About this deal

Hope you've had a great Valentine's Week. We have had an odd start to this year, in December Bird Flu hit the UK and as a result we have to live in a pen the humans have built for us. It's quite big and spacious but it's not the same as being able to roam freely round The Garden and I haven't had a chance to wander up The Drive for a while. I also haven't been able to hide my eggs from the humans!! Jan Pienkowski is a celebrated illustrator of children's books. He has won the Greenaway Medal twice - for his illustration of Joan Aiken's The Kingdom Under the Sea and for Haunted House. Jan lives in London. The Story: Meg casts a spell to make eggs for supper. The spell doesn’t go as planned, the eggs are too big and hard to eat. In the middle of the night three dinosaurs hatch. Meg’s spell to save them from being eaten by the Tyrannosaurus causes all three dinosaurs to shrink. I enjoyed reading the Meg and Mog stories as a child and had several in the book box in my first classroom. We recently inherited some of the books and now my daughter is enjoying them, she loves Meg’s spells as they never work quite as they should!

Meg’s Eggs has a very simple, easy to read text which is great for beginner readers. I like the way that speech bubbles move the story along and enhance the simple sentences. The rhyming spells add to the humour and I love the use of onomatopoeia. The illustrations on the double spreads are colourful, bold and humorous and will appeal to toddlers who will enjoy the board book version. My daughter likes copying the simple pictures, she especially likes drawing Owl. Reading Meg’s Eggs has led to discussions about eggs hatching and discovering which animals and birds come out of eggs. It also stimulated a discussion about dinosaurs, what they eat, what their teeth look like and the difference between herbivores and carnivores. We also like the very first Meg and Mog story. We are introduced to Meg, Mog and Owl as well as Meg’s friends. Unfortunately Meg’s spell goes wrong and she manages to turn her friends into mice! She is still very shy and generally keeps herself to herself. She is slightly older than the adolescent girls and came from one of those places where they keep you in a cage all day, I am so pleased I have always been in The Garden.I tried so hard not to stare at her but her crest was so big. Having said that it's not as big as one of the other girls called MeShell, she really does have the biggest crest I have ever seen. We also miss The Humans with the white hair who stayed with us for a while. It was lovely having them here and they gave us double the amount of treats we normally have. I have been getting very friendly with Wilemmina. She was so quiet when she first arrived and I didn't really know her. She was such a scrawny little thing when she arrived. No feathers, beak all out of line and the longest claws I have ever seen.

Well summer has definiately disappeared and there is a chill in the air in The Garden. Thankfully we are all able to snuggle together and keep warm in our Coops. We are loving the warm weather and getting some heat on our wings, we have also managed to create a dust bath underneath one of the coops.
