About this deal

The team then built a robot model to investigate the advantages of lizardlike and snakelike body movements in the intermediate lizard species. Known as a robophysical model, the robot functions as a physicist’s model of a living system that can also be used to vary parameters such as limb length and how the lizard’s body drags on the ground. With such capabilities, they can test the predictions of their theoretical model while also gaining understanding of the biological system. For reasons of hygiene and safety, personal grooming products, cosmetics or items of intimate clothing cannot be returned. To construct the robot’s coat of many colors, the researchers made a “skin” using a thin glaze of liquid crystal ink that can take on any color, depending on the alignment of its molecules. When these particles assemble into larger helical structures, they can reflect a specific color of light. The size of the structures dictates the color displayed. A larger repeating arrangement gives reddish tints. Tighter arrangements appear blue. If Customs Duty is payable to your territory, you'll be responsible for paying it to the authorities, so SunFounder isn't involved in this process. Whether Customs Duty is payable, and by how much, depends on a whole lot of different things. For example, many countries have a 'low value threshold' below which they do not charge any Customs Duty.

Overall, the team observed that the degree of body elongation and limb reduction in lizards is directly related to how body and limb movements are coordinated, indicating a closely intertwined continuum between body shapes and locomotion style. The researchers even found the tiny limbs to be of significant use to the lizards, not only with propulsion, but also with lifting their bellies off the ground. By copying the lizard's gait, we are showing these animals are really important sources for bioinspiration," he said. "As a scientific field of study, this is called biomimetics.

The orientation of their feet is not at all aligned with their direction of climbing," said Ms Schultz, who completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Bremen in Germany. Using geometric mechanics, Chong produced diagrams that visualized the body-limb coordination data, replacing complicated calculations with much simpler diagrammatic analysis. They were able to both see and show the advantage of snakelike waves in short-limbed elongate lizard locomotion and predict that the advantage arises as the primary thrust generation shifts from the limbs to the body. To do this, they designed robot lizards of two different ‘species’, Microlophus grayii and Microlophus indefatigabilis. The researchers used these robot lizards to simulate interactions between them and real lizards of the same two species. Therefore, a real lizard could either have an interaction with a robot of the same species, or of a different one. The idea here is, if different species have evolved to pay attention to each other’s signals (and thus avoid mating with a different species), then males that are the same species as the robot should respond much more to the robot’s signals than a lizard of the other species. On the other hand, if the different species arose by genetic drift, then we wouldn’t expect for there to have been as much selection on individuals to avoid mating with the other species.

Mimicking years of evolution to make climbing robots

Scientists have often observed animals using an "announcement" call before beginning their true message. There are often introductory notes in territorial calls in bird species; frog mating calls begin with a low frequency ribbit, and coyotes often bark before they begin their characteristic howling. However, it is the case that the message is not ALWAYS preceded by the announcement. So when do animals use the announcement, and when do they just launch into their speech? It should be noted that it can be very dangerous for animals to use the announcement - whether visual or auditory - because it could also signal predators that lunch is ready. Like a visual dinner bell. (There's a species of bat that is really really sensitive to the mating call of a species of frog. Bad news for the male frogs when they're ready to get it on.)

Robot lizard. Not only could their robot lizards do push-ups, they could display their dewlaps! See videos of robot push-ups and dewlaps.

The next question was how to make sense of the diversity of wave patterns. According to Chong, while there are endless ways to think about the waves and what they mean, the information is so complex that it is nearly impossible for humans to understand without using laborious and time-consuming equations. The researchers’ findings enabled them to conclude that evolution was not just acting to lengthen bodies or shorten limbs, but both — and in a highly coordinated and functional way. One set of animals where it is not clear how the differences between similar species arose is the lava lizard. Lava lizards live throughout the Galapagos archipelago and there are nine species in total. The different species are separated from each other geographically and have both different colouration and different push-up and head-bob behaviour that they use for communication.
