, but is designed not to undermine the body's weather sealing. The S5 IIX promises a lot, and it delivers on all of them including the most important of all for a video-oriented camera, unlimited video recording at any resolution. Thanks to the active cooling system, the S5 IIX doesn't overheat even when pumping out 6K video –unlike almost every other mirrorless camera available.

Panasonic's rivals have increasingly added 10-bit capture capability in this class, but the S5 II goes beyond these with a range of support tools and features that aren't as commonplace amongst the competition, so far. As the S5II and S5IIX offer full-sensor recording (or ‘Open Gate’ as Panasonic calls it), the footage can be cropped to a variety of aspect ratios for use on social media without significant loss of image quality. Panasonic Lumix S5II: full-sensor internal 4:2:0 10-bit 6K (3:2) and 5.9K (16:9) footage at 30fps, 4:2:2 C4K and 4K at up to 60fpsTo output motion pictures with 4K or higher, use a Premium High Speed HDMI cable (Type A - Type A plug). As well as offering external recording of full-frame 5.9K (16:9) 5888×3312 12-bit 29.97p, 23.98p or 25p footage, the S5IIX can record to an external device from an APS-C section of its sensor in 4.1K (17:9) 4128×2176 12-bit at 59.94p, 29.97p, 23.98p, 50p or 25p, or in 3.5K (4:3) 3536×2656 12-bit 29.97p, 23.98p, 50p or 25p.
