However, Samsung doesn’t support Dolby Vision, and this puts its TVs at a disadvantage to competing models from Panasonic and Philips, which support both forms of HDR with dynamic metadata. Gaming is also a highlight here. Boasting an excellent input lag of 13.7ms and the new gamma shift tool, along with most of the HDMI 2.1 features of VRR, ALLM and auto game switching, even though the Q70R is an HDMI 2.0b TV, it is certainly a set gamers should really pay attention to. Next up – and of particular interest to PS5 and Xbox Series X owners – the Q70A’s panel has a refresh rate of 120Hz and is capable of delivering 120fps on a 4K signal. If that wasn’t enough, it’s imbued with a new feature called ‘Motion Xcelerator Turbo+’ that enhances motion clarity for incredibly smooth, crisp gameplay, plus it supports FreeSync variable refresh rate (VRR) and promises an impressively low input lag, all combining to deliver a premium next-gen gaming experience for a mid-range price. ALLM (Auto Low-Latency Mode) is also on hand to boot the TV into a low-input Game mode when next-gen consoles are connected. The catch? There’s only one HDMI 2.1 input. We've retested the VRR, input lag, and supported resolutions with an HDMI 2.1 source and firmware version 1403.The four HDMI inputs are all 18Gbps full bandwidth 4K 4:4:4 60p compliant with support for HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG High Dynamic Range signals. We did quite a bit of comparison testing with the Q70R up against the Sony XG95, which is very close on features and price point, as well as some testing against a Philips OLED+903 OLED. We often use Gravity as a test for local dimming, because the star fields and bright white space suits are a real challenge. In general the Q70 handle this difficult material well, with very little haloing, blooming or clipping. However there were a couple of occasions where the local dimming was caught out, although with the less challenging content that was rarely an issue.
